Class 220/221 (Voyager/super voyager) - Bombardier
Class 390 (pendolino) - Alstom
Class 43 (hst) - BREL
Just an insight :) In the UK virgin exclusively use class 390's , but other services use class 220's and 222's (which are slightly different to the rest of the 'voyager' classes.)
Both main lines end at Glasgow Central, but they start about 400 metres apart (Euston for WCML, King's Cross for ECML). Average journey times:
ECML: 6 hours
WCML (before pendolinos): 6 hours
WCML (with pendolinos): 4 hours 30 minutes.
Without increasing the speed, the finesse of the tilting alone shaved off 25% of the total time. Which was more than the trial of the flashing green aspects for the ECML achieved, and that was potentially dangerous anyway.
@MumblesCA They DID increase the maximum speed. Prior to the WCML modernisation it was 110mph not 125.
London KX to Edinburgh via the ECML takes about 4hr 30min. So for the equivalent distance there is not much in it. Except the trains on the ECML are nicer. That said both trains are in fact 140mph capable, but both restricted to 125.
Lots of copyrighted photographs contained in this video, i presume you went and got the photographers permission to include the photographs before hand?
@mishielai They're crap, a cheapo nasty option when the government and Sticky Dicky Branson (who didn't put a penny in) decided after the upheaval of privatisation and a lot of procrastination to "upgrade" the stock. Cheaply constructed and purchased trains and top whack to travel on them. No wonder Branson's always smiling.
Virgin trains are spastic trains. They don't run properly, they slow and stop in the middle of nowhere. They are over-priced, thanks largely to theiving scumbucket Richard Branson.
@Richardhedditch261 They're cheaper than GNER/East Coast - and when you first first class, food and drink is complementary - unlike GNER/NXEC/East Coast.
@Richardhedditch261 Actually they're a LOT cheaper then GNER and NXEC were, and to this day East Coast. Also on Virgin in first class food and drink is complementary, whereas East Coast you have to pay extra for everything.
But I will agree with you about the Voyagers...LOT to be desired there...
@Richardhedditch261 Hear, hear. They were also given government stabilisation packages in 2006 (eg 'Bailouts'), yet that fuckstick Branson takes £24,000,000 a year out of Virgin trains. "Trebles all round chaps!". Voyagers, shite, they're inter urban units not inter city, Pendolinos, shite, the one that crashed at Grayrigg was scrapped after Branson said it was "Built like a tank". I have seen old Mk3 stock survive worse (Colwich junction crash 1986) with no passenger fatalities.
@railman01 I was going to remove your comments, But i love them to much. There full of 'shite'. Why place a Pendolino back in to service which could risk lives, I bet if you would be really pissed off if you brought a ripp off ticket and then almost died as the faulty pendolino crashed again. Please feel free to move with the times, sadly the 87 day has been and gone.
Anyway, let look on the bright side you enjoyed the video and left many wonderful comments, Cheers. Remember railmam01
@railman01 1 - Is the pendo the fastest, safest and most economical train in britain today? Yes. 2 - woopee doo they have had 1 crash, tell me an oporator that hasnt had a break down or smash... 3 - if you dont like virgin/cross country trains, ride something else, but i doubt you will get far as they cover more of britain than any other company
@bmemodels07 Indeed it did. I think it hit a Class 142 somewhere in Cheshire, if I'm thinking of the correct one, around the turn of the millenium. The crash before is the Pendolino at Grayrigg in 2007, Virgin's other major accident.
@simonpercy6 The Winsford Crash where a Class 87 loco hit a Pacer Unit which was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Nobody was hurt because the Pacer unit was empty and not in service. The driver of the Virgin Class 87 saw it and brought the collision speed down to something like 60/70mph - which could potentially have been 110mph.
There were some injuries but luckily no fatalities - except for the entire UK pacer fleet which came under scrutiny for their pathetic crash worthiness.
I believe the crash shown here was one where a motorist fell asleep at the wheel and somehow his car went through one or more barriers and ended up causing this horrific crash.
The crash shown here is the one where a motorist fell asleep at the wheel and his vehicle somehow went through a barrier and on to track where it caused this horrific crash.
@malo66 Nope, it is actually Grayrigg, caused by missing stretcher bars on the points. The unit is 390033 "City of Glasgow" whch is an official write-off. One passenger died - amazing considering the train came off the track at approx. 96mph.
@simonpercy6 That crash at 3:40 was the Grayrigg accident where the train derailed and 1 person died all the others survived with fractures after been thrown around
not anymore, that belongs to either FGW, C2C or Chiltern Railways now.
I remember they use to do a london-shewsbury and london-blackpool north service, i dont think they would bring back the shewsbury service partly because wrexham and shropshire railway is already doing that so would soon arriva wales. but there planning to bring back the direst blackpool route once the line between preston-backpool N is electricfied.
@ShaoKarn335 I agree c2c barely ever have any problems. Idk about Chiltern because I don't live in that area, same with FGW. But the only recent bad thing that has happened to c2c is the fire at rainham, and that wasn't a c2c train!
I traveled on a Pendolino once, from Birmingham to London and thought it a massive improvement - that was a while back though, are pendolinos powered by electric only?
Hello, Yes the pendolino is an EMU. Runs on its own power by electric over head lines. However it can be powered by diesel if a Class 57 'thunderbird' is hauling it.
Would say one off the best Rail Companies, ashame with the Lack off HST's But easy for me to get up to scotland without changing once, and Have the Best Liverly on the Super Voyagers and Pendolino.
It sure is a shame about the HST's, they was planning on keep five a reducing the coachs on them when they were getting the voyagers and pendolino. However they was not allowed, in a model rail mag there a picture of a model HST in their new grey livery.
didnt the first virgin trains, used to be black and white, when i were about 4 or 5 i traveled with virgin and i went in black and white ones then the red and now the silver, i have traveled with virgin most of my life, never yet traveled in GNER gotta try them before i die !
