I believe the larger steamer in a doubleheader is also the trailing unit due to it having more power, also the CP #2816 is the locomotive of the host railroad. Always let the host go first. Keith
@Dinosorable Nope, the larger steamer #261 a 4-8-4 Northern is the second unit because the #2816 a 4-6-4 Pacific is smaller and has less pulling power. Also #2816 is owned and operated by the Canadian Pacific so naturally it is going to be first in line.
@Dinosorable Cause of less horsepower. so 2816 leads. for another reason is that 2816 is a 4-6-4 type engine. they hold less horsepower. and another reason is that it would add too much pressure in 2816 and could cause it to overheat and explode thats what happened to oil-fired mikado #3139 she overheated and exploded. 261 is a northern class 4-8-4 locomotive it holds more horse power than a 4-6-4. 4-8-4's have more horse power. get this one. 4-6-4 less power,4-8-4 more power. Result is damage.
As for the custody battle, 261 will be running again. The Friends of the 261 purchased her from the museum earlier this year after the first potential buyer deal fell through. So, Green Bay RR Museum got money they desperately needed, 261 is owned by the Friends now, and she will be running again (as early as sept 2011 I heard, but no promises) All's well that ends well. She's being rebuilt in Minneapolis/St. Paul right now and are always in need of donations. :) k thnks bye
I was on this trip we stoped in Winona Minnisota and let passengers off that wanted to watch the run by and they went on and turned the train than returned to pick us up there was a small cafee in town by the depot and we all pored into it for lunch that was the most people that poor little cafe has seen at one time LOL but they did good and got us fed and we still got to watch plenty of CP trains and the return runby what a great day
@papoocanada Insurance reasons and for electric power for the cars. 261 usually ends up clogging up their intake valves with cinders anyway so they are really just dead weight.
@papoocanada They are there cause it makes a picture shot more awesome. Whats Super Improtant is that if the steam locomotives get a problem they will need to switch spots with the Steam engines. like when a Santa fe GP?? or a SD40? had to pull it due to a problem. i keep on forgetting but it must be a double wammy problem.
Apparently 2816 is in the same boat as 261. She is undergoing a complete overhaul and has been through the entire winter. I was told that 2816 was in pretty rough shape during the BC 150 tour when she went all across British Columbia. The restoration on her was not that great either, a few people on the team were, not exactly experts and a lot of things were not done right.
Is he one of the guys who did the restoration? I never heard of him, so i can't say anything good or bad about him. The one I was talking about is a certain man who has a reputation all across Canada for putting every Steam locomotive he touched in the shops to repair one of his "repairs". I am not going to name names, but most people involved with steam know him, and chase him away on sight.
I heard he is not with the 2816 team anymore I am not sure if that is true but my info came from a former 2816 crewmember that said he is with Amtrak now which I doubt but who knows
thats cool I am already getting an invite to do a run in 2010 from Calgary to Vancouer and back to Calgary in September I am curious to see what the CPR has done to 2818 since I rode it last in 2008 we usually do that excursion every year going over the line on th CPR that the Rockey mountaineer uses than back east we go as far as Golden BC than switch on to the line to the Crows Nest Pass and run that to Lethbridge Alberta than up to Calgary one big circle almost the same line the RCP takes
I just got info that 2816 will be back running in 2010 I got an invite to do a round trip from Calgary to Vancouver and back to Calgary in september I do hope it goes through and runs again
@Dinosorable I forgot one thing. if 261 led it would be to much steam and they would need to go slow. if they went fast there would be so much pressure in the piston clyinder.
@mark10788 Give up already, you have NO idea what you are talking about. My Exploding locomotive is NOT a Dash -8, but an AC4400CW, IT EVEN SAYS IT ON THE LOCOMOTIVE. Give it up, either learn your trains, or get out of the damn hobby.
@ALS2001 Hey dude you are yelling at an 11 year old kid with autism who is not the most skilled at expressing himself. He is a bigger train fan than you can imagine and knows a lot. Maybe not as much as you but who knows? I am sad to see that your response to people who are less "knowledgeable" than you is to berate them. Give the kid a break will ya?
@ALS2001 I WILL NEVER LEAVE MY FAVORITE HOBBY MY DAD HAS MODEL TRAINS I HAVE MODEL TRAINS HO SCALE AND N SCALE! I AM LEARNING MY TRAINS FOR GOODNESS SAKE EITHER GO ZIP YOUR PIEHOLE OR LEAVE ME ALONE AND BE THE JUDGE FOR A VIDEO I WILL LET YOU IN.
@mark10788 Not only does it SAY AC44CW, but the Union Pacific calls it a AC44CW, General Electric calls it an AC44CW, and every UP Roster calls it an AC44CW.
i doublt they needed that P-42 lol, great video.

@kschmidt626 your are exactly right on the bigger engine and power deal on the double headers

@Dinosorable It could stress out 2816 cause of less horsepower for 2816 if 261 led. it can damage the engine (#2816)

@mark10788 How could the 261 leading damage 2816?

A very deep contrast between the extreme beauty and elegance of steam paired with the ugliness of the P42.

It's a shame neither of these two steamers are not running at this time. At least #261 will run again after it's overhaul.

He was the head of the CP steam program. He left and now works for Amtrak out of LA, and he's on the 4449's trip as the 'other' engineer.

hmm very interesting it will be differnt being on 2816 and not seeing him at the throttle

Well, he had a young engineer out of Toronto by the name of JJ Morris, and I believe he's one of the heads of the program.

Dont count your chickens before they hatch. 261 is involved in a bitter custody battle at the moment.

Yes, their "museum mentality" is wanting the engine back on display.
