  • Pianist Franz Rupp was an important influence on Marian Anderson her regular accompanist 1940 - 1965 refugee from the nazis who educated her on the German language and particularly Schubert songs.

  • Lovely. She was a magnificent artist. And a great soul.

  • this makes me cry... such beauty...

  • WOW

  • One of the most beautiful voices ever! As a child in the contryside of Norway my family every Monday used to listen to a special radio concert based on wishes from the listeners. Ave Maria sung by Marian Anderson was a favourite. So I have known and loved her since the 1950's. I am now reading her autobiography. It was not easy for her to get the necessary education owing to the racism at that time. Thank God that has changed!

  • What a great voice and with such feeling!!!

  • I don't know what the lyrics of this song say. But to me, the beauty and melody of this song represent a change in American society. A loss of innocence as well as a loss of guilt. On the eve of WWII and the brink of the civil rights movement, what a time to be alive.

  • Here is a prose translation (mine) of the German:

    Ave, Maria! Maiden mild,

    Hear a maiden's prayer,

Upon this crag, barren and wild

If my prayer be wafted up to thee

We shall sleep safely to the morrow

Though men be yet so cruel.

Oh, maiden, see a maiden's cares!

Oh, mother, hear a pleading child!

    Ave, Maria!

  • Ave, Maria! Immaculate!

If we should sink down upon this crag

Into sleep, and thy protection cover us,

Us thinketh [=It shall seem to us -- the German here is archaic] the hard crag will become soft.

Thou smilest; rosy scents are wafted

In this dreary pass among the crags.

    O mother, hear a child's prayer!

    O maiden, a maiden calls!

    Ave, Maria!

  • Ave, Maria! Pure maid,

The demons of the earth and air

Driven forth by thine eye's graciousness,

They can no more tarry here by us.

We will bow ourselves silently to destiny,

    For thy holy consolation is wafted to us;

The maiden would gently bow to thee

The child who for her father prays!

    Ave, Maria!

  • go to the wikipedia article on Ave Maria (Schubert) It will redirect to Ellens dritter Gesang (the real name of this song) and it gives a translation.

  • As is this moment.

  • the most beautiful version i have ever heard and in german which is very difficult

  • why is german difficult?

The song was written in german.

  • Beautiful...definitely a gift from God.

  • Beautiuful. Dorothea

  • I first heard Marian about 8 years ago on an Encyclopedia Britannica CD-Rom. Her story is a good one. She has a great voice.

  • Thankyou from one admirer, and poster, of MA in Scotland UK, to another in the USA.
