Both my cats are having them. 1 is 22 and has had them for 4 years due to repetitive clicking sounds, but has now gone deaf so no longer has them, but my other is 18 and started earlier this month and is thought 2 be a tumor on the brain, she's being put down tomorrow. :(
@ChrisSurawy Thanks, was hard since she was 18 and I'm only 18 myself, she started off in great spirits in the morning, running up and down the stairs, playing around in the garden like a kitten, then from 5pm - 9pm she had 5 fits/seizures, and at 10pm she had a fit/seizure for 35 minutes and wouldn't come out of it, thats when the vet came to the house and ended her suffering. Thanks for that, lightened my mood a little.
@caspa2204 It sounds like she had a great day and you got the chance to say goodbye. Cats have a habit of taking themselves off to die so many owners do not get the chance.
@ChrisSurawy Yeah exactly so that's a good thing :) And the fact she was put down in her home & not the vet was kinda nice too, and now today that the selfishness has worn off, it feels good that shes out of pain. Sorry to see your cat acting like this in your video too, its not nice and hard for any owner to see their pet like this!
Thank you for posting this. My cat just had a seizure like this one. I, of course, am very worried. I am sorry to hear that Molly has passed away, though 15 is a good life for a cat. How long did she suffer from the seizures before she passed?
I've found the best thing is holding firmly but gently (watching out for nails and teeth) and calling their name to try to give them something they know to focus on, like asking a human questions about themselves, as they come out of trauma. Please be sure to check on the flea preventative you use, cheaper, non vet-sold brands are FAMOUS for causing this in cats... Ask anyone in the animal industry what *HARTZ* is still on the shelves... it's the same reason there is still fluoride in the water!
@jmolag Ensure there is nothing nearby by the cat can strike during the event and hurt itself. Things like sharp edges or near the top of stairs. Darken the lights (the strobe effect in the video is my rubbish camera failing at auto light balance, it wasn't really happening!). Crucially, when finished the vet said the animal is most likely temporarily blind and very frightened. A familiar voice and touch will calm the poor beastie.
My dear Cat Cookie had an epicleptic seizure when he was a kitten, I hope everyone whos listening doesn't encounter the same thing. I wish your cat well :D
Thank you my cat has been having seizures for awhile and wasn't sure what it was. What are u doing for her is there anythng u can give her over the counter? Thanks
@treefree50 Hello, My cat had an overactive Thyroid which there are 3 treatments for; Surgery to reduce the size, radiation to reduce the function, pills to keep it in check. I opted for a pill a day wrapped in tuna, the sensible choice to me. I don't think it was related to seizures, my vet indicated it was common in older cats.
@treefree50 Arent you supposed to grab them and hold their head? so they dont smack it? I have 3 cats myself and would like to know, just in case one of mine have a seizure
@Silvawolf100 The way I understand it is there is nothing you can do to stop the event. Ensure there is nothing nearby the cat can strike during the event or fall off and hurt itself. Darken the lights (the strobe effect in the video is my rubbish camera failing at auto light balance, it wasn't really happening!). Crucially, when finished the vet said the animal is most likely temporarily blind and very frightened. A familiar voice and touch will calm the poor beastie.
This was informative for me, as my cat just had the same seizures (but was moving all over the room while it was occuring ...and she's also partially blind ALREADY). So, it was good to read the comments, etc and I didn't think you were doing anything wrong filming the event. I am taking my cat to the vet today. I had my dog put to sleep a week ago due to cancer, and now my cat is sick, but I'm hoping she'll pull through. When it rains, it pours.
@SS421982 thanks for the film on your cat having a seizure. It was very informative for us because our cat just had a seizure and we were not sure what was happening with her. thank you again
okay this doesnt make sense sitting there with ur camera taping a cat having a seizure.... help it? if u were having a seizure want me to just tape you? nah i think i'll just keep taping D:<
My cat used to have one or two seizures a day, every day of the week. We took her to the vet and now she's on medication for it. Hasn't had a seizure in about a year. It took a while for the seizures to stop (about two weeks before they stopped completely) but it was almost an immediate improvement. We delayed taking her to the vet because we thought that she might have to be put down, but nope! There is medication for it. Oh, and you're not supposed to "clear the airways" if a human has a fit.
@Arbiter347 Thank you for the correction, as I said I am no expert and it is important to look these things up from a proper source. I'm glad your moggy is able to enjoy life once more. Alas, mine died from other conditions since then.
@amarige25 Unfortunately there is little you can do other than to make sure they do not hurt themselves by bashing things as they fit. In humans there is the check for a clear airway or give them something to bite down on, but please look these up in the proper medical journals before attempting any procedure! Lights should be low and comfort the animal afterwards as temporary blindness and terror is likely. In short, you did nothing wrong.
I assume a seizure is the same for cats and for humans, don't try and hold them down as it will only hurt them and yourself, I thought most people knew that?! It's very sad to watch especially because they don't know what is happening to them. Hopefully your video will help other cats too, Molly was lucky to have caring owners!
My kitten, Willow, had a seizure about 7 months ago. I was away at job corp and my mom calls saying my kitten died. Says Willow died in her arms on the way to the vet. Nothing could have been done. In my greiving process for my little kitten, i looked up a possible reason, and found one. Harts flea and tick. dont buy it! read online, your cat might die from it! i found out too late but its not too late for others. RIP willow. im sure your climbing curtains and tearing up leathercouches in heaven
Whats so sad is I'm 13 and I have to watch my 16 year old cat fit all the time. Even though this isn't my cat, it has still made me cry to think that this cat is loosing brain cells every second it fits, and there is nothing you can do about it.. :'(
My own cat passed away this last October (She was 13). She was having a kind of fit for a second time, but it was not NEARLY as violent as the one the cat in this video is having. It more so looked like she was dreaming, her paws and legs twitching ever so slightly. She did, however, drool and urinate.
The second time this happened she took a few breaths and then died (I saw it happen). Is it possible for a seizure to kill a cat? Or do you think it was something else?
@Jonnnable Thank you for that! Unfortunately the cat has passed away at the grand old age of 15, we think in her sleep. It was after a lifetime of prowling at night, playing with toys, feeding and petting from human slaves and sleeping. Sounds like a better life than most humans have.
@ChrisSurawy Hey, sorry about your cat. Sounds like she had a great life. My cat had a seizure this AM. I wish I had seen your vid before. It really took me by surprise. Anyway, full workup at the vet and he's it pretty good shape for an old guy.
My other cats watched as it happened and seemed very concerned about their friend. The red one has been following him around all day and sitting beside him.
@96161445 Do not worry, Molly was well cared for and she died peacefully in her sleep at the grand old age of 15 (well, we think 15, she was an abandoned kitty when we got her from the Cat's Protection League 13 years ago and they estimated her age at 2 years back then).
@gibbsboroturtle What about people who post horrible comments about strangers? If you took the time to read the comments rather than just look at pictures then you would not be so ignorant.
there is nothing you can do when an animal or a person is having a seizure...what did you want him to do pin the cat down??? here's an idea for you...READ A BOOK! This person was simply educating others on what a feline seizure can look like. if you were so ignorant you might realize how youtube is mainly used these days for EDUCATION. You can learn about anything on youtube these days...if you're too ignorant to realize how education works, maybe you should delete your account
my cat started having seizures in december.. we only got half of the blood results back ._. we'll get the other half on monday. i pray for her. it's so scary to witness my baby being calm then her eyes go wild and she darts across the house and collapses and goes into a fit like this one D:
My cat does the same thing. Thanks for posting this video so I could show that to the Vet. It was very difficult and sad moment for me to see my cat in this situation. Thank you again.
@TheBCDExprnc Hi. Unfortunately the cat is deceased now, she was 15 years old and not sure what she died of. I cannot recall how hungry she was afterwards, I do remember she used to lie down for a little while and then go for a walk.
@LESIMS2100 As I have said several times to other people who don't read all of the comments, I know it looks like there is a flashing light but there wasn't one in reality. My low quality video camera was continually adjusting exposure due to a constant low light level which makes it look like on the video there was changing light. I wasn't strobing the poor animal, honest!
My cat has fits after she was poisoned with apparently ecstasy, well something with high salt content. She has been effected for two years and she's only 6 years old. It is so sad to see isn't it. But thankfully we have tablets to give her which helps a lot. Just awful.
Although its not nice to see i found this video really helpful and in some way comforting to know that other cats suffer the same as my cat Hendrix. At one point we though that putting the cat down would be best for him bust since seeing this and finding out more info from the internet and reserching cat epilepsy im confident my cat can lead a normal and healthy life even with the seizures. My vet has still to diagnose Hendrix but im sure its epilepsy. Thanks for the info xx
why cant some people take this serious. I for one was crying cause I use to have seizures my self and seeing a poor creature go through this is not funny whats so ever. Those of you who find it funny how would you like it if a loved one or yourself went through that I bet it wouldnt be funny then
That cat is just having a exciting dream, my neighbors dog sleeps runs sometimes when he is dreaming, just slap the cat on the backside and head a few times to wake him up until he stops running and wakes up
My vet said the cat might have feline hyperesthesia syndrome, but when she goes into seizure, she looks like your cat. Do you know what causes the seizure and how does your vet treat her? What meds is she prescribed?
Thanks for posting this video, my two year old cat, had her first seizure last night, and it scared the crap out of me, it's re-assuring to know, that there are other cats suffering with the same problem, and that they are doing ok, and its good to know what happens during a seizure cause at the time, I hadn't a clue what was happening. Thanks.
I want to thank you for posting this video. My 18 yo cat had his first seizure about three days ago. I already knew what to do but it was still shocking to see it in person. After he recovered, I found your video and sent it to the vet since Molly's seizure was identical to my cat's seizure in every way except duration. He is doing better now sans medications but we know that it could happen again without warning. Thank you so much for filming Molly so others can use it to learn.
@hamsteradorable Our cat had two other seizures a week apart for each other since posing the above comment. The vet did diagnose him w/ idiopathic tonic-clonic seizures. Bloodwork, heart, neuro exam was perfect so it was a diagnosis by exclusion. It's possible he has a meningioma which is very common in older cats, but the MRI & spinal tap are too expensive and invasive for his age. He's is now on phenobarbital and responding beautifully. Hasn't had a seizure since his last one december 24th.
I volunteer at an animal shelter and a cat today had a seizure... It's a 5-month old cutie... We had put her together with another small kitty in a cage so they can have company... So all of a sudden I see this cat acting irrationally. I ran to the front desk because I didn't know what to do, and luckily there was the vet and she came in and said the kitty was having a seizure... The vet picked her up and took her to the med room... That was truly sad to watch.
Thank you for sharing. My 17 years old diabetic and CRF cat had a seizure last night for the first time. It really scared a hell out of me. Just like your Molly, mine recovered 10 minutes later, and I took her to the vet in the morning. Only if I see you video before.... How often does he get a seizure?
As I have said in reply to previous comments, I know it looks like there is a flashing light but there wasn't one in reality. My low quality video camera was continually adjusting exposure due to a constant low light level which makes it look like on the video there was changing light. I wasn't strobing the poor animal, honest!
Poor little thing...Well my cat is even worst. She is going from one room to bathroom and completely can't control herself. She is on phenebarbital tablets. Seizures are so, so sad to watch. It hurts us and our cats. :( But we can't help it too much unfortunately
what I would like to know is whats up with the flashing lights there that is known to CAUSE epileptic seizures? SERIOUSLY? I am offended....I went looking for help for what is happening to my cat, and I see your light flashing up and down. NOT COOL.
As I have said in reply to previous comments, I know it looks like there is a flashing light but there wasn't one in reality. My low quality video camera was continually adjusting exposure due to a constant low light level which makes it look like on the video there was changing light. I wasn't strobing the poor animal, honest!
@ChrisSurawy I have the same problem with mine when trying to catch my sibs sugar glider having these.. It sent the WRONG impression, seriously..
However I would like to know why you didn't put a towel under it's head, or confine it's body in some way to aid from hurting it's self during this episode, along with why no cardboard or cloth was in it's mouth to stop from biting it's tongue.. And lastly, is this animal on medication?
@StopTheMurder Interesting comments and questions. Yes, the animal is on medication and I followed advice from the vet precisely. I have also read advice that confining an animal or human having a seizure is more likely to cause injuries such as bruising and pulled muscles. I was also given advice that objects placed in the mouth to prevent biting injuries could also be counter productive. I am no expert so I followed my vet's advice.
Aww.. A stray epileptic kitten (a few months old probably) showed up on my porch the other day. Somebody probably dumped him after realizing he had seizures :( Hopefully nothing was seriously wrong with him.. we didn't have the money to take him to a vet ourselves.. and we couldn't keep any more cats so we took him to a no-kill shelter where they can take care of him and hopefully find him a good home.
Thank you for posting this video. I found it helpful after waking up to my cat having her first seizure in the middle night. I wasn't sure exactly what was wrong with her. Being able to compare your video and it's despription to what she had just gone through, I was able to pinpoint what had happened to her, as well as be assured that she would be okay until I could get her to the vet during bussiness hours
@kate1269 Thank you so much for your comments, my intention was to educate and help not to provide some form of sick entertainment as some commentors have suggested. I am very pleased I helped you and best wishes.
The first time she did this, I did. Even though it was 30 mins before Vet opening times, I rushed in an out-of-hours call which cost near two hundred pounds in all. The vet told me what it was and what to do so I felt comfortable with dealing with these events myself.
I know it looks like there is a flashing light but there wasn't one in reality. My low quality video camera was continually adjusting exposure due to a constant low light level which makes it look like on the video there was changing light. I wasn't strobing the poor animal, honest!
I was crying watching this video ! seen this cat any other suffer its sad . is he or she on any meds to control these seizures. I my self have Seizure and i hate them they wear you out both mental and phically. 'I was in a head on crash and the seat bleat did not hold be back and my head with up into the windsheild and the airbag did nothing for me. but ever since i have seizures so i feel for the cat i really do
My own cat had this type of seizure, which was caused by pyrethrone toxicity. She had began twitching hours before and I didn't know that these little seizures led up to a bigger one but then I saw her violently thrashing around in one of my baskets. It was very scary. She never had any problems like this before. But she was treated for this and now she is doing perfectly fine.
thanks so much for the description my cat started having a fit so i ran into my mums room to get her and my cat was on my bed and she actually bit down on my bed dovey really hard to stop her self from having he seizure, it made me really sad =[ she was also blind for a few seconds but was tottally fine after about 10-20 mins
yesterday my cat had a seizure. She started twiching and then she fell over and hers eyes rolled back in her head. When i lifted up her head she went lifeless like she didn't have any bones. I was so scared i thought she just died because i didn't know what happened. Then she blinked and she was ok. It was weird and scary, and did you know after they have them they didn't know what happend?
My cat has seizures like that too. She had one last night e... It's hard to see her like that, the first time I thought she was simply dieing , but that's now been more than a year ago. You should try to keep track of time + date of these seizures and take her to a vet because it does not necessaryly be genetical and it may be possible to cure her. My cat only seems to have these seizures at the end of winter/beginning of spring, her blood was checked but nothing found :-(
An interesting observation. In reality it wasn't flashing at all which is why I never noticed it before on the film. I think it must be my camera trying and failing to adjust to the poor light conditions.
i have a cat who had a seizure for about 26-27 hours so the night she started the seizure we prayed to the saint of animals and the next morning we woke up she was walking around in the cage
Both my cats are having them. 1 is 22 and has had them for 4 years due to repetitive clicking sounds, but has now gone deaf so no longer has them, but my other is 18 and started earlier this month and is thought 2 be a tumor on the brain, she's being put down tomorrow. :(

@jmolag Ensure there is nothing nearby by the cat can strike during the event and hurt itself. Things like sharp edges or near the top of stairs. @96161445 Do not worry, Molly was well cared for and she died peacefully in her sleep at the grand old age of 15 (well, we think 15, she was an abandoned kitty when we got her from the Cat's Protection League 13 years ago and they estimated her age at 2 years back then).

there is nothing you can do when an animal or a person is having a seizure...what did you want him to do pin the cat down??? here's an idea for you...READ A BOOK! This person was simply educating others on what a feline seizure can look like. if you were so ignorant you might realize how youtube is mainly used these days for EDUCATION. You can learn about anything on youtube these days...if you're too ignorant to realize how education works, maybe you should delete your account

@gibbsboroturtle you cant stop something from having a seizure, its the worst thing you can do, you have 2 let it play out. then get help.

@ChrisSurawy What's she like afterwards in terms of hunger? And how old is she? My cat keeps having fits like these, though not for as long :(
TheBCDExprnc 1 year ago
@TheBCDExprnc Hi. Unfortunately the cat is deceased now, she was 15 years old and not sure what she died of. I cannot recall how hungry she was afterwards, I do remember she used to lie down for a little while and then go for a walk.

My vet said the cat might have feline hyperesthesia syndrome, but when she goes into seizure, she looks like your cat. Do you know what causes the seizure and how does your vet treat her? What meds is she prescribed?
FaryadeRahayi 1 year ago

Thank you so much for filming Molly so others can use it to learn.

hamsteradorable 1 year ago

StopTheMurder 1 year ago
@StopTheMurder Interesting comments and questions. Yes, the animal is on medication and I followed advice from the vet precisely. I have also read advice that confining an animal or human having a seizure is more likely to cause injuries such as bruising and pulled muscles. I was also given advice that objects placed in the mouth to prevent biting injuries could also be counter productive. I am no expert so I followed my vet's advice.
ChrisSurawy 1 year ago

Being able to compare your video and it's despription to what she had just gone through, I was able to pinpoint what had happened to her, as well as be assured that she would be okay until I could get her to the vet during bussiness hours

you are crude to animals you wouldnt rush it to the doc
ciara2996 1 year ago
@ciara2996
The first time she did this, I did. Even though it was 30 mins before Vet opening times, I rushed in an out-of-hours call which cost near two hundred pounds in all. The vet told me what it was and what to do so I felt comfortable with dealing with these events myself.
ChrisSurawy 1 year ago
I agree with the flashing lights comment.
If it's similar to human epalepsy then surely it's quite harsh to put flashing lights on it?

I was crying watching this video ! seen this cat any other suffer its sad . is he or she on any meds to control these seizures. I my self have Seizure and i hate them they wear you out both mental and phically. 'I was in a head on crash and the seat bleat did not hold be back and my head with up into the windsheild and the airbag did nothing for me. but ever since i have seizures so i feel for the cat i really do
mattlovesall 1 year ago
Sorry to hear that you have a similar condition. The cat is on meds, yes.
ChrisSurawy 1 year ago

It was weird and scary, and did you know after they have them they didn't know what happend?
bluesea880 1 year ago
My cat has seizures like that too. She had one last night e... It's hard to see her like that, the first time I thought she was simply dieing , but that's now been more than a year ago. You should try to keep track of time + date of these seizures and take her to a vet because it does not necessaryly be genetical and it may be possible to cure her. My cat only seems to have these seizures at the end of winter/beginning of spring, her blood was checked but nothing found :-(

She is a rescued cat but best guess is 15 years old - we have had her for 13 of those years.
ChrisSurawy 1 year ago
Why was the light flashing? Wouldn't that be a trigger of fit?
clairejgray 2 years ago
An interesting observation. In reality it wasn't flashing at all which is why I never noticed it before on the film. I think it must be my camera trying and failing to adjust to the poor light conditions.
