Isn't this song about Curt Smith? His leaving TFF. This album was recorded after Curt left and Roland went on to finish the project carrying on the TFF name.
It's deep stuff. Plain and simple. It's about them but it applies to more than just themselves alone. That's the thing about good art and the talented artists who make it. It can apply to life in so many other ways. In a way, it's like the prism on "dark side of the moon" illustrates. Sorry if their are any anti-pink floyd folks in here, but I find this quality about alot of talented musicians. I count Roland and Curt right up there with alot of them. They should be in the hall of fame.
@altops I don't know altops. Tears for Fears came to NC about a year or so ago. I wanted to go so bad but didn't have the money. I hope they come back. I also wonder if they would work with David Guilmore. That would be beyond words. Might even heal the huge canyon of a crack running through my mind.
I can tell that he's angry with Curt here. :( They both were angry for different reasons. But this song is pretty nasty when I really listen to it. Maybe it's because I don't really know nor do I understand what Roland was going on between these two. :(
you see i really can relate too this as i have a best friend who I love too bits and when you fall out you think that you want to hurt them and in reality you dont, i have met both Curt and Roland and they are both extraordinary people, really they are! very deep and genuine and I am happy that their emotions have come out in their music as I can really understand were their coming, from very profound but beautiful and there will never be anyone like them, only imitations!!!
This is the third best song on the cd, after the title track and BIDA. This is a fantastic TFF cd. RO is an amazing lyricist - the cutting lyrics about CS. 'The only thing you made was that tanned look...' - It's true. Ask people who were around at the time of Everybody wants to rule the world. They know the band and the songs, but not the singers' names. They'll say 'the one with the tan'.
But we're due for more work from the genius. Que te pasa? Roland. Vamos!
Genius!! - these guys have artistic intelligence - which is nowhere to be seen in the current artists (notwithstanding the evolution of sound through the decades)...
I didn't realize how good these guys were until a few years ago. they seemed so commercial and poppy to me at the time. amazed I was so wrong about them and a little sad they're not touring lately.
they have been touring ... hard to find out about because not widely publicized .... saw them last year in vegas and this year in atlanta ... fantastic show! exceeded my expectations ... hope you get a chance to see them ... namaste
@bearswilleatme They are touring, last year that had a huge tour and covered US east coast, Manila....all over. They're currently touring the US west coast.
Absolutely under-rated album by Tears For Fears. I suppose it just didn't get the decent musical reviews it deserved as the 'teeny bopper' and 'good looking' one had left (Curt Smith) and the sad pop charts governed by messrs Cowell and Walsh wanted to find the next best thing that had looks.
@WalshNo5 Lol dude Roland was always the "good looking one" and all that. How do you think the company kept letting him produce under the band name? They wouldntve let Curt continue as Tears for Fears
@FuLuShouXi It is obviously directed toward Curt. Curt is the "fish out of water" he sings about. Just read the lyrics and you'll see that. Sure, he touches on other issues -- their friendship, how they were connected by their interest in Janov, and how their relationship as friends and bandmates grew frayed as their fame increased -- but those are all about Curt and Roland's obviously firing a volley across Curt's bow. Curt answered back with Sun King.

@mykalroze sorry but everything you said there is lies and fucking bullshit...........i hope your soul burns in hell and suffers in torment for eternity
It gives me chills when he says "you're dreamin' your life away..." because he makes his voice sound like Curt. It seems Roland was really deeply hurt by what they went through... the hurt turned to anger which came out in some of the songs done afterwards. Love Roland and Curt, thanks for getting back together and I hope we are blessed with many more happy endings.
What a sexy, sensual song. It's got Rolie's trademark solid chord structure, electronica, rich vocals and impassioned guitar work woven together perfectly. Sometimes only a rift , a really bad break up, can bring out such great sounds. I never get tired of listening to this one...
Tremenda cancion y tremendo disco. Absolutamente subvalorado. ELEMENTAL es un disco perfecto!...nunca olvidare mis viajes al litoral central escuchando este disco!
When I first heard this song it made me mad, but it's rather catchy and you almost can't help but like it. You can tell it's an emotional song. Curt says it's his favorite solo TFF song. Curt does have a good sense of humor.
This whole album is Ro having a go at Curt, listen to the lyrics. Curt is not on this album, this is really Ro's first solo album, albeit with the TFF monicker attached. Raoul is the second and Tomcats the third.
I think there are bits in most of the songs that are having a go at Curt but i agree with what you said about not being able to take it back. They are both nice people i reckon also, nether met them but saw then on the happy ending tour at Manchester.
I MAY be wrong but it sounds like Roland is accusing Curt of basking in Rolands talent. "And now your laughing at the sun" The Sun King being Roland. "The only thing you made was that tanned look on your face" How does one get a sun tan? I love them both. I have loved them since The Big Chair. Although their break up was sad many good things came from it. As Roland said "Nothing ever changes unless theres some pain"
I like their songs because they would sing about real life events quite often. I have noticed this with 'Change', 'Memories Fade' and 'Fish Out of Water'. "Power', on the other hand, just confuses the hell out of me.
I read the lyrics before I'd heard this song and didn't think I'd like it. But in fact, I do like the jazzy arrangement. Thanks for posting, I think I might end up downloading this.
The funny thing about this song is I like the musical arrangements but the lyrics are very bitter. I prefer 'Good-night Song' to this (which was again a reference to the split but in a more reflective way). Bizarrely, this happens to be one of Curt Smith's favourite songs of Tears for Fears in which he wasn't involved.
I absolutely agree with you. That's exactly what I felt when I heard this song for the first time. The vocals during the chorus sound like Curt. It is both interesting and ironic.
It isn't difficult to tell Roland's voice apart from Curt's. It's much more projected and, well, better than Curts. Listen to 'Power' or 'Fish out of Water' and then listen to 'Advice for the Young at Heart'...
Thats great to hear that this is one of Curt's favorite after his departure. Maybe the guys will preform it live next time they go on tour. My favorite TFF song!!
Great song in a superb album. This is the anti-Curt one. I read that Curt had one entitled "Sun King" and that it was anti-Roland. I don´t know that one so...there goes my request.
