Super high tempo because you can't change tempo.

So if you want to insert a note halfway between two notes, you have to DOUBLE the tempo, and space everything twice as far apart.

This is because Mario Paint Composer isn't the actual Mario Paint game's composer. It's built to look like it, of course, but it doesn't have many of its limitations.

on average, about how long does it take you to make a video like this? Also do you use sheet music or go by ear?

It usually takes me roughly 6 hours to transcribe a minute of music, accurately. This is of course affected by the complexity of the passage. After that I usually clean it up. In this individual video, I spent far too much time changing little details, and it took me in between 25-30 hours to complete.
