they put the les paul plates above the neck pickup because when les paul withdrew his endorsement with the sg because he didn't like it, gibson had already made plastic plates for the sg saying les paul and they didn't want t waste them

i've been playing guitar for a while now and one thing that i have found out about guitars is that almost all of the sound if not completly all the sound is in the pickups. therefor if you throw a nice set of pickups in an epiphone it'll sound just as good if not better than a gibson. and feelwise, gibsons tend to be a little heavier.

ok guys, stop arguing and i'll settle your stupid sg-les paul debate. the Les paul was made before the sg, obviously. eventually, the les paul was redisigned to fit future designs, and gibson put the same hardware onto an sg body, like you see today. They called this a les paul custom and sold it for a shit-lot. eventually it became super popular, but too expensive for a normal consumer, therefore gibson made the sg from scratch, without using les paul hardware.

Actually, the SG was gonna be a new model of Les Paul, but the person who the Les Paul is designed after (the guitarist name is Les Paul, and he designed it) didn't like the new design so he asked them to change the name so they named it SG for super guitar or something.
