ohh lovely picc lines,! ive had multiple piccs!! hate them so much!! i loved my port!!! until i got septic 4 times!! now the doc refuses the give me any central line. im like a human pin cushion.
@EvgeniaDuh Mine wasn't painful except when it was getting taken out. My veins spasmed and tightened on the picc, so the doctor had to pull it in and out to loosen it.
I have CF too and may have to have my first PICC line soon! Thank you for posting this video! I was so scared to have it done, but seeing your smiling face made it not seem so bad! Thank you! =)

I just got my PICC removed a couple of days ago. I went through hell getting mine. They tried three times on my right arm then on my left arm they ended up floating it into my neck the first time before finally getting it over to my heart. I hope your experience wasn't as painful. Hugs!
OMG....so many people in the room and talking....germs and more germs...contamination....OMG....BAD NURSE....BAD NURSE!!!! I hope pt didn't get an infection... so bad why would you post a voideo like this...maybe show what not to do....
OMG...just the nurse has a mask on....contamination....OMG...all those people in the room...and talking in the room....germs all over....I hope she did get an infrection...bad nurse....bad nurse.
They numbed me when I went to get put in. It wasn't so bad. it was gonna akward to have so many people in operating room though. It didn't hurt when I got it out too.
I got mine in December of 08. Got it out before my birthday in January of 09. It ruin Christmas and New Years for me last year. I got a infection in my foot. That why I got a picc.
No they inject some local freezing at the site where it's inserted. I have one right now. All i fealt while they was inserting it was a verry little pressure from it. You feel nothing at all!!!!
and in regards tp the description of this vid. Hey i'd rather be in the hospital to get one... instead being stuck in the hospital for 3 weeks like i was...
we use lidocaine intradermally when we insert it. when we pull them out, we don't mask. we just make sure we have the measurements, pull it out, and make sure we have an occlusive dressing over the site.
depends on the kind of picc. if you have a groshong(a type of picc), it has a black tip on the edge, and if you get the black tip, you know you have the whole line. some picc's you cut to fit, and then you must have measurements, in order to ensure you have the entire line. now, i've never seen a picc break in someone's arm, i have seen a nurse lose the guidewire, and the pt had to go to the cath lab to fish t out.
Thanks for the information! I'm actually not sure which type I have, although I do remember there being a notation on the white board in my hospital room of the line being a certain length. I had an infection from a compound fracture. Six surgeries down, one more to go on July 10th. What part of the country are you in?
Having that PICC Line placed in the vein does it hurt ? Also, does it feel weird having that in the vein? I mean can you feel it when you move your arm about?
forgot id like to know more about the port thing...if you wouldnt mind talking to me send me a private messsage and maby talk over msn or facebook or something Thanks
i am actually in hospitol right now to with a picc, this is prob who knows 3 or 4 a year for the last 5 years so i lost track how many, Crazy i hate dealing with CF and today i found out i might have Diabetes too now :(
Very poor care... I'm a PICC nurse, and in my experiences home health nurses know exactly how to screw up anything related to a PICC. More home health nurses send me Catheter related blood infections!
Good video to demonstrate how you should not clean the area around the insertion site. Once you clean the area of skin around, you must not touch clean it with swab you have touched the priphery. Sorri, but I need to point out this very mistake every one does.
Yeah that was my 8th picc or so now just last thursday I had a power port put in because my veins were getting to narrow and they were not letting piccs in.
i know how you felt. the worst is getting a picc line in. the tape and removal of it is a bastard but it may be soe after. just keep doing what your doing the recovery fro it ant o bad but the hole left in their is nasty
omg i had a picc line for two months :( (i had osteomiyelitis) its a bad bone infection and i was on vacation and i was in the hospital for three nights :(
This was the one of the worst examples of how to discontinue a picc. The slow pulling of the picc gives time for the vein to spasm and could have caused a stuck picc. To the person who posted this, thanks for sharing your experience. In the future, if you get a picc, just have them pull the picc quickly.
I am a special procedures tech. You never pull a picc line quickly! Slowly and a small amount at a time. And most important you need to know how long it is!
You are wrong. I am a PICC nurse at Vanderbilt and a vascular access specialist. You do NOT pull a picc slow. This will cause a vein to spasm. You are correct that you always need to check the length after a picc has been pulled. I realize that someone has trained you in this manner, but you that is not the most up to date information. The only reason you might pull a picc slow is if you are meeting resistance and the vein has already spasmed.
This line comes straight from an interventional radiology book we have in the radiologists office "While removing, it is vital to exert slow, intermittent traction without applying any direct pressure at the insertion site. During the removal process, there is possibility that resistance may be present. This could be caused by a venous spasm. " It is also possible that the line can hang up on a valve, or become adheared to the vessel wall depending on how long the line has been in.
Your Interventional radiology policy book may need updating. New techniques and understanding of ways of performing procedures are developed daily and are constantly evolving. Please feel free to continue to do it however you want to, I was just providing the most up to date information on the pulling of a picc line.
im in the hospital too right now. last time i was 5. that was before picc lines. i got my first picc 2 days ago. hurt like a bitch goin in. my pft's were at 70% and im usually in upper 90's. cf isn't the most fun thing in the world. for my version of airway clearance, check ot my riding videos :D
Thank you for this delightful bit of medical education. Personally, I'd lick you til' you're sterile. Let me rephrase that...Damn you're hot.
You should keep your hair away from the site, by the way. And keep your head turned away from it too.

I am curious to know what the sensation is when it is pulled out or inserted.
Can a bp be taken while one is inserted? I have not done it, I went to the other arm and will keep doing so. I am just curious.

sorry for my ignorens but what is this picc thing ?
vshart 2 years ago
HAI!
PICC lines are peripherally inserted central catheter
we use them for prolonged drug therapy (chemo, antibiotics etc)
theyre usually stick in a peripheral vein and a fluoroscope is used to determine placement. Lines are directed towards the superior vena cava
BrendanIsCool 2 years ago
it's kind of like an Iv (intravenous) to give medicine...that can be used for a prolonged period of time

not to pull it out. we don't mask ourselves or pt's when we take them out. now we do mask to place them, and to change the dressings.
