I was lucky enough to be at this show. It was one of the best shows I had ever seen. It was right before "Freedom" came out, so, there were a lot of tunes played from that album that we had never heard before. Plus a bunch of tunes, like this one, that I hadn't heard since. They also did a version of "Crime in the City", with alternate lyrics, that clocked in at about 20 minutes.

It's worth finding a copy of the whole thing.

I was quite young when I went to see this show in San Diego, Ca. it was the first time that I heard this song live and I remember thinking: this is an awesome song! it lasted a long time and it was beautiful then and it's beautiful now. Thank you Neil.

Genius writing,,,He played Jones beach years back during the bluenotes tour and the show was off to kind of a slow start. He was trying the get the crowd on board, and like 5 songs into the show he pulls this song out. It was an 18 minute passionate lecture as to where we were as a country at the time... The crowd blasted out of their seats when the song was over and the night was amazing. Download the lyrics and read them . . . it is pure genius writing. One of the best shows ever..

You're right about his trouble getting the crowd started. I'm kind of surprised, watching this video now, about how enthusiastic the crowd is -which is not how I remembered it at all. I remember the set being about 90% new material, which did not go over well with the people hoping to hear "Heart of Gold". But the new material was so freaking good, that people dug it anyway.

I think Jones Beach might have been the night after this -but I could be wrong.

Critics might not have known it by listening to This Note's for You (which was decent but not great, still stood out compared to some of his other 80s records) but Neil had regained his touch that was fading since Rust Never Sleeps (was always there but he never tapped into it fully until Freedom although Life in 87 was the first sign of life scuse the pun). If they saw his tour with the Bluenotes and renditions of "Ordinary People" they'd see greatness again. My fave set of lyrics from Neil.

The original album, Chrome Dreams, was supposed to be released back in 1977, but never got produced.

I am not sure wether this song should had been on the record back then, but it definately was on the setlist at some concerts in the early nineties, as far as I can remember.

This song is one of his better songs, but I still prefer the version on the album Chrome Dreams II. But then again; ANY song from this genious is delicious.
