No more plea bargains, no more talks of "rehabilitating" the criminals, no more attempts to soften the sentences, no more "blame society" defense techniques. The hate crimes bill consists of adding a murder of a gay man, lesbian, transgender, or bisexual person under the hate crime laws. The fact was that when Matt was murdered the killers couldn't be charged with a hate crime because sexual orientation wasn't included. The bill would also require the FBI to track statistics on hate crimes against transgender people (statistics for the other groups are already tracked).

I am not sure whether or not we need hate crime laws. Crime is a crime regardless of the motives. But what we do need is harsher sentences for ALL crimes. No more plea bargains, no more talks of "rehabilitating" the criminals, no more attempts to soften the sentences, no more "blame society" defense techniques. Criminals have to be personally accountable for their crimes and face the consequences!

Matt did not die at the fencepost, although he was mortally injured. He died five days later in Fort Collins CO, from where Justice Byron R White came. He wrote the opinion on Bowers vs Hardwick in 1986, overruled since 2003 in Lawrence vs TX. There is a right to privacy between consenting adults in their own bedroom. At the time, beastiality was still legal in Texas, so I guess it was better to do it with an animal, rather than with another human being!

The hate crimes bill consists of adding a murder of a gay man, lesbian, transgender, or bisexual person under the hate crime laws. The fact was that when Matt was murdered the killers couldn't be charged with a hate crime because sexual orientation wasn't included. The bill would also require the FBI to track statistics on hate crimes against transgender people (statistics for the other groups are already tracked).

I actually live in Wyoming and followed the Shepard case while it was happening here. HE WAS NOT KILLED BECAUSE HE WAS GAY. The police did not list this as a hate crime...EVER. This douche is getting his 'facts' from the Laramie Project

It's not their attaction that is bothersome, acting on paraphilias such as pedophilia are a problem though. Pedophiles are attracted to children, a child can't concent. A child isn't mature enough to take part in any sexual/romantic activity. It's potentially damaging to the childs mental health.

I think it would be fine if the age of concent was lowered to even as young as 15, but we're talking about children who are even 2, 3, and 4 years old. You can't tell me that a 2 year old child should be taking part in sexual activity. They haven't even been able to walk for that long.
