Not sure how its "much" stronger as both are pretty much totalled on the sides that made contact? Both are smashed in approx 2 feet, and move quite a bit. What strength are you seeing that isnt being shown on the video? Its a 4000 lb van versus a 5500lb pick up.

If you hit a very stiff target like a tree or wall, the pickup shown here would protect you much more worse because more of the g-force energy is absorbed by the passengers. So the safety of a car depends also on the type of the accident. For example, a few years ago the NHTSA awarded the VW Passat as the "average" safest car, because it offered a good protection in most (not all) crash situations.

Erm 60kph = not far off 40mph. Which is much of the time what they (Euro NCAP at least) crash test vehicles at. Both of these vehicles are old and so the damage is reasonable for a 40mph crash. They do not normally crash test at 60mph.

Actually, since the pickup is stopped, this is only equivalent to a 30-30 mph crash. It's accurate if you hit a stopped truck at 60, but if he was going 60 as well, it would be much worse.

Not always. Have you seen the video of an old holden commodore basically disentigrating into a wall? As far as big vehicles such as trucks and suvs go, YES, the older ones will have less damage, but that doesn't mean they are more safe. The new ones have advanced airbags and pre-tensioning seat belts so the g forces occur at a steady and gradual rate so you don't feel the full force all at once, whereas the older ones don't have that stuff so you do feel the full force of the impact.
