The reason we wear pads is because in the 1920's about 20 people have died and hundreds were injured. They stop so much because football is a game of strategy and planning, (which imo makes football better than rugby) instead of rugby where its just running from one side to the other. And that doesnt mean they cant play for 80 mins and only have a break at 40, its just a whole different game. Also, football players can tackle pretty much any way they want to so thats another reason for pads.

American football takes a larger toll on the body than sports like Basketball, Soccer(football) and baseball, and that is why fewer games are played.
