About 3 years ago I found out that I was vitamin d deficient. I had to find out this for myself because I did not feel well . All the doctors I went to said there was nothing wrong with me. So I had a foot scan done at a church with various scans given mostly for heart. I then was directed to get a bone density test. All my doctors were so mad because I was able to get this test done.....and boy it showed my bones were in trouble. Docs mad about me finding out myself! ?????????
@BritLes9 vitamins wont cause cancer if you don't go crazy with it. You should look into UK research into B-17. But synthetic vitamins are not as good. Brewers yeast has the complete B complex. Do your own research on B-17.

In 2010, my mother died of liver cancer that started as duodenum cancer in 2007. In 2009, it went into remission such that they couldn't find it on x-rays. After her death, I observed the medication she had been prescribed and found that a few months prior to its remission she had been given 1600iu of vitamin d3. I don't know why they took her off, but i have some crazy ideas - I think she was used as a guinea pig. If I ever get it, i'll be taking vd3 - I sure won't take chemo...you die quicker.

To all the folks who insist we can get enough Vitamin D3 from the sun: If we live north of the 43rd parallel that only works between May and September, and then only between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm, and then only if we have 40% or more of our skin exposed and then only if we don't bathe with soap for 48 hours (it is produced near the surface of the skin and washing with soap washes it away).

@dolldeelight If you have only recently found that you have breast cancer as you indicate it is actually likely that you have actually had it for years. It takes years between the beginnings of breast cancer and the first detectable lump so there is virtually no chance that your vitamin D intake is connected to your contracting breast cancer. interesting item for you! I had rickets at age 6-8 from post war Austria, living in a bombed factory . Came to Australia, and got sunburnt many times, and for last 50 years if I go in sun , get red (very) and (ALWAYS) peel within days. Some months ago I started taking Vitamin D ( started at 4,000 to 8000 IU per day, ignoring doctors opinions ( I work with them as I am an intensive care nurse). Guess what! when I go out in the sun, my skin now is going brown, and hasn't peeled!

Infection is the proven root cause of *some* diseases. For why a particular individuals' immune system failed to protect them from some disease, that is going to vary depending on the individual and the disease. The person could have been immunocompromised, they could have had no previous exposure to the pathogen (or a antigenically similar organism). And again, any immunology textbook (or even just basic biology) will to a fine job explaining this - YouTube forums aren't the ideal format

Do yourself a favor, pick up *any* basic college-level biology text and read the section on the immune system. You'll get a far better explanation with pictures and diagrams, than anyone can offer via comment boxes with tiny character limits/Take a bio class, you might find it interesting.

I take fish oil every day. This video states (at 24:54) that cod liver oil is high in vitamin A and therefore competes with vitamin D for receptor availability making it harder for Vitamin D to get on board. Would you direct me to any information regarding how manage this (for example, alternate supplementation and if so on what type of schedule?) Thanks for any input.
It depends what kind of fish oil you take, I take fish oil which does not have vitamin A or vitamin D, only omega 3 (EPA, DHA, ....). I take separately vitamin D. Vitamin A is not an issue I think vitamin A deficiency is very rare, it is enough to eat one carrot in a few days.
My recommendation to you is to take separately vitamin D and omega 3 because in that way you can better control dosing, also vitamin A is much more toxic than vitamin D and I think you should not be taking vitamin A at all if you have normal diet.
Take your Vitamin D in the moring and the Vitamin A in the evening. Vitamin A is a lot easier to get from diet so it's not so much an issue as Vitamin D.
twinchaser: some fantastic food sources of Vitamin D include salmon, sardines, shrimp, milk, cod, and eggs. Sockeye salmon are an exceptionally rich source of vit. d but even with these foods you still need the sun and if you live in an area where you don't have a lot of sunlight or it's too cold to expose your skin then you should take a supplement. I've been taking them for a few years and I've had great results in my health!
If you are going to eat oily fish to provide dietary vitamin D, don't eat farm raised fish. Their vitamin D content is low. Eat only wild caught salmon.

Vitamin D is not available in substantial amounts from the diet. Sunscreen blocks the UVB rays from which the body synthesizes (makes) vitamin D.

People normally get vitamin D through sun exposure. Milk has a small amount of vitamin D as do egg yolks. Wild salmon have some vitamin D, but unless you want to eat lots of salmon every day, you can either invest in UV-B lamp or take supplements. Vitamin D3 supplements are cheap. The dosage is generally 35 X your weight in pounds = IUs / day. I take about 5500 IUs / day and have done it for months at a time. As a result I experience a lot less inflammation in my joints.

People should eat better, if Vit D is found in beef liver, butterfat, oily fish, why are we not including this in our diets? Why not spend more time in the sun without sunscreen? Modern life and the yuck factor (people in this country don't eat these foods) has deprived us of naturally occurring Vit D. My daughter took the prescribed Vit D supplement and it made her feel very sick. Her serum level was measured in winter, well, that is ridiculous to expect that her level would be normal.

Vitamin B deficiency was pretty well proven to be the cause of cancer through the 1920s to 1950s research. Animal to human.
Brewers yeast contains all of the B vitamins.

I had pain in my right breast for 5 months & I had a large lump about size of a silver dollar but thicker. My urine was cloudy everyday, (Dr. Reams, said most dead cancer cells comes out in the urine)

To all the folks who insist we can get enough Vitamin D3 from the sun: If we live north of the 43rd parallel that only works between May and September, and then only between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm, and then only if we have 40% or more of our skin exposed and then only if we don't bathe with soap for 48 hours (it is produced near the surface of the skin and washing with soap washes it away).

Think about it children especially don't go out in the sun like we did back in the 50's and 60's. Look at the play grounds in the summer the kids aren't out there playing like there was years ago. The kids are in doors playing on the computer or watching TV.

@dolldeelight If you have only recently found that you have breast cancer as you indicate it is actually likely that you have actually had it for years. It takes years between the beginnings of breast cancer and the first detectable lump so there is virtually no chance that your vitamin D intake is connected to your contracting breast cancer. There is a chart at "grass roots health" (all one word) dot org that can be found down the right column. It should be useful to you.

interesting item for you! I had rickets at age 6-8 from post war Austria, living in a bombed factory . Came to Australia, and got sunburnt many times, and for last 50 years if I go in sun , get red (very) and (ALWAYS) peel within days. Some months ago I started taking Vitamin D ( started at 4,000 to 8000 IU per day, ignoring doctors opinions ( I work with them as I am an intensive care nurse). Guess what! when I go out in the sun, my skin now is going brown, and hasn't peeled!

It can't prevent "mental illness" because there is no such animal. It might prevent dementia or brain disease such as alzheimers, tumors, neurological malfunctions, but mental illness is not a brain disease; it is an issue of learning how to manage one's emotions, period. Most people in the UK in winter have levels about a quarter (32nmol/l) required for cancer prevention and at the end of summer we get up to (70nmol/l) about half safe level (137.5nmol).

1. We know the root cause of many diseases - bubonic plague, chicken pox, polio, influenza - all these and more are provably caused by infection with a particular pathogen. Dracunculiasis is caused by infection by the guinea worm. Scurvy and rickets, for instance, are again provably caused by vitamin deficiencies. Pick up a book, go to a class, do some experiments yourself - that's the beauty of science - a claim has to be testable and repeatable to be valid.

Infection is the proven root cause of *some* diseases. For why a particular individuals' immune system failed to protect them from some disease, that is going to vary depending on the individual and the disease. The person could have been immunocompromised, they could have had no previous exposure to the pathogen (or a antigenically similar organism). And again, any immunology textbook (or even just basic biology) will to a fine job explaining this - YouTube forums aren't the ideal format

All you need is 15 minutes of sun on your skin without sunsceen. I was difficient in vitamin D and my alternative Dr. gave me 100,000 injections every 2 weeks for a total of 3, this brought my levels to normal. $50 an injections not bad. Now I take 5000 units of D3 every other day.

Nope, only very few foods naturally contain vitamin D and the sun only delivers sufficient UVB above the 43rd parallel during the summer and between the hours of 11 am and 1 pm. The rest of the year it just ain't gonna happen. The above video is the LATEST RESARCH completely outdating all prior information. We routinely metabolize 5,000 IU a day so how can 400 IU even BEGIN to be sufficient?

This video states (at 24:54) that cod liver oil is high in vitamin A and therefore competes with vitamin D for receptor availability making it harder for Vitamin D to get on board. Would you direct me to any information regarding how manage this (for example, alternate supplementation and if so on what type of schedule?) Thanks for any input.

It depends what kind of fish oil you take, I take fish oil which does not have vitamin A or vitamin D, only omega 3 (EPA, DHA, ....). I take separately vitamin D. Vitamin A is not an issue I think vitamin A deficiency is very rare, it is enough to eat one carrot in a few days.

My recommendation to you is to take separately vitamin D and omega 3 because in that way you can better control dosing, also vitamin A is much more toxic than vitamin D and I think you should not be taking vitamin A at all if you have normal diet.

Take your Vitamin D in the moring and the Vitamin A in the evening. Vitamin A is a lot easier to get from diet so it's not so much an issue as Vitamin D.

twinchaser: some fantastic food sources of Vitamin D include salmon, sardines, shrimp, milk, cod, and eggs. Sockeye salmon are an exceptionally rich source of vit. d but even with these foods you still need the sun and if you live in an area where you don't have a lot of sunlight or it's too cold to expose your skin then you should take a supplement. I've been taking them for a few years and I've had great results in my health!

If you are going to eat oily fish to provide dietary vitamin D, don't eat farm raised fish. Their vitamin D content is low. Eat only wild caught salmon.

Carole talks about how some heard about toxicity. From what i remember that was with the synthetic Vit D2 not the natural D3, so make sure D3 not D2.

I was recently diagnosed with a severe vitamin D deficiency. I just finished my 8 week course of 50,000IU weekly.
Vitamin D is not available in substantial amounts from the diet. Sunscreen blocks the UVB rays from which the body synthesizes (makes) vitamin D.
Those of us who live in the northern climates (above Boise / Minneapolis) need to do further research and seriously consider supplementation. I'll be taking vitamin D daily for the rest of my life due to this experience.

2 hey we have found something that is part of a normal healthy diet that is good for you and we can make a supplement to let people add it to their diets rather than getting them to eat healthy. If we do that we can make people think that they are being healthy while they still eat rubbish

I'd be interested in hearing how to get more D in your diet? It's not a regularly occurring vit. in a "healthy" or otherwise, diet. Perhaps you can suggest a few foods that a person can get in daily, at a recommended dosage??? Thanks

People normally get vitamin D through sun exposure. Milk has a small amount of vitamin D as do egg yolks. Wild salmon have some vitamin D, but unless you want to eat lots of salmon every day, you can either invest in UV-B lamp or take supplements. Vitamin D3 supplements are cheap. The dosage is generally 35 X your weight in pounds = IUs / day. I take about 5500 IUs / day and have done it for months at a time. As a result I experience a lot less inflammation in my joints.

Yet another you need to take xyz suplement message. Which is probably going to result in people going out and using supplements rather than actually eating a proper balanced diet.
This sort of scientific research seems to come into 2 catagories
1 the after years of research oh look we have found traces of something scary on xyz which people have been eating with no problem for years lets tell everyone to stop eating it

People should eat better, if Vit D is found in beef liver, butterfat, oily fish, why are we not including this in our diets? Why not spend more time in the sun without sunscreen? Modern life and the yuck factor (people in this country don't eat these foods) has deprived us of naturally occurring Vit D. My daughter took the prescribed Vit D supplement and it made her feel very sick. Her serum level was measured in winter, well, that is ridiculous to expect that her level would be normal.
