thanks for sharing this! i always wondered what a lot of the stuff meant... especially "she dances while his father plays guitar", i always wondered if it really meant mr. jones' father.. but it didnt make sense.
amazing how the radio version makes it sound so happy... but you hear this version and realize the true story behind it.
That CD was one of the most expensive cd's I ever bought and I hummed and hawed for a few months before I finally went and threw down the 25 bones for Across A Wire and This Desert Life. Wire blew me away it is just tremendous, there is two different style cd's one concert and one storyteller and the storyteller is worth the price alone. 5 Stars!
First time I heard the story though on here of the song.
if you like counting crows you should check out Randall's Project... I'm not saying it's as great as them but you could get to like them search for it... Randall's Project
This is one of my favorite version of this song. I think he does a really good introduction too. I just posted a vid of myself playing this with a few different instrument tracks and backup vocals. Check it out!
I have the unplugged cd with this song and all the others played during this session. It is amazing how the songs take on a new meaning in an acoustical form. It is beautiful.
Yeah, it's not that he does a terrible job or can't pull it off, but there are other ways to do it. For example, Dave Matthews will change up the vocal to a harmony, like a background singer would sing along to the original harmony. But he keeps the vocal timings the same so that the song is totally recognised.

I love Counting Crows. But Adam hacks his own songs when he improvises. The fans want to see and hear the ORIGINAL song that they are familiar with. Why aren't the musicians (guitarist) making up their own chord progressions to these songs? Cause they'd be unrecognizable. Adam knows that if he sang the song this way on the original album, the song would NOT have been a hit at all, so why not stick to waht he KNOWS is the best?
Because he's not an industry musician. The only reason people want to hear the album version is so they can sing along. Most people aren't musicians so singing along is all they can relate to. Adam said in an interview that he improvises every night based on what mood he's in. He lets his emotion do the singing for him, not his vocal chords and muscle memory. That's what music is. He said that way it's new to him, and it's new to everyone listening. That is musicianship, and my hat's off to him.
again though. it is not that he doesn't have the right, or that it sounds terrible. But musicians, including the pros that back Adam up are all masters of their crafts. The crowd wouldn't appreciate the bass player, drummer and accordian player just going crazy depending on their nightly mood. The crowd wants to hear the song they know. Adam's voice is as much an instrument as the drums or guitar, he should respect the other band members with his best performance.
The live version of Round Here is usually over twice as long as the album version. They all go with the emotions. They all feel it as a unit, and it's all about expression.
This is a ridiculous comment, Vocals arn't like insturments, they already have attributed meaning and thus are allowed to be played with. They are the core of the song and they don't fit into the arrangments like the music. Case in points bands like The Smiths who place the lyrics over the top of the completed musical piece.
How can you say that vocals aren't like an instrument, THE VOICE, not the stinkin words. Either way, I think Adam just tries TOO HARD too mess with his vocals live, as if he is bored with the versions that EVERYONE in the crowd LOVES. A certain amount of improv would be acceptable, and it's not necessarily this version I am talking about, Adam hacks Perfect Blue Buildings up til it no longer sounds like Perfect Blue Buildings! less improv
The other thing to remember when dealing with Mr Jones in particular is that its over played and fans of the band are just as bored of the original version as Adam is. I like the Live at the New Amsterdam versions of Round Here and Mr Jones much better than the studio versions and I think Rain King and Goodnight Elizabeth are a million times better and more emotive when improvised.
Sometimes its good to try out variations of songs. I've heard a lot of different variations which Adam has tried out on this number. This one was OK but some of them were awful. I agree with you on this point. He should leave them alone.
Singing nasal(tone of)voice our without the power of your real voice is something few possess without just sounding like butter.
This man man got a really cool n handsome voice. getting tired of voices of guitar-playing guys just want to get laid or loved buy everybody.(Jason Mraz example)
Yeah, been looking for this for a long time. In the regular version you think it's about these guys hanging out and dreaming of being famous, and in this version you realize that being famous means losing a lot that was dear to you...
You can get this song and most of the Storytellers set on 2 CD Counting Crows: Across A Wire: Live In New York City. The other CD in the packet is from MTV's Live from the 10 Spot and has them playing a bunch of songs electrically. Most of the songs are from August And.... and Recovering the Satellites. Good CD to have if you like the Crows :)
