  • You can tell when someone is white. Somewhere in their statement they will say all or most black people. Yeah, many have bought into the lie (propaganda) spread by a white led society. Something we all need to understand. When you say black people, that statement is comprised of two words. One of those words being people. As a whole black people continue to get stronger. Just look at their (republicans) new attacks on the poor. It is and always has been pointed at black people. Watch them fail.

  • Back in the 80s when reagonomics came into play..they were spot on!

  • word to cameo!!

  • So true in this society!

  • The music to this song is absolutely incredible. I Love It!

  • i love her ripped jeans...

  • This and "Pretty Girls" were the jams from this CD! Flordida A&M 89! Please put the "Pretty Girls" Video on VEVO!

  • Against All Odds

  • Watching vids like these you can sort of appreciate the fight the black man undertook for generalized equality in a predominantly white-controlled society. Then you have to laugh as years later most of them traded that hard-won quasi-equality for guns, drugs and reputations as thugs/career criminals. Have to wonder which is worse. Being oppressed/undermined by society for being an inferior race or being oppressed/undermined by society for being generally despicable people?

  • Does anyone know the bass player? Did they change up on their bass player over time?

  • @purpulhaze Not sure dude but if ya find the answer pass it on please, Thanks 8)

  • @purpulhaze The bass player is Aaron Mills who has been with the group since 1979; although Cameo did employ have another bad ass bass player named Mike Burnett who came aboard in 1982 but passed away a few years ago.

  • I like old school

  • @kornelious1 lol

  • 2PAC SAMPLED THIS ON MAKAVELI ALBUM TRACK AGAINST ALL ODDS PROPS TO BOTH ARTISTS BOTH SONGS ARE GREAT

  • As much as I love cameo it's not just about the skin your in, it can be creed, nationality, orientation and general beliefs. As long as there is a group that hates you with a passion there will always be trouble.

  • @CC856 I agree but this song was more relevant at the time it was released. Not to mention the the era the members grew up in.

  • @purpulhaze I'd love to argue but to be honest not a lot has changed since then, the same old prejudice still exists, the world is alot harder to change than a song unfortunately 8( but lets keep our spirits high for the future 8)

  • @CC856 To true mate, but on the bright side, most of us are strong enough to follow our own beliefs,we can stand up to the negativity of others with our own strength and belief 8)

  • This socially conscious 80's R&B/funk song is their most overlooked one as a band, and one that I always appreciated from them. Sure, they could jam your socks off, with a funk laced dance track, or have you turn out the lights, with a mellow slow jam, but this song/video showed that they were aware of the ongoing issues that African Americans face in society, then and now, and I'm sure they weren't exempt from some of the same issues themselves, that's why I think they did this timeless song...

  • J'adooore ce morceau même si j'suis pas trop fan du clip!!!

  • Real funk with a conscience to wake up the ears of closed minds! Nuff respect to Cameo!

  • Great Band....always ahead of their time for those that "DON'T" know....and all the members are good enough musicians to be on their as well....shame groups like this don't exist anymore....now everyone video and song is the same....some young lame rapper, pants down, flashing fool's gold, thousands of women grinding, cars, starter caps and jackets, no themes, storylines or anything.....I missed Cameo's creativity.

  • Its just a really bad bad pop band..lol..but i like word up..that i think was an awesome song.

  • @KnightMStarr ....First of all...Cameo is not a "POP" Band....they are a very "GOOD" band! You must be one of those bandwagoners that jumped on during the WORD UP era. This group has been recording since 1976...and they recorded, funk, jazz, blues, rock, and even tackled some raggae flavored tunes...checkout their songs..."Talkin out the Side of Your Neck, I've Got your Image, She's Strange, In The Night, Little Boys and Dangerous Toys, etc"....you will be so amazed at how versatile they are.

  • @thighseye

Hi, Ur right i did jump on during the word up ear..ok..im checking out the other songs..i just dont think its my taste...

  • @thighseye

Ur right ..im right now listening to ..ive got your image..its not really my taste..but its a good song...i kind of like it..

  • Those other songs..are indeed really nice..

  • Cameo!! Wow just wow. Probably the baddest funkiest band of their time. Always tight tight music. They sure do not make music like yesterday. Our black artist's (?) have sold out to the white man for the almighty dollar.

  • Check out howard university showtime band playing this song and vote for us for the honda battle of the bands!!!!

  • Deepness...

  • Tight song bass line is sick definitely one of my favorites since I'm in Showtime Marching band and we play it all the time. Vote for us on Honda!!1

  • Tight song bass line is sick definitely one of my favorites since I'm in Showtime Marching band and we play it all the time. Vote for us on Honda

  • uuuuuuuhh....Classic

  • I love CAMEO!! Born in the 1980's nuff said!

  • Larry Blackmon is too deep for a lot of people.

  • Love this song. Just had to buy it on ITunes.... Thanks for posting.

  • I know a lot of you people dont understand this song, but this song is so deep you better let your parents explain it to you. If you are KKK no explanation needed

  • This song would get no play on MTV or BET or the mainstream radio stations today as it's too critical thinking & Corporations want to dumb us down via music not enlighten us while taking our money, mind & soul via said entertainment (come into, hold possess, a state of being) & entertainers (idols, icons, stars, celebrities, role models).

  • @IceManLikeGervin It’s time to view the world in a new way; our collective efforts can be played out in music. It can also be commercially successful. Other people aren’t forced feeding garbage down other throats, we just insist on consuming it. I remember this song very well and enjoyed it! There needs to be action and less talk with more discipline. It’s not a deep song please, its topical!!!

  • @1879gym

Media ='s Medium ='s Hypnotizing Minds

This song is much deeper & more currently relative than your post, buddy.

  • Comment removed

  • Respond to this video... What’s deep about racism? Or the effect that it has on either parties mind, or the double standard that exist because of that ignorance??? It’s a kool song and I like it, but the real question worthy of discussion is what are you going to do about it?

On second thought, perhaps it’s very deep for you! I stand corrected

  • 3:32 - 3:42 is cool (the instrumental part) love that lol

  • boy that was a great song with horn lines

  • We can get along together peacefully. I love Black people man. I wish peace and love to everybody

  • VEVO SUX ASS

  • Lyric's are still prevalent to this day!!!!

  • @TheBlkAlchemist Sadly so. From my experience it does vary from town to town. In Atlanta not as much but an hour away for sure. In Atlanta it could be an advantage to be black if you seek government employment. Private industry, the big money is still calling the shots in most situations. There the only color that matters is GREEN

  • loved the 80's....deep song..

  • Real shit BIG BABY!!!

  • A deep message and to the funkiest of funk, doesn't get any better!

  • Makaveli - Against all odds

  • The horns & Lyrics are epic in this song!

  • In a way Cameo did a 180. This was one serious song. America wasn't ready for this. I love this song music is not all fun and dance. The message is in the music.

  • @Renagade70 If you remember the movie Mississippi Burning with Jean Hackman this song came out the same time as that movie in 1988.

  • this song needs to be out right now.its so true

  • @aduck1340 Amen to that!!

  • What a message. Cameo God Bless

  • GOTTA LOVE CAMEO !!!!!

  • Great song, hadn't heard it for years. Thanks.

  • These brothers were bad asses, to 15th POWER. The music in this video, ranks right up there with JB'S from back in the day. Horns, Bass, drums, everthing just down right FUUUUNK-A!!!! Larry I'm sending out an S.O.S....where is Cameo. Somebody Help me. If you hapen to have the CD. The ending was played out at the end with music bumping to that bad ass beat they're playing.

  • I Love This Song! Especially when the Band plays It! (SUBR)

  • This video reminds me of my college days at MVSU !

  • c'mon now, cameo...this like the same exact bass line as candy....U can tell this joint was trying to piggyback off the Black power movement popularized by groups like Public Enemy and Jungle Brothers

  • in love with this song

  • Something for the ages that we as African Americans can Flaunt and be beautiful and yet Funky Doing What We Do.

  • wow love this song never head this an I'm a 60's baby but never heard this until SU PLAY IT AN THEY DID

  • Cameo makes VEVO. Congrats

  • the song has a good deep meaning to it but the video says something else!!!

  • @dee123422: HA HA HA HA !!! You're right. HA HA HA HA ! Cameo is the shit (no pun intended), but the guy that edited this video back in the day must have been high & didn't realize he left that extra second of footage in there. I haven't seen a skidmark like that since the Indy 500 :-) I still dig the shit (again, no pun intended) outta this song.

  • G A Y ....

  • @kornelious1 I'm so sorry that "GAY" was all you got from this video YOUNGIN!!! As deep as the message is in the video, & remembering how futuristic this song was (recorded in 88), your feeble mind can't possibly wrap itself around the concept. Why dont you go watch a Justin Bieber video or something tiger....You're in the wrong lane

  • @Danexman AMEN

  • @Danexman I agree 100% - as i said below, I was born in the 1980s and LOVE CAMEO! <3

  • @jtorres851 You're well ahead of your years, and I wish more power to you. Spread the word to your peers and let them know what's up. We need more soldiers like you out there in the world today.

  • I love the skin you're in Larry. You are like perfect Chocolate - and I'd never get a toothache either.

  • Is it just me your does it look like the girl at 4:03 has a dodo stain lol

But i love the display of musically talent and you should look up SU Skin Im In

  • @dee123422 ...I don't believe that a 32 years old man would come on here and make a stupid ass comment like that. the girl in the video @ 4:03 have a dodo stain. yes mother fucker it's just you and you really such not ...Lol it's not manly like...freaking idiot get the fuck out of here!!!

  • i want his high top fade!!!!! it would take years to grow my hair that long

  • This is dat funk, they don't make it like this no more..never will again...!...This is definitely still one of my fav songs..EVER!

  • notice the size of these women....nice healthy regular sized women

thats what was normal 20+ years ago

dont think yall slick using this rationale though some of you hoes need to get on that treadmill real talk..you know you do...i mean people gonna kiss ur ass anyways cause niggas aim low but regardless its not healthy either. Stop eating

fried foods and eating after 6pm unless its a salad and get your big ass on a treadmill drink alot of water got damit try. enough is enough & 2 much.....

  • @DoomCity202, I'm a woman, and you're right about everything you said.

  • @HaukkuAmil it aint everyones fault though

its also some of ths shit they put in these foods that dont need 2b there

i buy wheat bread&read the label its hard 2find wheat bread without

high fructose corn syrup..now ask urself why the hell is that needed in

wheat bread&would u really miss it. Chinese carryouts in the hood are

the enemy that shit is garbage on purpose they hatin. Black womens

natural figure cannot be matched..theres some other shit in this food

cause we ALWAYS ate soul food.

  • @Doom City 202 If all processed foods were banned along with fast food restaurants we'd see a big difference in our society. Unfortunately, parents aren't cooking anymore, or even know to cook, and kids are being fed poison more than ever. I see people buying junk for their kids and not one time do they even glance at the label! It's bad enough we're genetically predisposed to certain illnesses from birth, but at some point we have to stop making excuses and start making better choices.

  • A big difference is our mothers grew up cooking but i was peepin these lil

kids the other day at the store it was a pack of like 6 of them and every

last one of them bought the same thing some kinda chips and a soda.

there was no way we could get away with that shit maybe sneak some

snacks at school but we werent living off that shit on a daily basis.

Times got rough out here and a lot fell apart and its evident.

  • @DoomCity202 I feel sorry for kids that don't get a homecooked meal everyday, because they will continue to eat that garbage, because that's all they know. And it's not their fault. Hopefully someone will come along and teach them better. I don't have kids, but it kills me to see kids making bad choices that I'm sure they learned at home. Only God knows what other bad choices they're making.

  • EXCELLANT CLIP !!!! bravo !!!! sylvain in France (PARIS)

  • 3:03 Sick Ass Bass!!!!!!!!!

  • Truly disturbing images in the beginning of this video :27 and y'all don't think that African Americans deserve reparations?!! That was the period that started the social economic injustices for people of color ! Nasty nasty America then because even the government was involved ! Yuck !!!

  • thats a sick baseline

  • wow i wish artist could start raping about real stuff

these days all u hear in a rape song is cars, money, and how much women

    a guy can get

  • @MelloTaylor in most cases, it's not the artists fault for spitting such crap. Check out Slum Village Tainted (second verse)

  • the bass on this is SICK! Cameo is truly one of the top 5 greatest funk bands EVER

  • Comment removed

  • @sda1225 yes the bass is off the chain, and the horn section is literally out of this world, the whole song was put together so tight it doesnt make since, this is one of if not my fav cameo songs period

  • this is great

  • omg this guy kutiman just did this great mix with Cameo

check it out it's called sue you

  • A lot of HBCU bands play this song...its a crowd favorite!!

  • STRONG GROOVE,GREAT HORNS,HEAVY BASS AS ALWAYS,SCARY SOUNDING SIZERS&ABOVE ALL A GREAT MESSAGE FOR ALL OF US.

  • It's one of cameo's best records.

  • I've been a Cameo fan from day1 of there introduction and to this day this is 1 of the baddiest bands to ever do it!.. Video's like this makes me hate what this new generation is doing to the music scene today!!!

  • if you wore that kind of stuff nowadays you'll get picked at fah eva....

  • d-shot sampled this

  • I was just listening to my cameo cd and thought i'd look this track up on you tube, back and forth was my favourite but this beats it hands down. Never knew they done a video, very impressed and got the message across without being too in your face.

  • @rochstan123 so nice to hear some one enjoy the music without needing to been spoonfed a video to make sense of the song. you sir have some class 8-)

  • dig the hornlines!

  • I remember this video being in heavy rotation on BET back in the day. Cameo is such an underrated band. BET, please honor this group with a lifetime achievement award. They so deserve it.

  • Where would HBCU bands be without this group?! LOL

  • CAMEO WAS JUST TOO SEXY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • My favorite part is the horns coming on at 3:32....Get's me every time!!

  • also as a cameo fan i have never seen this video ,and i also believe this song / video was also downplayed, its a shame cause iam sure this tune was just based on a view of things as they were, not political views , as you can see there are all races in this video and not a direct attack on no one , its just the world we are in ,but as long as there are music fans like us music will always be fun, that takes us away from the politics and censorship shit wee get fed , peace to all

  • band staples... YES YES D:!

  • This has to be played turned way up. Nice.

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks to my son I have rediscovered Cameo. I realize now there is no way I could have truly respected their work when I was a kid. This song is truly the -ish! "it is immoral or a sin if it is according to the skin I'm in~ Cameo

  • Great song.

  • bringing back memories (only 22 years ago)

  • This has been my jam forever! Never seen the video til now. Censorship is the word and it's in full effect now. Don't believe anything you see in the corporate media. Excellent song and video. Great post!!!

  • @jazzman551

You have the most badass band instructor EVER, then.

  • Comment removed

  • Larry Blackman: So much character going on. High top fade, big ol' eyes, beautiful skin. awkward dance steps and last but not least "the cod piece". Love it

  • these guys must have been/are fun to watch in concert..great song and very real.

  • A masterpiece !.! plain and simple if you cant get wit this 1 feel sorry foya ,one of the true super ol skool funk groups dammit man.

  • Great song-- Great Video.

  • VEVO SUCKS!!!!

  • this video doesnt wrk who's ever in charge need to fixx this i woul appreciate it thanks sheeeesh

  • I have to say as a cameo fan this is the first time ive seen this video. The message is so much more clearer and powerful with the video. Considering the political climate of the times I would be surprised if it was deliberately downplayed for air time

  • @RazerForce: Like you Razerforce i too was a big cameo fan back in the day and having listen to the song so many times this is the first time that i have seen the video, now putting the two together it make so much more sense, this is one of the song that was ahead of it's time. Great posting.

  • @RazerForce i'm the other way, listen to the music with no visuals and make ya own mind up ,im just a child of the times 8-), music speaks for itself, video is tv lol

  • @RazerForce i was jamin this when it came out this is cameo at there best

  • classic

  • This was and still is one of Cameo's best songs. It didn't recieve alot of air play but this is truly a classic jam for all seasons!

  • @trukloadentdj agreed

  • @trukloadentdj I agree. I found this song by accident years after the album was released. I immediately liked it and listened to it every day.
