  • why so fast?

  • I would shit myself if I was the conductor.

  • I love the brief melody at 4:35 and the huge chord shortly afterwards. Some of the most colourful music Ive ever heard.

  • I sense alot of individuality.. although good.

  • playing wasnt bad, but i get the feeling he's more interested in physical theatrics than musicality...plus the orchestra is a thousand feet away from him, that cant be easy to work with. sweaty conductor ftw

  • Good overall performance! piano flawless; good trumpet and orch;

keep in mind it's a live performance!

    Congrats to all

P.s. "maestro lost at 4:42" ?! look better

  • This trumpet player is raping the instrument

  • This is not good playing.....it's shit.....

  • all of you are idiots who think your all sooo amazingg and you know sooo muchh it was very good :) and the trumpet wasnt as interesting as the piano coz the piano part was more technicall take it from a grade 8 trumpet playeerrr (Y) and my friend whos got a diploma on the piano :) (Y) XD

  • You gotta love the enthusiasm of the pianist at 5:11!

  • Shimkus est intéressant, il est largement au-dessus, au-delà des prouesses techniques (ce qu'on montre trop souvent) ; on peut l'écouter encore et encore ...

  • The trumpet player wasn't as cool as the pianist.

  • The trumpet couldn't even keep the dynamic of the enthusiatic pianist although profressional obviously he didn't like that awesome piece.

  • The pianist is definitely not drunk!

    s911417 is a MORAN!!!!

  • tha a-hole wasn't drunk geez.

  • Not awful playing, just a very very odd interpretation. Yes, since we are so used ot hearing this piece the way it is generally played, to us, this sounds awful. Yes, there are pauses, accents, and other junk that the pianist could have done with out; his choice though.

Okay, yes, I have heard school orchestras and trumpet players way better than this; now their playing was awful.

Not disagreeing with you :) like you said, its your (our) opinion :)

  • Totally agree...Unfortunately the conductor has no clue about what is all about and therefore the soloist is free to destroy it. from 4:42 the conductor is lost, the 1st and 2nd violins are left to the mercy of God and the rit. of celli and basses is hilarious...

  • Mmm... I feel this is not aggressive and detailed enough. I think Argerich's OP35 is more aggressive and complex and I like it.

  • Oh how I LOVE this conductor !!!

increadible... one of the best I've ever seen...

  • Vinnitskaya

  • Love this performance! The trumpet player looks bored to me.

  • I think he was more just focused on the music. He's the other school from Shimkus, seems to be the more reserved type, just focus and nail everything, which he does.

  • I agree - these gimmicks do annoy at first, but definitely add something unique to the whole performance as an experience.

  • I don't know what anyone's talking about. Shimkus's showmanship and stage antics are brilliant. And yeah, the trumpeteer could be a little more enthusiastic, but he nails every note and dynamic. Just my opinion, though.

  • Even if he is "high on something," I don't think that compromises his obviously incredible performance.

Hell, drugs might've even enchanced it!

The point is, he's talented and whether or not he's in a mind-altered state is irrelevant to that fact.

  • I think he strayed too much from the tempo towards the end, including the cadenza

  • I actually like the pianist's theatrics and his performance is sufficient, but I agree the trumpet soloist leaves a lot to be desired, and the performance could be a shade faster, IMO.

  • The soud quality here is really unsufficient. The performance is correct in essentials but sometimes unconvincing (especially the trumpeter). The pianist seems good, more at ease than the other soloist.

  • I prefer the version of Vinnitskaya this year in the cmireb...

  • repulsed by the silly acting and gimmicks...

  • This interpretation really is pretty decent albeit somewhat odd to my ears. However, I've heard much worse on CD. In the two CDs I have of Shostakovich playing this (and the YouTube video) you'll hear Shostakovich rushing through this as fast as he can without any sense of drama or mystery. I enjoy the performances very much but I also like an interpretation that has personality and this one has it.

  • I don't know, maybe that was kind of the point when he wrote it. I'M NOT TRYING TO PROVOKE STUPID CONVERSATION OR SOUND SHALLOW. It is pretty well known that the composer was not only capable of whipping through the end of such a piece, but I would wonder if a more comical image is fully achieved the faster one get's? I would tend to argue that that is the case BUT I certainly do think that Shimkus played a veerry good performance of it. We can't all be Shostakovich, unfortuneately.

  • Great and absolutelly fascinating performance!Full of alive spirit of Shostakovich and his special sense of humor.Shimkus is immensely talanted and brilliant!!! Encomparable!

  • why? Defend your statement. It's pretty pathetic that you would come on these forums and lay out judgement and not give reasons why. Djordjen disagreed with this interpretation as well, but at least he/she described what bothered him/her about it. Contribute to the forum or stop taking up eyespace

  • Obscure gestures... Phrases missed.

  • Not a very sincere rendition: cheap, mechanical, brittle sound.

  • Excellent! He looks like he's having a hell of a good time playing. Freaking NAILED those cadenzas, too. Thanks for posting this!

  • That was brilliant. I also really love this piece, and the pianist's playing and interpretation were awesome! That nervous, so excited-I'm-going-to-jump- out-of-my-skin quality is just right. Definitely outplayed the orchestra and trumpeter.

  • I really love the way he plays Shostavich, the first concerto is also one of my favourite pieces
