  • Wow. This is a great version. Don't need any vocals...Knew he had gotten big but never thought he was this big.

  • oh my god he was so fat :D

  • @loouuni Did you expect the man everyone called MOUNTAIN to be a 135lb teenager!? Get out of the way and LET THE BIG BOYS ROCK!! :)

  • Beethoven... not such a rollover

  • Beethoven... not such a rollover

  • This Is actually @ Cardy's In Houston ,Texas! 1981..I know For Sure cuz I was Playing With Ironbutterfly the same Night And Mountain was The Opening Act...I have The Whole Show On VHS!..Recorded Off The TV Show TEXAS ROCKS!..March 1981!...It Was Packed And Very Hot And Sweaty!!!

  • that guitar dont sound like west

  • @strings191 Its LW, no question, no mystery.

  • @strings191 when i saw leslie at his peak,he used a les paul jr,and really big SUN STACK,which sounded like his records spot on.i agree this rig here doesnt sound like the west fat distinctive sound at all

  • @dempsey981 is this true about his leg ?

  • @strings191 It is true. Leslie lost his leg due to a life-long fight with diabetes. Otherwise, he is in the best shape of his life, and is in every way unnoticeable from his earlier years, much lighter and much healthier. He never would have survived this time if he hadn't. Leslie West, the ultimate survivor and owner of a lion's heart.

  • @dempsey981 is this true about his leg ? he always played a lespaul . a fat sound . now a kramer.

  • @strings191 Leslie West does NOT play a Kramer, at all. He plays his Dean Signature Leslie West models, which was crafted to emulate the Les Paul Jr he made famous, with todays technology. It has a tone worthy of Leslie West's signature, one of a kind.

  • @depper ok,but i dont accept that ax,the new one,is better than his old les paul jr.i just dont hear it,its thin or something.maybe its my ear...dunno.

  • @dempsey981 Oh never did I say the Dean was "better" than his LP Jr. Les created a sound with his LP Jr. and Sunn amps that was one of a kind. Today, he's still got his own tone, check my channel for Leslie's work with Joe Satriani, to hear the tone he emanates from his Deans.

  • @dempsey981 he plays kramer on , never in my life live, watch on utube,

  • @strings191 That wasn't a kramer, that was a Steinberger guitar.

  • Man he looks like crap here.

  • very fat !

  • Lets all pray for the great Leslie West. Last weekend, Leslie had his leg amputated in order to save his life. The operation was a success. Now the toughest part begins, the recovery. We are all behind you Leslie! You have a wonderful family and friends around you. We will lift you up like you've lifted US up. Long live Leslie West!!!!!

  • wish i could get a tone like that brilliant

  • rock keeps even the dead alive.

  • Not exactly the pinnacle of his career...though I'm delighted he lived to get through it.

  • now you know where Warren Hayes gets his tone and vocal stylings

  • Back when Leslie was with Mountain he was called the 300 pound guitar superman

  • This man rocks... ALOT..

  • Guitar King 1980

  • Damn..He looks like "ANDRE THE GIANT"...

  • I love this big Mountain of a guy. I'm tired of all the toothpick crack/meth heads.

I'd like to be in a Dennys at 3 in the morning with this guy and chow down.

Yea I know lots of food is bad for you. AlI I know is I rarely get sick now that I'm heavy. I was an athlete most of my life yet I was always getting colds and sick.

I think you need some body armor. Just skin and bones them germs just boogie in.

Speaking of boogie. I'm still learning from Leslies boogies.

  • he's one of my fave guitarists of all time. I sneaked in to a Mountain sound check at the CLE arena back in like 1970. Not only did they keep security from kicking us out, but they actually took requests from my friend and I !!! They played Tired Angels and Travelin' in the Dark for us !!! I'll never forget that day. If you think Mountain was loud in concert, try being the only ones in the room !! haha

  • @bandity2k ---you lucky dog.

  • @bandity2k I'll bet you hear phones ringing 24/7 365

  • The Best Version from Mountain!

  • West just owns this song. Sadly, West was in very bad health here, and looking at West here and West today, its AMAZING to see how Leslie turned his physical health around. West isn't only a Rock legend, but a TRUE EXAMPLE that its never too late to turn your life around. YOU GO LESLIE!!

  • @depper I agree, I mean I'm sure he has probably had to have some surgery or some really extreme things to get back in shape and even stay alive to this point, but I admire him all the more for that. I saw him play live a couple years ago here in San Francisco, in Golden Gate Park, big free show in the Park and he came out and jammed. I couldn't believe it was really him. I'm one of the few guys maybe in his 30s who is really into a guy like this, but he is sickening. Not sick any more.

  • great comments!

  • This must have been a surreal period for Leslie,

as it is for me to watch.

By 1980, Mountain, West Bruce & Lange were distant memories,

Leslie had to forge an identity based on himself alone.

    Believe me, I was around,

Leslie wasn't on the radar in the summer of 1980.

    He was pretty much underground.

Also, Leslie's early 70s hard rock style early was not exactly in vogue.

And he was at rock bottom with drugs and obesity.

  • Leslie West will ALWAYS be a BIG MAN to many of us fans. He was big enough to kick his obesity, big enough to kick his drug habit, big enough to get his drinking under control. Big enough to get his health under control. Leslie faced his demons like a MAN, and did what many would have called impossible. Leslie West has won life.

  • I think he discovered that his fatness added mass to the guitar and that's want gave him great tone. If he was skinny it definately wouldn't have sounded as good.

  • it took me a long time to realized what a great talent Leslie is..in face just last week or so, probaly because of his physical appearence..man people are ignorant we always..always judged the book by its cover..so sad..but Now I have great respect for Leslie and so happy to see so many great guitarists paying respect to this great man..I bet he took alot of shit for his weight..but he hang out and jammed w/Hendrix repespected too, so theres a happy ending..

  • Rock and fucking Roll

  • awsome. had to come back for more big beethoven :D

btw youtube's audio on the vids have been cuttin out on occasion? anyone else havin same trouble?

  • Leslie was never as grotesquely fat as he was here.

    Or dirty.

    Or smelly.

    Or strung out.

I can't believe he din't just roll over and die onstage.

By the way, I think it was easier for a guy to get laid in that audience than it is now.

  • @wheelinthesky300 Haha does leslie look like shit here? What I love about this video however is it shows if your love of music is GREATER than your demons you can PERSEVERE! Show em how its done big man!

  • @wheelinthesky300 never even noticed!

  • @wheelinthesky300 hahaha omg ouch!!!

  • a toothless newyorker ?

  • good thing he didn't try to hump that poor guitar a la Hendrix

  • I heard this on LP record and it was powerful

  • Do you know the titel of this record?

  • aint that a Gibson ex55?

  • For sure Leslie at not his healthiest on this one, but still his feel and magic are there. Incredible.

  • Explorers 4 the Win!

  • Wow it's amazing what the loss of 150 lbs and a good set of dentures can do for a man! I really think his playing improved as well as his health.

  • Leslie is rocking man

  • I am happy to see that Leslie is a healthier man these days and still playing. I've never seen footage of him this big. He looks like Leslie West ate Randy Bachman. I am glad Randy has also taken the same path.

  • Mr Heavy Rock to me.

  • Wow man, it's really amazing the turn around in this guys life. I didn't recognize Leslie at first. Glad this guy made it. I saw him recently in NYC with Michael Schenker for the first time and got blown away by these 2 guitar giants.

  • Les was on junk around this time too, which didn't help things health wise.

So glad that he's a survivor & woke up to getting healthy.

  • Holy Shit......Davis made UTube....

  • thank god he lost that weight , hes such a national treasure!!

  • shit did my comment go through? damn youtube.

  • HAhahaha.. Yea Cydonian, YT does this to me like 25% of the time. I find you have to come back every few minutes to see if its done .

Kinda reminds me of my wife getting dressed!! :)

  • wow he did look pretty bad here. i'm amazed he's survived after goin through drugs and weight issues like that.

i'm a lil pudgy myself and have high blood pressure. makes me wanna get out and jog.

Leslie, ur an inspiration. i think i'll start hittin the healthrider thats collecting dust on my patio.

  • where's my comment? testing 1, 2, 3...

  • i see my comment, but i have to click the link "see all 10 comments" at bottom of page to see it.

    lol crummy youtube

  • I love it

  • î'm sorry to say guys - this a great version of roll over beethoven...I like all roll over beethoven versions from leslie west....but in this video you can see leslie riding very high...look at his eyes....his overweight....his teeth...cacaine...but how ever....he is great....and it seems he has managed his problems...

  • Preach it Commander. Leslie came from the same ilk of Elvis Presley. Jimi Hendrix. Jim Morrison. These folks got rich off of their creativity. They all took drugs and did THEMSELVES in.

Somehow, someway, 45 years after he began, Leslie can say he SURVIVED.

THAT, to me, is the ultimate Rock n Roll role model.

  • fuck elvis

  • yeah i hate that cacaine

  • @CommanderMcCool Where can I find the mp3 version?

  • I loved the fat missing teeth Leslie West. This man turned his life around. A true rock legend. we are very lucky he is still with us.

  • Fat....?

    What fat?

    ;)

  • What happened to his teeth? lol

I'm assuming he wears dentures now. =]

even if he does, that has nothing to do with how good of a guitarest he is.

  • He wore them down from constant chewing!

Kidding, of course. But no, not dentures...he mentioned awhile ago (on the Howard Stern show) that he had full dental implants.

  • i had this sent with info saying it was 1976 Don Kirshners Rock Concert... but i bow down to your info you posted on it with the Band Members.. priceless!!! and thanks!!

  • no problem man :) I posted it the same way you did, but then on the 3rd go around I said WAIT A MINUTE .... I REMEMBER that vest that looked like it was PAINTED ON LESLIE'S SHIRT!!! Then I tied it to other concert footage in my personal collection!! :) hehe

  • "I can listen to this song everyday, and 12 times on Saturday Mama!"

A fuckin ROCK n ROLL SONIC ASSAULT, West took second seat to NOBODY onstage. He was a WEAPON of MASS DESTRUCTION on stage... in more ways than one!

I feel BLESSED West didnt succumb to drugs like SO MANY of the greats did. LESLIE SURVIVED, but oh MANNN how good did Leslie play during this period! :)
