I was wondering if i could get your opinion, i have a 352 in my 65 f100, and every time i start it it makes a grinding sound. I give it a couple good revs and it seams to die down and sometimes go away. It also comes back if i stop at a stop sign or light. I was told it could be my starter gear not recessing all the way and hitting my flywheel? But i think it is my tranny(cruise o matic)??? Any suggestions???
did u put the 390 in the truck or did it come with in it im just asking cause i have a 74 f100 that i put 390 fe an im having trouble finding headers 4 it it had a 360 in it i know nothing bout fords this one was my dads thats y i have it an i like that body style
im guessing that you put a new gasket on the headers look under the right header and see if theres a small hole that might have been plugged once i had a 1973 for blew the 360 bought another crate 360 put it in. the hole was plugged in factory in 1973 but after a while they where out just clean it, tap it, and plug it once again to fix the noise :)
Id guess it hadn't started in a while and the carb dried out. that's a common thing with old Fords if they don't get used for a few days it takes a while to get enough gas in the carb to fire it. It runs good though 390s usually do.
@philldholes Have you tried to Install a backflow preventor valve I put one on a cj7 I had many yrs ago and it worked out great or add an electric fuel pump there cheap and easy to Install ! Good luck !
very nice man. I have a 73 F100 with a 390 in it, only 20000 miles, it was my grandpas then my dads and now that im 18 mine, makes it that much more valueable to me, someday will be my sons i hope
Nice truck she's really quiet with those flowmasters I am surprised by that . I have a 75 F250 4x4 FE motor long tubes 4bbl true duals with walker mufflers it is the same soundin' untill I rev the hell out of it XD. check out my vids.
I had a 73 just like this with a 390.It had the oil bath cleaner, which i subsequently replaced. The truck was tough though and pulled quite a few stumps and hauled concrete.
Are yall talkin about the knockin noise. The 390 in my truck has that same noise and for the life of me i dont know where its coming from. It was sitting for 5 years in someones yard when i bought it. got it running and it knocks really bad when it gets warm. But it has tons of power. I dont want to run it and damage it, so should i be worried.
@pantera4ever91 naw, i don't think so. it seems that everbody on here and who ive talk to said theyve always been that way. and great name pantera is awesome.
Not sure about the heads. I'll find out when I get it back. Having dual exhaust installed also. I agree, it is coming from one of the heads. It's been that way for 20+ yrs. Runs great.
When you rebuilt, did you replace the wrist pins? Thats another thing I need to check. The motor never had this knock until I had it rebuilt around 20000 miles ago. Started knocking at 6000 miles
@77toyota mine is kinda like that too, i wonder if all 390's hit that hard. im putting headers and flowmasters on it. probably a carb. maybe it'll change the sound
That's the other thing I forgot about. It also might be the valve guides, which can't be fixed unless I pull the heads, something I'm not looking forward to doing.
Its not that hard of a job. I just replaced every gasket and the valve guides and the rear seal on my 360. Getting everything off and all the new gaskets and seal on, took me 1.5 days. Its was worth the time and money because she runs smooth now with no smoke or leaks.
Yea, until I hit the gas it was lifters, but after I let it idle its a different knock. I have had the whole top end off(except heads)and still have not found the noise. I think its a wrist pin, but won't know until I rebuild.
the exhaust on my 74 f100 sounds exactly like this and im in love with it

i believe it was either 6 or 7 cylinder. ruined the entire engine, could see the rod sticking out the side of the block. catastrophic failure
hallburnout70 2 years ago
i had a 289 with same noise, ended up being a wrist pin. ventilated the block
hallburnout70 2 years ago
Ventilated the block? Did it ruin the cylinder walls? Which cylinder was it on your 289?
timmay122489 2 years ago
My '72 F100 360 makes the same damn noise. Rebuilt bottom end, new timing set, new lifters...still does it.

That's good to know(not for you but for me) That's why I still think its in the heads. If you don't mind, what casting are your heads?

u may have to see if one of ur valvs are loose or some thing or u could have slack in ur rods

we had a noise like that once, turned out it was the fuel pump slaping the ecentric wheel on the cam, it was on a 390 also.
bowtieboyz 3 years ago
Yea, the very first thing I did was replace the fuel pump hoping it would solve the problem, but it didn't.
timmay122489 3 years ago
I have a 460 in my 78 f150 and it did that to it was the fuel pump. But it did sound like the motor.
