  • This is the only source of info I have found on 'amp settings' for the guitar that explains the 'behind the scenes' facts about how to dial in the sound in a band enviroment, here at about 4.40 explains it very well! Rock stars and guitar gods of the world will never tell you it, and when they do they only give you an idea of where the amp sounds good on its own (or maybe they could be trying to keep their 'high gain shred cred'! I dunno!) This video helped me a lot! Good one!!

  • OMG!!!! BILL LOOKS LIKE MESSI!!!!!!!

  • I wish I would have had your videos when I was a young guitarist

  • Really good video.

  • u sound like the old spice guy

  • Doesn't anyone use their good old ears any more? It's that simple. You don't have to be a Rocket Scientist to figure this out....Duh!!!

  • @lynchrisrc so why are you watching it?

  • Nevermind- Christy Music is in Slidell, LA.... No wonder I knew of them- I grew up there and thats where I bought my first pedalboard (sorry for the trip down Nostalgic lane guys)

  • Excellent video. Explained what kind of sounds you get from EQ.... BTW isn't Christy Music in Nashville???

  • This was excellent! Thanks a ton for this video!

  • does anyone here knows what is the function of reverb on guitar amp?? please answer immediately

  • @MrNil3000 When reverb is turned all the way up it will echo the sound and drag the note out, and if its turned down it will sound more crisp and clean

  • I have a 30 watt Marshall amp now and I was wondering what would be some good metalcore settings? I play in drop d so yeah. Thanks if anyone can share. =]

  • @jedimastergarcia87 Hey man, Drop the mids way down and up the bass and treb a bit.

  • You wont believe.

I keep my bass down, middle to half and treble almost maxed out and my strat(with buckers) still sounds sooo bassy.

  • @Eldererr get a eq pedal, it's way better!

  • Is it possible for something to be so informative yet so inspirational at the same time? :'D

  • Hey, this is a great video! You did a fantastic job explaining!

  • MIDS ARE THE POINT OF MUSIC! FOR BASS GUITAR EVEN MORE!!!

  • Nice video :) Getting your guitar to cut through and sound wide and awesome isn't easy! Thanks for shining some light on the subject :)

  • cool, Im gonna try bass 3 mid 7 and treb 5 with the band.

  • Listen to your ears. Look at your eyes. Feel your hands. Smell your nose. Taste your tongue. ? xD

  • is this zone music?

  • Very informative and well made, thank you.

  • Well I dont care what other people think, I think you explained this in a very profesional manner. Your message was clear and understandable, AND the most important thing, It was put in a clear memorable manor. Thanks

  • tcha tcha tcha tcha

  • Body, voice, Atttack!! :P

  • you're good man!

  • Is this filmed in bayshore music store?

  • You are a godsend. Wonderful advice :)

  • I would say the Mids are the body, that's what it is to me anyway.

And the Hi-Mid to High is the voice.

  • You know what YOu just rock!!! You have made it so clear!!!Thnx Buddy!!!

  • Very nice! A good, friendly and clear explanation for the n00bs.

  • Awesome explanation Bro.

  • good shit,homie.

  • you rock dude

  • AWESOME! this helped a ton!\

  • Dude, you have no idea how you helped me with this vid.

    Thanks, man!

And yeah, I have to admit, I was actually skeptical about getting advice from a Skid Row groupie,(LOL just kidding man) but damn, I was FREAKING wrong. This vid is THE shit.

  • 2:18 How can I mod my amp to change colors like yours ? I have a VOX AD50VT. :D

  • Very nicely explained. Doesn't help me much, I'm a flat-frequency-response Hiwatt kind of guy, but a lot of good information.

  • Great video man!!

  • Couldn't be more right. Ive listened to band play live and the only thing I hear from the guitarist's amp is a huge fart because they scooped their mids. Without those mids, your not going to cut through and be heard.

  • thankyou sir Bill:)

  • My amp :)

  • Could anyone tell me how to use a analog eq? I have no idea how to work it

  • Comment removed

  • This dude has just answered a question in 7 mins that nearly EVERY 'Expert' in my local guitar shops mumble on about for about half hour pretending they know what they are talking about and I still walk out confused..... THANK YOU... Now to piss off my neighbours with my new found knowledge.... CRANK IT UP!!!!!!! But I'll scoop the mids cos I'm on my own.....

  • @noeski100 what's the point of scooping them?

  • zooming in and out makes me dizzy...

  • ya great vid!!!!

  • I was sceptic about good ol' Bill, but this was a excellent video. May I never judge a book by its ponytail and shorts ever again. Thanks.

  • At least someone who know about guitar eq, I was searching for this a loooong time ago.

  • Are those jorts he's wearing?!?!

  • @strikingjoe01 That's an OK strategy, but it really won't get you too far, unless you play just rhythm, in which case, you don't need to get far.

  • guitars are mid range instruments so i really dont know why people scoop the mids, unless the whole song is palm muted you lose so much clarity.

  • 6.57 ...listen to your ears. lol

  • This was so helpful. Thank you very much!

  • he makes it sound like we need to crank every setting.

  • @guitarlordification

    Not really.

  • AWESOME!!!

  • I hope it's not only because I just watched some Expert Village crap.... but you really seem to know what you're talking about! Good vid!

  • Thank you soooooo much man.

  • By far the best video concerning amp equilizers on the net. Great explainations. Nailed it!

  • Good vid man!

I wish more people would focus on their mids, instead of just scooping them. This video gives a great insight. Without mids, unless you're "chugging" the guitar's detail gets lost in a band setting.

    Awesome!

  • WOW lots of passion this man really cares.Hes great.Alot of great advice from all the vids.

  • very good common sense application-thx

  • This is the most philosophical gear video I have ever seen. I feel moved.

  • 3:42

"You'll probably hear Tcha Tcha Tcha Tcha Tcha Tcha Tcha" ...

    LoL

Great lesson, helped me a lot

    thanks

  • Guitar Amplification 101. Just what I needed. Thanks!

  • you just helped me out a lot! thank you!!

it's so true I always turn my mid all the way down at home while jamming to myself, but when i'm at practice or gigging I'm never happy with the sound :P hopefully I wont now :D just need to turn the mid up! thank you so so so so much ahh

  • you just helped me out a lot! thank you!!

it's so true I always turn my mid all the way down at home while jamming to myself, but when i'm at practice or gigging I'm never happy with the sound :P hopefully I wont now :D just need to turn the mid up! thank you so so so so much ahha!

  • that guy was a little to excited about the treble

  • Lol he said meat... then thickness... >.>

  • Body, Voice, Attack..... Fist Pump....

  • Its hard to take this dude seriously with shorts like that..

  • 21 people are deaf..

  • Roger that Captain!

  • Good info man!

  • this guy is pro!

  • fantastic video. I like how you describe base, mid, and treble. Nice talk about the guitar being in a mid range and distortion. And the band setting.

  • woaw this is a great video. it gives u the basics of setting you amp!

  • what a useless video. this is basic A and B for guitar players nobody needs this advice its pointless like aksing someone to breathe. if you dont know this quit the electric guitar and go for sth acoustic

  • @thenazgullord

You'd be surprised at how many people don't realize how the mids affect their sound live. Stop trollin, stop hatin, and realize this.

  • @thenazgullord Lol, is that you Steve Vai?

  • @Alio15 to you yes boy

  • 3.44 \m/

  • You want me to listen to my ears?

  • A strat with cranked treble, is there any higher frequency?

  • @lachlanmornard

A Tele with cranked treble, cranked presence, and the bright switch on :P

  • @Shinozoku Hahaha, yeah, that'd be just as high as a mosquito.

  • Excellent vid dude! Very informative and helpful and think your enthusiasm for awesome too :) good job!

  • great video and great advice. most new guitarists never spend enough time with the EQ to properly adjust it to the sound they're looking for. They automatically look for pedals or other guitars before even fiddling with whats already there!

  • subscribed, amazing video!

  • Very Helpful Lessons, Thank You Very Much Dude!!!

  • good explaination.

  • 3:14 to 3:25 best explaination ever XD

  • Question: If my guitar effect (Boss ME-70) has its own EQ settings, what do I do with the EQ on my amp?

  • 3:43 ...cha-cha-cha....chia pets? :D

  • body...voice..attack ok i think i got it

  • when i play a power chord it just sound vibration on distorted what can i do to make a clearer sound

  • @zucca3902 turn down the distortion, dont stand right in front of the amp, or facing it, and give it more treble

  • how do u get this tone for sharon mate i can not find the right one i have a line 6 spider 4 wat should i set it to??

  • great job man, You are great at explaining things, I couldn't have said it better!

  • Wow this video is fucking excellent.

  • Respect mate, tnx alot!

  • @Quakelord1991 It could be because you're simply out of tune.

  • I get this wobbly sound now whenever I play a power chord using distortion. What can effect this and how can I make it sound straight?

  • @Quakelord1991 the evil cookie is right, haha it may not even be that your out of tune but that your bending your strings slightly which makes the notes themselves slightly out of tune making a vibrating/humm sound

  • hey thanks. this has helped a lot with some eq issues ive been having :) keep up the great videos

  • And when you have a pedal do you to change the eq on your amp?

  • Same thing for pedals?

  • He should write a book :-)

  • What does the presence knob do exactly?

  • @bigcatroberts It gives you....well more presence haha. It makes you sound more "right there" so to say. More "in the room" and an alive sound. It tends to brighten up your sound as well.

  • @bigcatroberts makes it from very warm and bright.

  • Dude what trick can I pull to fake a hollow body sound like Stray Cats, with a stratocaster?

  • ~what would be a better clean amp eq settings, for a dirt pedal user

  • Thanks man - good vid

  • I'm bookmarking this page!. THANK YOU VERY MUCH! Honestly, this is the best video on youtube bar none. Beginner guitar and bass players should watch this video before they plug into an amp. Please get into more details about presence on a amp. Also please tell me how to get that "scooped" sound from a amp. Thanks! LOL!

  • i feel like runnign up and giving this guy a high five and be like your a gangsta! i swear that made the most sense in so long!

  • Good advise on using the amps EQ!!

  • thank a lot for that dude

  • Hey it's Randall Graves from Clerks! I love that character.

  • Thanks for that Epiphany about the Midrange. I'm playing through a Hughes & Kettner Switchblade. When I'm in my room the distortion sound is amazing and the leads as well. I use those same settings live and, not only does it sound muddy, I have to turn an 100W amp to 7 to be heard. Thanks for the great advice, Bill!

  • Can I approximate of fake the sound of a hollow body guitar like a Gretsch, with a stratocaster and eq magic?

  • @contact1araya ...try an acoustic simulator pedal then distort the shit out of it...

  • hey thanks for the info im going to try that now .

  • 31 different bands of EQ? :O sweet lord. I struggle enough with 3.

Very awesome, there really is a lack of this on the net. Very Cool, finally someone that knows what he's talking about.

  • And now soldiers, aim at the body, lower your voice and....ATTACK!

  • dude this will help me sooo much!! thankyouu!!

i often wonder why i cant seem to get the right sound when im playing with my band, and why my guitar sound seems to just get lost in the band and not shine through if you know what i mean :P

  • helped a ton. thanks

  • great lesson helped me alot!!!!!

    thanks bro! :D

  • what amp is that?

  • What series is that strat?

  • Really Helpful!

Like how you explain the sounds in more detail and use cool words like calling the bass the thumb, treble the attack, and so on. keep up the good work. You talk about all the switches and make them sound so good I think I should have them all cranked up!

  • Presence is well....just......MORE!

  • @Pwnersupreme What tube amp do you prefer?

  • my amp doesnt have bass and it does not give out the rocking tune reply?

  • @Pwnersupreme When I get some money I will try to look for some good tube amps, but tube amps cost usually more money.

  • great video man, thanx!

  • Thanks dude! :D

  • Thank You so much!!

  • Great Video. Very Helpful. Thanks!!!

  • I have a Line 6 spider 4 amp with a boss distortion petal, the three guitars a I use are an Jackson, Epiphone Les Paul, and Epiphone SG.

I really want a mixture of Breaking Benjamin/ Atreyu/ Avenged Sevenfold sound. Any settings or tips anyone has??

  • I love how enthusiastic this guy is. ATTACK ATTACK!

  • This dude is great. He's like a preacher of the guitar gospel. Thanks for the help!

  • damn. that's actually a really impressive explanation. i wish there were more vids on here like this.

  • a lot of thanx..

  • This is a pretty good tutorial, but here is my down & dirty rule for improving guitar tone:

Turn down the friggin' treble & reverb.

  • great video! it's nice to have someone actually explain how the equalizers work rather than just telling the settings that sound 'awesome'

  • Maybe a little personal tip from my experience to add to those very good hints in the video: On some amps (mostly tube-amps i found), when the mids seem very "nasal", sometimes the bass is the problem. You often have too much bass and don't realise it, instead you scoop the mids out, because you have the impression htat they ruin your sound. Don't do that! Turn back the bass a bit, and then start experimenting with the mids again. I had to learn that on my own, hopefully it helps anyone. =)

  • I agree with the other comments. Everybody takes for granted ,that its easy to just instinctively "know" what to do with the EQ on your amp. no one actually explains it. And you are exactly right in your explaination. I am SURE you helped alot of people stop sounding like shit. Thanx from all of us with ears!!

  • @mattsmithpaving: Yeah, totally right. What i found to be the most essential thing was the hint that you have to re-adjust your mids if you change your surroundings or play along with other instruments. When I started playing guitar, nobody ever told me! Like most "kids" ;), I wanted attack, distortion, an agressive sound. So bass and treble/presence up, mids out, like I read on the internet. I took me some time to realise how to adjust the mids. Good video!

  • Nice video, this was really helpfull ^^

  • You're a champ! Your explanation was spot on. Thanks for sharing this vital foundational knowledge. Cheers!

  • Im little bit confused right now.I play acoustic guitar for 2 years and now i bought an electric guitar.I already have an amp but it's a little bit retarded. It only has volume, gain, low, and high knobs. So what should i do in order to get some good tone on my guitar which is so far impossible to me.And i have one more question do i need to first set those knobs on my guitar(there are two of them)or on amp.Someone please help!

  • @lemmycro, if you don't have a good amp, it's gonna be hard to get good tone, no matter what kinda knobs are on it. some of the best sounding amps are old tube amps with nothing but a volume control. i would first suggest getting a better amp if you wanna get good tone.

secondly, when you EQ your amp, set both your guitar's knobs on full. i'm guessing they're a volume and tone knob. after you eq your amp, you can use your volume and tone knobs to do as you please from time to time.

  • Nice vid. Basic is still crucial

  • nice one goot tip could you post a few veriations for us

  • Thanks bro!!!

  • can anyone help me with the amp settings for a peavey rage 258, and the pick up settings for an epiphone sg? im learning sharp dressed man and i cant get it right. and this video helped a lot, just not specific enough to my guitar or amp

  • I been trying to find good tips on how to set the Reverb, Resonance and presence to get an awsome tone playing on stage, (Tube Amp) because when you try to set it you cant really tell until you go away at a distance it might sound diferent from what your trying to get. ????

  • @qklsjdv i know what you mean mine: when i adjusting the tone sound okay when im close when im far it sound funny

  • I got a question, does anybody know how to switch from different pedals in a split second? not like turning one pedal off then turning the other one on? because when your playing a song onstage, you dont have time in the middle of a song. For instance, if your using a Phase 90 and turn one the distion +, then it will sound like crap unless you turn the phase 90 off.???

  • Baaahhh!! this guy is a genius, that means the when i want more treble i turn up the trebles??? Wow!!!

    I didnt know that.

Teach something good, not this c#ap!

  • i agree what he express for body , voice and attack

  • Ok, very helpful, but what if you have high-mid and low-mid?

    <------- very confused...

  • thank u that was great
