  • THERE IS NO RIGHT WAY TO PUT ON A CHOKE COLLAR. CHOKE COLLARS ARE CRUEL AND MEAN AND ARE USED FOR TRADITION METHODS OF TRAINING INVOLVING PHYSICAL PUNISHMENT, THIS ONLY MAKES THE DOG FEAR YOU OR CREATES AGGRESSION PROBLEMS. ANOTHER BAD METHOD OF TRAINING IS USING A PRONG COLLAR. PLEASE USE NORMAL NYLON OR LEATHER COLLARS. IF YOU WANT TO HELP YOUR DOG BECOME A HAPPY CANINE WITHOUT THE USE OF PHYSICAL OR MENTAL INTIMIDATION OR PUNISHMENT, CHECK OUT THE CHANNELS: KIKOPUP, TAB289, AND ZAKGEORGE.

  • @josski32 used correctly slip/choke, prong collars (tools) can be effective in gaining the dog's focus, it is up to you to provide consistent positive training once you've gotten dog's attention .. it is not used for punishment, if your dog is choking, you're doing it very wrong .. consult a professional trainer before attempting the use of these .. posting your entire comment in caps only served to annoy me, i'd never check out your channels simply because you're obnoxious, rude, uneducated

  • thank you so much i put it on wrong and i was wondering why it wouldnt loosen

  • The proper way to use a choke chain is to throw it away. I used one for about fifteen minutes with a little dog that was not yet trained. Some other dogs showed up suddenly about 100 feet away. Poor little guy lunged and hurt his neck. Vet said no damage, but he hacked for over a week.

Now the dog is perfectly behaved on leash. I used a regular collar, and I never once tugged on it. In fact, I never as much as scolded him with a "No." Positive methods work! Check out kikopup on youtube.

  • @JiveDadson " A little dog that was not yet trained " ... For starters you gave up after 15 minutes .... secondly this will not work on a large breed of dog the check/choke chain applied correctly will not cause what you have said anymore then a collar will if on the right way as it will release.... You do not know what you are talking about ... please do not try and explain anything to me I have read what you have said and that is all I need to go on.

  • @westeh The dog injured itself. And that is all I need to go on.

  • @JiveDadson...It's your handling skills

  • @westeh It is true that at the time I lacked handling skills. I have learned much in the intervening 13 months. With that particular dog, even the "threat" of a squirrel in the backyard should have ruled out the choker. Another thing I have learned is that punishment and "correction" not only have adverse side-effects, but they are utterly, completely unnecessary. Check out kikopup's youtube channel for videos of happy, obedient dogs of all sizes that have never even heard the word "no."

  • @JiveDadson .. Will do , thanks

  • @JiveDadson oh my goodness, please, i so pray you people will consult professionals before attempting to use training tools .. a choke chain should never be used on a small dog, what were you thinking?! .. please attend puppy obedience classes in your area to learn the proper way to train your dog as all dogs are different .. do not take these tools and use them on your own! .. it's not the tool that's bad, it's ignorance

  • at 0:29 you said it's not made to choke? are u kidding me? put it on yourself pull hard enough as you would do to your pet and then tell me the results....

  • Thank you, Steve! While this may or may not work for us, it's great to finally find someone demonstrating how to put it on. When I put one on Koda I immediately knew something was wrong...but had no idea how it worked.

Hopefully the choker will work for us, I'm not going to be popping or tugging on it and will be using tons of positive reinforcement. He's a smart boy, the choker should help stop me from being drug to Timbuktu soon.

  • @xTashaBaybe - The definition of punishment is the addition of something that stops a behavior. So, by definition, a choke collar correction is a punishment. I'm not in the habit of correcting my dogs by using physical force. I've established a training protocol in which they know that if they exhibit the correct behavior, it will be marked and then rewarded. I do occasionally use a "no reward marker" such as "oops" to tell them that the choice was incorrect and they will receive no reward.

  • Rarely does this action stop a dog pulling. If it does, why are handlers to be seen constantly "jerking" the choke chain?

  • @MsLabMom Because you have to GIVE the correction in order for the dog to stop pulling, duh.

  • Dogs are only as smart as the owners.

  • The slip collar "choke chain" doesn't hurt the dog if used correctly. It just pinches the bracheal nerve. It doesn't choke. If you have ever had an obstinant dog that will pull and pull on a collar and leash untill it is coughing and spitting you would know sometimes a choke chain is a much safer option. A lot of the harnesses to stop a dog from pulling are more dangerous, because they work by cinching the dogs waist, if a dog bolts the harness can cause severe internal damage instantly.

  • The correct way to put on a choke chain is to put it IN the garbage. Instead of using a correction collar, TEACH your dog not to pull. Then you don't need a choke chain.

"There is not a shred of doubt in my mind -- I would much rather have cookies in my jacket pockets than a chain around my dog's neck." -- Pat Miller

  • @musicofnote1 "TEACH your dog not to pull without it" how are you going to teach it not to pull with a regular buckle collar? Sure, if your dog is food motivated you could bring a few treats on a walk with you to get him to focus on the heel but what about dogs that arent food motivated? How would I teach my Shih Tzu not to lunge when he sees squirrels and cats ourside? It's called PREY DRIVE, and he could care less for cookies and bisquits when theres cats and squirrels around.

  • @xTashaBaybe - Have you not heard of Turid Rugaas? How do you think SHE does it? Have you not heard of Ian Dunbar? how do you think HE does it? My dog is a high drive dog-reactive Flat-Coated Retriever. I TAUGHT her focus. I TAUGHT her the Leslie McDevitt "look at me" game. She's never had a collar on, but rather a harness and does not pull, because I taught her. I didn't teach her NOT to pull. I taught how to walk without pulling. youtube(dot)com / watch?v=9MOCZR_eWBY

  • @musicofnote1 That dog in the video was TAUGHT the heel command. But if you take an un-trained dog, and put it in a harness, its natural instincts will leave it to PULL the leash much more than it would with a choke, prong, or a plain ol' buckle collar. You did not state HOW to train the heel command with a plain collar. That dog in the video is already trained.

  • @xTashaBaybe Watch this: watch?v=sFgtqgiAKoQ It shows how to teach a dog to walk with a loose leash without jerking it around. I worked daily for two months using the jerking method taught by a different "amazing" dog training man on youtube. Not only was I getting nowhere, but I felt lousy about it. I imagine my doggies were losing their patience with me too. Using the method in the kikopup video, I saw positive results in FIVE MINUTES. Now they are almost perfect on-leash, and HAPPY!

  • @JiveDadson i LOVE kikopup :)

  • The problem with choke chains is that, they are virtually ineffective on pulling dogs, which is why most newbies want to use them and the prong collars. Mostly, they jerk on the collars, or pull them, which just engages the dog's opposition reflex. I agree with the comment from the person who said the best way to use a choke collar is to chuck it - right into the nearest trash can. We now have much more humane management tools. Oh, and all it takes to train heel is a clicker and some treats.

  • @sequoyahbean "A clicker and some treats"? What about dogs, like MY Shih Tzu, who are not food motivated? I think what YOU'RE forgetting is that not all dogs learn with TREATS, and dogs need CORRECTIONS.

Maybe the choke chain isn't for you, and I respect that, but seriously stop being so biast if you never tried a choke chain and don't know how it works.

  • @xTashaBaybe If your dog is not food motivated, she would starve. My guess is that she is anxious in the situation in which she is being trained, and that might require that you work in a less distracting environment at first. I've been a trainer for many years, and understand how to use a choke chain, but long ago graduated to other methods, not just because I don't like the idea of punishing a dog physically, but positive training is more effective.

  • @sequoyahbean A choke chain doesn't punish a dog, it CORRECTS it. May I ask, how do YOU correct your dogs, since you're a "trainer"?

  • Thanks for the vid Steve!

  • The problem is if you punish a dog for agression you only stop its reaction (IE barking and lunging) you do not change the mental state he is in, also recent studies have showed if you use punishing methods you are actually more likely to have an agressive dog.

I (and many trainers and behaviourists) us counter and clasical conditioning to teach the dog a different behaviour and teach it to actually be calm and enjoy the thing it used to react to

  • There was a lawsuit against Cesar Millan where a dog died due to choke chain so his method can and does harm. If you have problems with your dog get a qualified behavioursit dont follow the methods of a TV celeb

  • hey fuckhead, the dog didnt die, he was just injured. I like how you take FACTS, and mix it in with bullshit.

  • The judge ruled against the plantiff, said he used the choke chain wrong and irresponsible. Cesar knows what he's doing.

  • These are the same studies that find pitbulls and rottweilers should be banned. The same studies that says once a dog bites someone or something he cannot be saved. Cesar has demonstrated time after time that this is not true

  • The only proper way to use a choke chain is to chuck it in the bin

  • so true. =)

  • @BenMcfuzzylugs why is that

  • There are far better ways to train a dog than to punish it, also choke chains can cause damage to the dogs neck and windpipe.

  • How would you deal with an aggressive dog, then? Or an obsessive one? Cesar Millan seems to use them with great success (and little harm to the dogs).

  • if done incorrectly

  • This guy is definitely a liberal. I'll put the farm on it.

  • pitbulls are nice and fun i have a blue nose pit he is very nice and never bites any1 its not the dog thats bad its the owner!!!
