This video has been on my mind a lot lately. I was recently offered a spot in the Cadets2, and the next step for me after making it was to gain an understanding of the mentality involved with being a Cadet. There's a lot to it, and I don't think i'll learn it all in one day. To me though, that's what makes it all so extraordinary for me: by my season's end, I can come back and say that I know what it means to be a Cadet.
Im pretty sure it was this video that single handedly cause the Cadets to win in 2011! (Not really, it was an awesome show executed very well that got them the gold. But I'm sure this video didn't hurt them!) ;)
Go look up phantom regiment and then come back and say that drum corps turn you into passionless drones that don't care about the music. Look at the mallet instruments, how is that passionless? Thad their job in the pit, to play with passion and in the video the director or whoever states to let that inner feeling out? Your claim is totally stupid and not very well thought out @saladshootavvv
I remember when the Cadets were based in Bergenfield. I saw them marching in the Memorial parade after I just finished marching with my high school band. I thought, "Wow, I thought we did good but they made us look terrible!" It wasn't until the following years in band that I realized they were the Cadets.
To say this isn't art is false because isn't dance art that's what colorgaurd does isn't music art because that's what the band is doing playing music isn't pictures art because that's what the band is doin on the field making shapes or having a battle scene, having a story that goes with their theme. All the hardwork all of us put into this because we love it these people spend all most a whole year not seeing their family just so they can do this show the world the beauty of what they do
Yeah, music should be like the military, that contributes a lot to the art..........This is anti-music. No artistry, just cold precision and acrobatics. This is why my music education suffered in high school. I heard many many screaming lectures about having discipline to keep my elbows up with my mellophone but not one word was EVER mentioned about a composer or even something as basic as phrasing. And that arrangement of New York Counterpoint sounded silly and thin.
@saladshootavvv While I understand the point you're trying to make, this 'cold hard precision' is just another interpretation of the music and how to perform it, just as you were trying to argue for the opposite side. You want it to be more expressive, they don't. Just because you're high school band didn't have good instruction or was in a position where they had to harp on the physical aspect more than the musicality doesn't mean that no ensemble focuses on the music.
@IanDonlin A non-interpretation is not an interpretation. There is no artistic vision trying to be accomplished other than being "perfect". My high school experience may seem like one anecdotal event, but the entire musical culture in American schools is like this. Music becomes this strange competition and the "perfection" of the music is what matters. I see it in music students and teachers alike. This probably is a symptom of the way music gets funded in schools. No awards, no money.
@saladshootavvv There is no such thing as non-interpretation of music. Why should perfection not be attempted? Being perfect is not an "artistic vision", and there is no reason why any musical act should not strive to be perfect. Perfect does not equal cold or passionless. Just because you clearly despise what these people are doing doesn't mean you have to coat that hate with bullshit.
@kklloorrm When a piece is performed on MIDI is it not cold and lifeless? And not just because of the MIDI synths, even orchestral samples are cold and lifeless.
@saladshootavvv Also, what would you know of the entirety of music culture of American schools? What would you know about each individual who ever marched in a high school marching band, or played in a high school jazz ensemble? What you seem to be trying to convey is that there is absolutely no passion in anything a high school music student does. Your high school music experience does seem relevant. Its clearly the reason why you feel so hateful towards marching.
@kklloorrm When you attend marching band competitions in high school (where the entire state and/or region attends), it becomes very clear that people are more concerned about the social bonding, the technicality, and the competition than aesthetics, artistic achievement, and MUSIC. When soldiers march in perfect lines and timing are they creating art? No. That's what this is accomplishing. I also work in the classical music field and know people from all over the country, that's how I know this
@saladshootavvv Marching soldiers are not creating art. A good marching band or corp is. What you see in this video is not simply "making perfect lines". As for high school marching band competitions, some may be more focused on the social aspect, but those competitions are clearly not high level in any way. On the other hand, you have competition like the BOA Grand Nationals, which focus on the artistic and musical side of things. Also, you're last point is not even relative to what my point is
@kklloorrm My last point is relevant since you asked me how I know about the musical climate of the entire country and I justified my claim. I work with performers, composers, and all kinds of musicians from all over the country and it's always the same story when it comes to this marching band culture. Art takes a back seat. Tell me, in 100 years what will people gain from looking back at this? What ascetics have been achieved? What artistic worlds have been created? CONT
@kklloorrm Will they look back and see this as another art movement like impressionism, modernism, serialism, neoclassicism, minimalism, spectralism, etc., or will they just hear this kitschy music and see it as a symptom of a military obsessed culture that values novelties and acrobatics more than depth? I think the second.
@saladshootavvv You really think marching band or drum corps will be viewed in the same way as any of those, or any other "ism"?. You really think marching band is an art movement? You seem to have no idea what any of those you listed are. To look into a sport like this and call it a "symptom of a military obsessed culture" is absolutely ridiculous. If "they" means people in general, you are wrong. People don't think that way. Marching band has been around for 100 years, its not going anywhere.
@kklloorrm "You really think marching band or drum corps will be viewed in the same way as any of those..." No, I don't. That's my point, it's a useless distraction from what's really important, which is the music. It makes very capable players into drones. It's not contributing anything to the art, in fact it's detracting. "Marching band has been around for 100 years, its not going anywhere." Is that an argument to give it some sort of importance? Look up the appeal to tradition fallacy. CONT
@kklloorrm "To look into a sport like this.." And there's the first admittance of truth from you! That's the problem, this is a sport and only a sport. It may superficially resemble art, but it is not, it's a sport. A sport that takes resources and performers away from the true art and has left us with the most musically illiterate population in the history of our American culture, (which is sad because many of these players are quite good). Let me update my initial statement from before. CONT
@saladshootavvv It is a sport, and it is also art. The idea that a sport can't be an art and vise versa is ridiculous. If something resembles art, how could it not be art? Again, there is no single "true" art. You state that Drum Corps as left us with a musically illiterate population. Think about what you're saying. How could any form of music or athletics create an entirely illiterate population? You are edging farther and farther away from your original point.
@kklloorrm It is a symptom of a shallow culture that is obsessed with the military, sports and competition. It is a product of a tasteless and overly pragmatic culture that has never heard of the term art for art's sake. Things like this masquerade as art but leave the audience with only a sterile, thoughtless and overall shallow experience. This reveals nothing deep about the human experience and only reveals what Americans really admire. Commerce, competition "success" and socializing.
@saladshootavvv Please explain how the existence of marching band is a symptom of a military obsessed culture. Things like this do not masquerade as anything. People may masquerade, as you are doing, but this itself isn't and couldn't. Watching this may leave you with a sterile and thoughtless experience, but don't try to state your rantings as fact, because that's obviously not true. This is not meant to reveal anything about the "human experience". Explain what the human experience is.
@saladshootavvv How could Drum Corps possibly take away from the music? Listen to these musicians, do you think they have no passion? You think they are drones? They feel no passion, they have no soul, right? Drones, of course. This is not detracting from art, it is an art. You cannot sum up "art" into one thing. Art does not equal music. Art could be anything. You constantly refer to art as one single entity. My point with "100 years" was in regard to people "looking back".
@saladshootavvv I took another look at your last point. "This reveals nothing deep about the human experience and only reveals what Americans really admire. Commerce, competition "success" and socializing". What you are saying is that Drum Corps alone reveals American admiration for commerce, competition, success, and socializing. Don't make such a ridiculous statement without backing it up. And what exactly is wrong with admiring any one of those things?
@saladshootavvv I would say that the funding is partly an issue, but I went to a county high school, and %100 of our funds were from fund raising and band fees. The school system paid for the Band director's salary and the actual building. We even paid the electric bill for the band room because 'the lights are in use during non-school hours'. Also, the music curriculum in a lot of smaller schools in America, and whole states like Alabama, where I'm from, are horrendous.
@saladshootavvv I think you're missing the point of drum corps. It's not about becoming a mindless drone that plays passionless music, or even marching in straight lines. Marching with a drum and bugle corps is about the experience. It's about pushing yourself to the breaking point every single day. It's about challenging yourself to do what you never thought was possible. It's about having an amazing summer while creating memorable , lifelong friendships. That's why I do it.
@saladshootavvv Okay, so I didn't say it's ALL about the music because it's not... however it is a big part. I find the fact that you're judging a whole activity based solely on one corps and one video very poor. Until you actually go to a drum corps event to experience the passion in the music and the see the joy this activity brings to audience members and performers, any point you claim to make about drum corps is invalid.
@Mrfunkyoyo "so I didn't say it's ALL about the music"...you didn't even mention it. That's very telling. "I find the fact that you're judging a whole activity based solely on one corps and one video very poor" not true, please read my other comments. My opinions are based off of personal experience as well as working with and talking to musicians. "Until you actually go to a drum corps event..." I have, several times. They have nothing to do with music or art. That's my whole point.
You guys are awesome!! I cant wait 2 see you guys in washington state. You guys are staying at my HighSchool( Bonney Lake High School ) And I cant wait to see you guys. Im a brass player my self and just watching DCI makes me want to just improve, improve, improve
i've marched corps before, i took last season and this season off for school, but this video makes me glad i'm coming back next season. I really missed the ass kicking, the memories, making the bus your home for the summer, lining the field at the break of dawn, and the experience that nothing else can fulfill. This video gave me so much hype I might even audition for cadets :D
I loved this film too. It makes me glad that I was in drum corps and reminds me of all the things that drum corps has done for me and I think it speaks for many people who was in drum corps.
a FIRST CLASS music performance education; Learning how to be independant, yet work as a team for a common goal; growing as a person; and it's just FUN!
I'd march Cadets....except for the horror stories I hear about the corps. If rumors are true, they get their asses kicked harder than any other corps.
Wow I am in my high school marching band and I hope that one day I will be a cadet, and my band director is a former Cadet and these guys and girls look just amazing
I am sooo proud of each and every one of you that marched in 2010......I tell people all of the time you are 'My Cadets' and I truly mean that. If on tour you ever see a geeky looking guy in Cadets garb from head to tow standing in total owe of you and what you do, that is me. Thank you! For Holy Name shall always be!!!!
The Cadets give me chills! From the first time I saw them in 2000, through my son's year of marching and every time since then I've been in awe of them. Hop instills life lessons. Best opportunity for any young musician.
Great Video! My daughter was in the 2010 Cadets. I see her face several times in this video and I relive what I know she experienced. It is an incredible thing- a wonderful journey- a life changing opportunity. I am so Proud of her and of all the CADETS. For Holy Name Shall Always Be.
@mdsopr True that. I have not marched DCI yet but I did in high school and too be part of the best group in the state and one of many best in the Nation it was the best four years of my life and I wised it would of never gone away
Honestly, who the fuck would dislike this video?!?! I'm not a fan of the Cadets, but this video pretty much shows what all of us that march in the activity feel.
I'm having a particularly challenging day today - but this video brings me back to the very same feelings that they are describing in the video. I marched a different drum corps, but the feelings and "spirit", as it were, are all mutual. Thanks for the pick-me-up - and whether you yell, "Splooie" or sing "For Holy Name Shall Always Be" - long live drum and bugle corps.
@nichampagne It's called "at a mosey". We are in step when in a pair with another Cadet, coming on/off the field, or when there is a tap. Otherwise, it's alright.
Cadets are the only corps that truly terrifies me. They're terrifyingly awesome! Simply because of their crisp visual program, insane drill, and, most of all, starting with the RIGHT foot.
@jakefortin Once you watch the 2011 show, you will be. Trust me. I heavily despised the 2010 show, but The Cadets pulled out the without a doubt, the best show of this season. On par with PR and better (in my opinion than BD, SCV, and CC, and the Cavaliers.
This video has been on my mind a lot lately. I'd march Cadets....except for the horror stories I hear about the corps. If rumors are true, they get their asses kicked harder than any other corps.

This was amazing. Video production was excellent! This is a perfect example of what drum corps documentaries and recruitment videos should be.

Nasty audio glitch at 7:24, probably a YouTube encoding issue. Otherwise, a stunning film. Nicely done.

this is called cadet experience but it kinda speaks for all corps..i just dont like they start on their right instead of left foot its soo weird
IIIIAnthonyIIII 1 year ago
@IIIIAnthonyIIII Honestly it feels more natural than stepping off on the left once you get used to it.

Excellent video. That is exactly what it is like. One of the proudest times of my life is marching with the Cadets. Thanks for that video.

Great Video! My daughter was in the 2010 Cadets. I see her face several times in this video and I relive what I know she experienced. It is an incredible thing- a wonderful journey- a life changing opportunity. I am so Proud of her and of all the CADETS. For Holy Name Shall Always Be.

Some people will never understand because they've never participated in something so grand.
At that moment, nothing else in your world matters...it's a feeling you never forget.
Memories for life!
I still get chills down my spine just thinking about it or how it felt when playing brass and the people in the stands cheering you on...
Go Cadets in 2011!!!
mdsopr 1 year ago 2
@mdsopr True that. I have not marched DCI yet but I did in high school and too be part of the best group in the state and one of many best in the Nation it was the best four years of my life and I wised it would of never gone away

Honestly, who the fuck would dislike this video?!?! I'm not a fan of the Cadets, but this video pretty much shows what all of us that march in the activity feel.

Great video! If this doesn't want to make you feel like marching, then you should never march! FHNSAB
screamintrumpett 1 year ago
