  • Greet and great.

  • ah, magnificent, as usual !!!!!!

  • Sin duda alguna, la música de antes es, con una diferencia bastante notoria, mejor que la de ahora.

  • Gostei muito, há ai instrumentos bem mais antigos do que os que são usados normalmente em orquestras hoje em dia! *________*

  • 'Is it not strange that sheep's guts could hail souls out of men's bodies?" (Ol' Shake)

  • I will see him tomorrow live at the St. Reinoldi Church in Dortmund. I'm so looking forward to this !!!

  • Sublime... magnífico vehículo que nos conduce a aquellas alturas de las que jamás debería descender el ser humano: la cultura, la dignidad y la belleza que enaltecen el espíritu y justifican nuestro fugaz paso por este mundo...

  • Very impressive. Just can't get enough of this Renaissance music.

  • Que maravilla.

  • It doesn't get any better than this.

  • As you can see, I wrote it as it was written on the screen of the Mezzo broadcast.

  • The correct name is "Innocenzo Alberti"

  • I love this super exquisite and refined version of Antique Musique.

  • 00:20 - should the second fret be like this?

  • thanks for uploading, it's brilliant! would you happen to know how the small bowed instrument is called ? the one played by Savall

  • @ninioritalin88

As far as I know it calls viola da gamba.

  • @kwertmil yeah that's the one played by the blonde, I looked it up and it's called treble viol. Thanks anyway!

  • @ninioritalin88

In portuguese this instrument is called "Viola d'arco"

  • @ninioritalin88

    Viola d'arco (in portuguese)

  • @ninioritalin88 :

The viola da gamba comes in 6 sizes, from smaller to greater: "pardessus de viole", treble, alto, tenor, bass, and contrabass (also known as a violone). Jordi Savall is playing here a treble viola I think.

  • @ninioritalin88 treble viol its in the description

  • @ninioritalin88 This is a family of instruments of different sizes (and thus, pitches). I think he is playing a "dessus de viole" (French "dessus" meaning "over", or "upper").

There is still a smaller and higher one, called "pardessus de viole".

  • @AlainNaigeon Hoping I won't be prooved wrong by a player of these wonderful instruments, which I'm not, unfortunately.

To know the correct end genuine names, better ask a native English speaker - but not an American one, since, AFAIK, viol was already out of fashion when US were created ;-)

Viol consorts were extremely appreciated in England during the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

  • @AlainNaigeon OMG I see it now, it's called "treble viol" in the info panel.

  • @ninioritalin88 it's called a pardessus, the smallest instrument of the viola da gamba family (5 strings, not 6 like most of the other viols). everyone else in this video playing a bowed instrument is playing a viol (viola da gamba) of some size (bass, tenor, treble).

  • @ninioritalin88

It's a soprano viola da gamba/viol in the style of the Italian Renaissance. It's got 6 strings and is tuned in D, a full octave above the bass viol.

  • @ninioritalin88

  • @ninioritalin88 the name of the instrument is viola da braccio !

  • @ninioritalin88 lyra viol

  • @ninioritalin88

its an treble viol, the smallest instrument of the vila da gamba (or viol in english) family

  • i love the blond,,, so beautiful and yet intelligent.. a white lady..

  • @DrEvilenko This is quite funny what you say because beauty and intelligence usually go along... maybe not equally but still...

  • I'm so glad you' ll come to play in Iasi ( Romania) !

  • I love this video! Is there any chance that Mezzo will offer it up for sale on DVD or Blu-ray?

The playing is exquisite! The red-haired woman (uncredited) playing the tenor viol reminds me of a Madonna done by Raphael.

  • simplemente maravilloso...

  • diese Frauen sind si bezaubernd mit ihren instrumenten/ these wemon ae so fastinating with their instruments. sie breingen diese epoche wirklich klasse rüber , natürlich liegt das auch an den Herrn Savall

  • this blondie is certainly a star of the show.. i just love the way she's giving mean looks...

  • ¡ belleza en estado puro !

  • I agree, the blonde gives the entire ensemble a rather Hapsberg look. Most appropriate for the music. I think a young lady with similar features was also the model for an angel in a choir of angels in a painting from the Renaissance period.

And by, lovely rendition of this piece by Alberti.

  • OMG! Jorvall Sida!

  • Only the most beautiful women play beautiful music.

  • @Draeka Wrong!!

  • Simpy put, it's beautiful.

  • In addition, the noble man of Wessex and Kent study in Rome and learn Latin, they use Latin names very often even the King of Wessex and the King of Kent was crowned by the bishop of Canterbury. Any way The Duke of Normandy William the conqueror starts the actual crown. First the Cesars Rome, then the Popes Rome. Even Henry the eight was Latin erudite. In fact, there was no need to live the English soil to write Italian style music. No big deal then

  • In that time many things in England was Italian style, starting with the name of the instruments, the way to play them, the way to write music, the cloth, etc. like the Roman cult in England during a thousand years, By the way, Britain is a Latin name, the roman emperor Claudius found Britain as a Roman province. Only four centuries later the first Saxon tribes arrives to Wessex and the first English tribes arrive to Kent. During four centuries there was no English in Britain.

  • Is an italian piece, is not an error.

  • Wunderschön!

  • Very nice!

Please check out my new performance of some french baroque music by Robert de Visée aswell!

  • CD's booklet (by Peter Holman):

...though the first complete viol consort apparently did not cross the Channel until 1540, when a group of six Jewish- Italian players arrived at Henry VIII's court from Venice...

The "Pavin of Albarti" and its galliard are probably by Albert of Venice (+1557), one of the Jewish-Italian court string consort, while the pavan and galliard is labelled "Innocents", perhaps a reference to his colleague Innocent of Cremona (+1603) who joined the group in 1550.

  • Does anyone know what venue this was performed at?

  • C'est magnifique! Je l'ai écouté sans doute vingt fois, mais ce ne sera jamais assez. i Muchas gracias !

  • Великолепный ансамбль. И какая отличная музыка. Очень современно звучит на этих старинных инструментах.

  • Las violas del rey Sol

  • Absolutely superb! Thanks a mil!

  • Un enchantement comme toujours avec Jordi Savall.

  • According to New Grove, Innocentio Alberti prepared a madrigal collection for the Earl of Arundel, so it's not unlikely that he could visit England...

By the way, the blonde hair violist is Imke David and the other girl is Johanna Valencia. In the CD which Savall recorded with this music, this pavana appears as "Pavin of Albarti".

  • These tunes are indeed a genius.

The ear appreciates these musical notes that give joy, peace and serenity.

    !Viva Forever classical music !

  • Top notch performances as one soon expects of Jordi Savall. Serious, but fun at the same time.

  • Actually this is a pan-Euopean 'standard'; there are dozens of versions of it. It can be dangerous to call any version of music like this the 'original'. The melody varies a bit depending on the source, but the chord progression seems to have been ubiquitous, and hugely popular right into the 17th century. Check out this cut from another old Savall recording: Diferencias sobre 'La Dama le demanda' I have also heard it recently on a disk of 16th/17th century Polish music!

  • What is the keyboard instrument?

  • A little positive organ.

  • @SarniaLute Oops I didn't mean for my comment to appear 3x, sorry youtubers! "Positive Organ" is the name of it? It makes a very interesting sound, it's a bit odd. I like it A LOT!

  • What is the keyboard instrument?

  • What is the keyboard instrument?

  • excelente piece

  • Muzyka naprawdę wspaniała!

  • c'est vraiment magnifique

  • We don't have a time machine to travel in time, but luckily we have Jordi Savall who brings music of the past to us. He is brilliant and I'm a big fan!

  • Subtle accompaniment by the resplendently hirsute percussionist, Pedro Estevan.

  • Just another example of Hesperion XXI's excellence in the craft of music. For over thirty years they have been bringing the music of the Renaissance to our age in unparalleled fashion.

  • where i can this buy?

  • Muy buen música.

  • How to I track down and purchase this on DVD!?!? A little web research seems to indicate there is nothing available on DVD (video) of Hesperion XX/XXI. Hmmm. Anybody know?

  • @CyReX2 Oh.. wow, gee thanks for all your wisdom. I think your brilliant analysis and interpretation leaves no room for doubts.

What a glorious musical review you just did!

Now, go watch some of your internet memes and lolcats you just gotta love, and maybe laugh a bit with ol' star wars kid. THAT'S real fun!

  • Chingados, cual es el pedo con este wey?

  • What a heart refreshing music - thank you so much for upload!

  • is it a treble viol, 2 tenor viols, 2 bass viols, 7 course lute and wood pipe organ? (not sure about viols)

Faszinierend!!

  • Dieser Mann ist einfach genial. Jordi du bist der beste.

  • The dark-haired girl is hot! I want to marry her.

  • The piece is not as stated on the CD (following a widespread error) by Innocenzo Alberti, an Italian composer who never put his foot on English soil, but by Albert Kellim. Its only source is a collection of British manuscript partbooks, there are no concordances existing for this piece.

  • Thanks for this accurate info. However I cannot change the record from Mezzo where Innocenzo Alberti is mentioned(((

  • Any way English music of that time was really Italian music. Cloth, culture and every thing. Starting with the name of the instruments, the system to write music etc.

  • Rome starts Britain and I remark that is a Latin word. 4 centuries there was no English in Britain, when Wessex and Kent start anglo/saxon England period, I mean many centuries later, the nobles use Latin names and study in Rome, and they have a bishop of Canterbury. at least one thousand years of Latin cult. (Even Henry the Eight, one thousand years later, was Latin erudite)

  • ) The Norman Guillermo the conqueror starts the actual crown. Fist the Cesars Rome then the Popes Rome. No big deal then

  • @Nini19733791 Is this true? I wondered about that. After Ferrabosco, who knows who is English as there was a time when the sun never set on the English empire...

  • beautiful music

  • That Is not Phillippe Pierlot, but Johanna Horvath Valencia on the tenor viol in this piece!

  • Merveilleuse interprétation : la musique est enfin comprise ! Merci !

  • awosome! and divine..

  • fantastic music! Anyway the correct name is Innocentio Alberti ^^

  • As you can see, I took the author's name directly from the Mezzo annotation on the screen (have a look at the beginning of the play).

  • Yes, i saw it, but in the italian encyclopedias and music books he's called innocentio, in the latin way. I think that inozzenzo would be an english way to call him, infact he worked many years in Great Britain. Anyway, who cares..

  • Ok. Thanks for the info anyway, I'll remember it at least for myself:)

  • you're welcome! Thank you for uploading this beautiful videos

  • great music ,thank you !

  • This is so good! It makes me cry my eyes out!

  • that blonde playing the gamba looks like a habsburg princess taken from a painting by velasquez...

  • @Forcroi she also looks like she needs some sleep

  • @Forcroi

Hehe thats no German. She's Celtic. Tell by the knuckles and the skin tone. ;)

  • Thx, I thought that. I was wondering if there are instruments that have seperate frets for each string, for a non-tempered tuning?

  • why is it the one gamba has (the blonde one is playing) 2 atilt frets?

  • I cannot answer on your question - I don't know...

  • Because in the Meantone tuning they are using, enharmonic notes are not actually the same pitch, so gamba player occasionally will split a fret so they can get both notes in tune.

  • Jordi Savall and his music are so moving. If possible, I'd like to know if there is a cd of this concert. Please tell me the label.

  • @hardyromeo: I do not know whether this performance was recorded and released on CD but Jordi Savall usually releases his work through his own label, Alia Vox

  • jordi savall and all the people who play with him are simply gods

  • I love Hesperion XX
