For those who are not quite sure what Gisèle MacKenzie says in her lyrics, it's "Polly Bergen left the key to your dressing room with me. And said to thank you! " Polly took over for for Dorothy during her pregnancy leave. There is a Youtube video where we can see the Your Hit Parade gang welcoming Polly to the show. ...Rowby
I have been looking at this video almost every day now. I really love it! The cast, the camera work , even the choreography -- it simply outstanding. Notice how always the center of attention -- she is keep high in the shot, with the supporting cast and dancers slightly at a lower level. These people knew what they were doing in the good old days of live TV. Any student of TV or film can learn a lot from this short clip and the professionals that made it happen so many years ago.
@rowbyrowby I am so happy you have enjoyed this video. You have certainly centered on some very important aspects of the camera work and choreography. And to think that it was all done live...only one chance to do it right. I really miss YHP but am so thankful to have so many videos of the songs of that time...a time that will be remembered for many years. Thanks again for your post. Collins follower
The song is called "(You (Gee But You're Wonderful))". It was also the theme song for the popular daytime CBS series, Art Linkletter's House Party. According to Wikipedia it was apparently written in 1936. If you do a Youtube Search for "Art Linkletter's house party" you'll hear the music as the opening theme.
Fantastic video after all of these years. I noticed how just 1 tv camera was able to capture in the hallway most of the arrangement of the participants heading to the elevator to pick Dorothy Parker up. No special effects, no multiple takes, all done live. Thanks for sharing.
At the time, "YOUR HIT PARADE" originated from New York at NBC's Studio 8-H in Rockefeller Center- today, it's best known as the studio that "SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE" is staged. Dorothy had to return, as she was known as "The Sweetheart of Lucky Strike" (the show's primary sponsor), and delivered at least one commercial for them on every telecast, either live or on film. She was married to Raymond Scott, the show's arranger/conductor [he also wrote the famous "Be Happy- Go Lucky!" jingle].
Dorothy Collins-i remember this from the show. i was a youngster, and she was off of the show to have a baby-a daughter. Miss.Collins had a great career-She went from the sweetheart of Your Hit Parade to the musical --Follies on broadway. A great career. Finally her vocal records are being released,Great. We all miss her great vocal talents, but have her music being released and re-issued. .I am amazed that she never returned to the broadway stage. She was great-beyond great in Follies.
RIP Russell Arms who died today - in his 90's. Seen in this clip.
