@ alexisnihon1 He was performing in the studio of the Early Show (a morning TV show) on CBS network. The segment where they feature musicians on the show is called Second Cup Cafe.
@alexisnihon1 it was the set of the CBS early show. That keyboard is capable of playing back pre recorded sequences. I'm sure thats the case here and they are all playing to a click track
Absolutely amazing. Back in Britain, where I used to live, you could forget all that heartthrob shit about Gino. He was looked at as a musician's musician, and the people I knew in bands, especially jazzy ones, all dug him, and in fact, introduced me to him. I still play my vinyl copy of this. Yecannaewhackhim!
He kinda got the rotten end of the stick in the states. The media wrote him off as a pretty boy, flavor of the day. Not me. Always been a big fan. I turn people on to him now. They say, "Who is that?" I say Gino Vannelli. He rocks!
OMG!!! I am so happy to see this!! I saw Gino several times in the 70's, before he was caught on the "mainstream" radar radio stations. Always a top notch musician and performer, and STILL my favorite male vocalist!!!
I saw my very first concert EVER in 1977 at The Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. I was 13 and went with my big brother who was 20. I had never smelled what he described as "a sweet and sour smell" that turned out to be pot, which I will never forget. But, more importantly was THIS man! He changed the direction of my musical tastes and everything that I listened to after that. I know every lyric of every song of his and here's a perfect example of why!! GO GINO!!!
I saw him all those years ago too. I smelled that sweet smell too. I was about 17. Have been a big fan ever since. He changed my musical taste too. Jazz, and beyond.
Great arrangement of that classic Vannelli song. The bass is definitely playing the synth part , with effect of some sort . I think octaver for starters ,because of were on the neck he is playing to achieve the proper tone , when using this effect. The bassist has a large pedal board in front of him, very cool.
The bass makes this tune, he's using some kind of synth or octave divider to get that sub low sound that's huge. It thunders! Anybody know what he's using?
Well I know Joe Vannelli used to write all that stuff on synth bass but looking at the video and watching the bass player play the lines it seems to me that he's the one covering that part. The keyboard player is comping the chord parts on the Rhodes sound. I'll look at it again...
Terrific performance - does Gino do any other kind? Always an electrifying entertainer, a great talent. Agree that he is greatly underappreciated - I have never understood that either. Always has excellent musicians and the music and arrangements are high quality.
I just emailed Gino to see if I can get a line on Joe to ask him about his chord deal. See if anything happens... I can hear most of them, it's his dominant 7 turnarounds that lose me. He has so many inversions and substitutions for everything. Very cool stuff!
I have followed Gino for the past 35 years and at last I have finally seen him in Las Vegas last weekend. This guy is amazing. The whole performance was every bit as good as his records. Crystal clear and full of life. He performed with the guys in this vid and I can only say the whole event was mind blowing. What a truly fantastic star this guy is. The most amazing thing is when I mention his name to folk they say "Gino who?' Their loss!
What a great classic chart. I believe this chart goes back to Giino's second album called Powerful People. One of my biggest regrets is that I never had the opportunity to see Gino perform live back in the 70's. You just don't find this type of musicanship in todays artists, very sad.
I took the LSD and aura-aurally experienced the composition:A PAUPER IN PARADISE by Gino Vannelli...FANTASTIC...An hour later I was being chased down by Salvador Dali's sinister undulating floating dirty sheet...I got away:)
magichypnochic: Thanks so much for the info. I thought it might be a guitarist I played in a band with 30 yrs. ago - in fact if you saw this guy (and had heard his talent back then), you'd do a double take, too. Thanks again.
Love Gino!!!! music is shit today except for his 2nd cousin, looks like him except the hair, can sings high and low like him too. check out his cuz{scott brooklyn)ruvolo I love them both but scott does everything himself---sings ,writes, plays all instruments, guitar, bass, drums, horns, you gotta hear him on myspace music.
Gino is great and always will be. I do notice he doesn't sing with the enormous vocal gymnastics he once did in the 70's and early 80's. But his singing is still great and he's still THE MAN! GO GINO!!!!
In all my years (54)I have never been fortunate enough to have seen Gino in concert, but I have always loved his music. This man is totally awesome - like fine wine -getting better with age.
Saw him in 77 and again in 90.Was dragged to the 77 show (wasn't all that thrilled about going) and had my shit completely blown away. Not only was the performance killer but the sound was so crystal clean and clear that the unbelievable volume level didn't even hurt.Same with the 90 show and I was even sitting right in front of a stack.I'll never forget either one-highly recommend seeing this..
Right on about the sound. In fact, it was not until I saw Alison Krauss last year that I ever heard concert sound anywhere near Vannelli's in the late 70s. In one concert, one of his percussionists was playing several latin instruments way in the back, not even close to a mike and you could hear it clear as day. Incredible.
Um evidently you dont understand the meaning of "yall betta shed"..You must not be ethnic or churchy are ya? This phrase is saying that they are really playing well,is that better for ya there lil buddy.(smile)
Hey Mr. G, I have your video of Gino's outro to Santa Rosa embedded on my Myspace page. You are pretty damn good yourself. I was impressed. When will you post some more stuff on YouTube? Ifya want me to take it down I will......Gino is great. I'm a longtime fan, been in love with him since I was.....wellnevermind.....
Oh, thanks a lot! Kind words, indeed. You're more than welcome to have the video on your MySpace page, of course! =) I hadn't planned on doing any more Gino stuff for the time being, but now that you asked I might take another look at it. After all, I really love the music so very much! We'll see how it turns out, it'll probably be something from Brother to Brother, Nightwalker or Black Cars in that case. =)
What a great song! Brings back so many good memories. Great sound as well. Too bad the guitarist at 2.27 thought that the solo was over. Just one chord so what the heck..
Gino is so great, and that drummer! He always has such great people playing with him. And he always looks like he can't believe he gets to have so much fun. Nice one, thanks for this!

Gino's bro Joe was into the recording technologies so all was left was great sound. And those funky keyboard rhythms! Great!
Unfortunately today artists just don't get the chance to show their stuff because of the format of alot of today's stuff.
Don't say for a moment the young folks don't know how to set the grove down.
Check out Jeff Beck and Tal Wilkenfeld -Cause We Ended as Lovers.
