A Broken Frame is one of my favorite albums, and I never get tired of Speak & Spell. And Construction Time Again gets me every time. I love this live video, it's just superb!
They were a good live band. Posterity hasn't been to kind to the early-'80s Synth-Pop scene, but songs like this blunt the edge of that criticism. This is one of my most favorite songs ever, from start to finish just perfect. The synth solo at the end is one of the greatest fades in Pop music.
Now this is what i call new wave, i would like depeche mode to now do a dark wave version of this tune so we they can release remaster, remix album NEW WAVE versus DARK WAVE
True pioneers of that earthy electronic sound..this track is totally brilliant and original in every respect - with maybe a small debt to the NY band Suicide.Have quite a few Mode cd's in my collection- an important band to me.
Whoever said mode's first three albums were junk needs a history lesson... Speak and Spell is a classic, I'll never understand why people hate A Broken Frame so much, and Construction Time Again is music at its best. Seriously don't bash if you haven't done your homework first!
Listen to them everyday in my car back and forth to work still. They are one of my core 4 aside from OMD, New Order and Simple Minds. And I agree that the early stuff is there best.
@metallibanger, What are you talking about? You obviously don't have a ear for good early 80's synth-pop! DM's first three albums, "Speak & Spell", "A Broken Frame" and "Construction Time Again" were some of the best things to come out of the early 80's!
@metallibanger, What are you talking about? Uou obviously don't have a ear for good early 80's synth-pop! DM's first three albums, "Speak & Spell", "A Broken Frame" and "Construction Time Again" were some of the best things to come out of the early 80's!
Best Synth pop/Electronic band ever!...but four of them, with Alan Wilder,
Nowdays they are still the best but they don't play too much live now in their keyboards, there are a lot of automatic sequences or complex spunds by one single key.
Anyway, they are the best.
Dave's voice was incredible, strong and powerful in this performance even the fact that they were so young!, ...Alan simply AWESOME!
sorry bigandmeaty i simply meant that listening to this, i can see how crap and contrived the music they have to listen to today is. Lady fking Gaga and wall to wall Cowell shit
if i were to chose what era i would go back well its obvious that i want to go back to the 80's up to early 90's. best damn era in terms of music. I love DM.
depeche should praise their early days more by playing more early mateirial like new life i just can't get enough see you. thsi is my favera of dpeche
In the Playing the Angel Tour the played Just Can't Get Enough, maybe they don't play this songs because these songs were written by Vince only and they don't feel them like theirs, it's just a thought, I saw this tour and they kicked asses so bad!
I'm watching this for the first time almost 30 years later and it looks brilliant! I hope this was among my first cassettes, but can't really remember.

Great band! It's funny hearing such a deep voice come out of such a baby face back then. I didn't realize they started so young.
