A monster player. A great teacher. A genuinely nice guy. I was at GIT when he first got the Moller Synth. It was monophonic. No chords on this rig! The fret board conceals a huge amount of wire and solder. Each fret was wired in 6 places! Saw it listed for sale not to long ago.
Why this guy isn't as famous as Metheny or Martino or Scofield , etc is hard to understand, he's truly one of the great living modern jazz players. He should be on a major jazz label - we need more Don Mock CDs!
Me too! The explanations of substitutions is so logical. He's an amazing teacher and musician. I graduated from GIT back in 1984 and I'm still learning from his books.
Concerning the Synth, I played one (Roland) for a few years. I love it when I have time to sit around and enjoy it, but always had a hard time staying consistent on stage with it. Of course I am no Don Mock. I felt it distracted attention that should have been going towards playing my best.
Don Mock opened my eyes, he is at the top of my list of teachers and players. Although I have have a degree in Classical guitar, the jazz sounds of Benson, Jim Hall etc alluded me. As has been mentioned great players do not always make great teachers. Find a bebop solo by Don, break it down and study how each line works with the chord. When the light turns on, one will see how much sense his playing makes. All based on the western scale, melodic min and the exts and altered chords. Don Rules
Sounds very much like Jan Hammer's stuff with Jeff Beck like Blow by Blow or Wired. Don Mock is a monster and one of a kind: a teacher that can teach AND play!
stuff like this really makes me wonder why guitar synth playing haven't really evolved any much since this time, this is a direct proof that it does have awesome potential. this playing is awesome in itself of course
Saw this performance in person! Was awestruck at his abilities! A great jazz/fusion guitarist and excellent teacher!

Crimeny - his chops are ferocious. Note to self: if anyone says "hey, have a guitar duel with Don Mock" I'd be like "thanks, I'll just play rhythm!"

Get any of his books...just one of his licks or arpeggio patterns can me give TONS of mileage.
