@Elhajea ... I still love it. One of my favorites of all-time. Timeless story, flawless execution. Like it better than Akira, Paprika and Spirited Away.
I remember when the sci-fi channel aired both movies man i feel old classic stuff by,leiji matsumoto.Glad discotek is gonna release it on dvd for the u.s few companys these days sell anime out of the 80's or 70's any way more.
@Progearspec Remember when the sci-fi channel used to be good!? I was up late one night as a kid and I think they showed this movie. I never knew what it was. Many years later I bought harlock saga thinking maybe that was it... but it wasn't. Same style though... and I never knew why. Until just yesterday on youtube I was searching and I saw that the same guy made different animes.. so now probably 15+ years later I finally know what movie I was watching on sci-fi that night!
I watched this when i was 8 with my mother... It was a beautiful movie... It made me cry... Laugh... and Hope... I had a crush on Maetel... Still do 10 years later! heh.
The animation in the movie was way cooler than the tv series, but I really didn't like the movie besides for that. The thing I hated about the movie is how Maetel doesn't fight or have weapons like she did in the original series.
@UnemployedBlackGuy I have the Nintendo DS game. It's a strategy RPG and it's mad hard. I can't even beat the androids that killed the main characters mom in the snow in the beginning of the movie
I remember seeing it on the Sci Fi channel and then going out and finding the movies on my own. Interestingly enough, they edited the HELL out of the films on Sci fi. I'm talking like a whole half hour was taken out. Also, interestingly enough, the soundtrack they use in THIS trailer is from the GE 999 tv series. Sadly there is no major release of these films on dvd. But, if you find them on bootleg, the translations are ripped from the out of print Viz releases. ;)
I feel you pain long long ago when it played on Sci Fi was when I really fell in love with this movie and it made me into the anime geek I am today... I wish they would re-release the unedited again!
I remember when they used to show this on the Sci-Fi channel back when they had like...their Saturday afternoon anime thing that they did. Thems was the days.
Sci Fi's Anime Saturdays and MST3K were the reasons I subscribed to satellite - but now I rarely watch the channel. It's too bad that so many cable and satellite companies refused to work with Anime Network to make them a 24/7 station. Maybe they felt that if AN was on air all the time, no one would watch anything else.
That saturday afternoon special really is what got me into anime back when I was about 10 or 11 years old (I'll be turning 20 years old in three weeks if that tells you how long ago this was). I finally rediscovered this movie about two weeks ago, but there's still one movie I can't remember. It was a weird movie where random things kept happening throughout this town, like a tank going into a pool, and they took a plane to find out that the city was on the back of a giant turtle. What was it
OH GOD!!! That seems SO familiar to me but I have no ideal what it was, THANKS ALOT, now that's going to drive ME crazy! haha, well, if you figure it out...let me know.
It took me a year to find the movie you and I were trying to think of, but I finally found it. It's a movie called Urusei Yatsura - Movie 2: Beautiful Dreamer. Apparently Urusei Yatsura was a pretty famous manga/anime series back in the early 80s, centering around the cast of Ranma 1/2. You have no idea how excited I was when I finally found that movie, now if only I could remember the movie I thought this series was about. You know, the train one.
Never mind on the train thing, I realized about 5 minutes after I posted the comment that this IS the train movie. Silly me. Too bad that this movie isn't even available on DvD on Amazon.
@Dyonivan It was announced last week that Discotek Media licensed both this movie and Adieu Galaxy Express 999 so they should be available on DVD next year. ;)
I just looked up the movie you told me about and it isn't the same one. The one I'm thinking of took place in a bustling city in the future, alien life had come to Earth and had integrated into our society.
@Dyonivan I know this is a year late, but I know this one. It's Urusei Yatsura - Beautiful Dreamer. The second film I believe, usually considered the best. It's part of a series of films in the Urusei Yatsura anime series. The anime series itself is quite good and is based on a manga of the same name by the creator of Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha among others. It's nothing at all like anime today.
@Dyonivan I watched this movie, when I was around 13-14 year old. I am sure that you are right. This movie is long time ago. Because now I am 41 year old. I believe that you could not imagine how old this movie is. I can not remember the story of this movie clearly. However I impress this movie so much, because the song is very nice and I was falling in love with the lady in the movie. When I was young, I felt this lady was very beautiful.
@Dyonivan Holy crap! I remember seeing that same anime on...Sci Fi? A bunch of high school kids launched this ship out of the city and end up in space. Off the ledge, they see that they're on the back a giant turtle. I'm gonna start looking for that now. Any help finding this anime will be greatly appreciated since I was sure that I dreamed it up.
@Dyonivan yea i have the same experience its like the main character was waking up from a dream over over and i remember the tank drove through a wall.
@Dyonivan I believe the movie you are refering to is "Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer". i see your comment was two years ago, sorry i didn't see it sooner. but that was a movie that i rented and copied onto VHS back in '93 i think. my video store had a lot of anime.
@bobbyrice ...yes, Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer, was a masterstroke, an I too, copied it onto VHS from Laserdisc. - magnificent film...my videostore had this an Armitage and a few more anime' including Space Adventure Cobra.
they don't make anime like this anymore it's mostly that cutesy generic shit now a days.
