I have an 85 dodge diplomat salon. Check it out. ill post another video soon. Right now the car has a new flat black hood an front grill and what not.
Rear wheel drive cars are better on a road trip, because they don't have the "Parasitic Drag" on the steering wheel that front wheel drive cars have...
That was three years ago... For some reason the clearcoat has suddenly disintegrated on the roof and a bit on the hood... It needs a paint job now, but the rest of the car is still very nice with 146,000 km on it. Mechanically it's still excellent!
@fehquig Was it parked under a tree? I had an 1987 Gran Fury Saloon 318cid and I think yours is cooler cuz its a Can-spec Caravel! Just like a Pontiac Beuamont is cooler than a Chevelle!
Beautiful car. I've got an 88 turbo shadow and have owned it for the last 3 years. I'm 19 and would actually love to have one of those, although i would probably wake up the motor a little :P
My mom actually had a 87 Diplomat years ago too, and my dad had a 88 Lancer ES. Guess it was only natural to go with another mopar.
I had a 79 LeBaron 318 back in early 90's, was a great car and I really liked the options.....you have a nice Mopar to have today....one that will last many years to come
I'm faced with a dilemma... Although I like the Plymouth, I also have a '93 Fifth Avenue New Yorker with all the bells and whistles which gets better gas mileage, and I will soon be forced to keep only one car. I will be sad to see the Caravelle go,
All the mistakes that were made on the Aspen/Volare were corrected on the Diplomat/Fury/Caravelle/Fifth Avenue. They are still excellent cars and give good service with little more than routine maintenance...
New ignition wires mostly cured my stalling problems. For a while there, I was driving with two feet and throwing it into neutral whenever coming to a red light or stop sign :)
I have an '86 Dodge Diplomat and I love it! The engine has had lots of 'extras' added onto it. I paid $800 for it from a local guy and I love it, man. The interior is in *MINTY* condition. Love my Diplomat!
Mine is still in great condition... Maybe some day I'll make some improvements, but I'm broke so the car will remain stock and keep getting me to work every day. I also have a '93 New Yorker Fifth Avenue that I picked up cheap, but I still prefer driving the '87 Caravelle...

It is identical to the Diplomat but it says Plymouth on it rather than Dodge. I have only owned two Chrysler products; a 1980 New Yorker Fifth Avenue with a 2-barrel 360 and this Caravelle, both excellent cars! Too bad they don't make anything like them anymore...
Could you kindly replace the chime in this Plymouth Carravelle with a scary buzzer from a 1982-89 Dodge Ram truck or 1978-82 Buick and then do a video of this Plymouth with the scary buzzer?
Oh yeah! You should definately swap the chime in this Plymouth for the one from a 1974-77 Ford Maverick as that one is very scary and then do a video of this Plymouth with the scary buzzer.
love this ride....very rare you usually only see fifth aves left in this type of body style
as for lincolns/caddys... I hate the lincolns of the 80s, they are really bland in a bad way and the only engine you could get was the 5.0/4.6
caddys are nice though....they look very well styled (the broughams anyways)
this car seems dated for 1988 though it looks like it belongs in the late 70s early 80s....I know it is an 88...im just kinda surprised (dont take it in a bad way though)
It's all good... When I was looking for a car, I was looking for a proven product, and yes, the design dates back to the seventies. That is not a bad thing. I wanted a real car, not a front-wheel-drive jelly bean, and I don't care how stylish it is.
In fact, I'm glad it goes a bit against the current thread...
Yes this was the first of the downsized cars from Chrysler in 1978 I believe and it was such a strong seller that they made it for a decade.
In fact many derivatives of this car were made in America: Chrysler Lebaron, Plymouth Gran Fury, Dodge Diplomat, Town & Country Station Wagon and a very luxurious Chrysler Fifth Avenue which became Chrysler's largest car in 1982 downsized from the large wheelbase Fifth Avenue/Newport which were made until 1981.
I also once had a 1980 Fifth Avenue. That one had a lot more legroom and trunk space, and I would absolutely LOVE to have another one of those. The Caravelle is probably the rarest variant of this bodystyle :)
I have a 1980 Aspen, so I know what you mean by the transverse suspension.
I also have a 1978 Chrysler Cordoba with a 360 4-bbl.
All of my cars were from older people as well. Both cars were purchased for less than $4,000, and both have less than 33,000 miles on them EACH. The Aspen has most of the original paint, and the Cordoba has ALL original paint.
Wow! Those are some good finds... I also had a 1980 New Yorker with a 360 once... It gave me many years of trouble free service, and I could kick myself for selling it...
Holy shit! Do I have a response for you :) You won't believe it. That's beautiful ... do you still have this car?
Nimble and light is what all police officers here that I talk to tell me about that car. They dislike the Crown Victoria's and hark back to what they call the glory days of Diplomats and Grand Furys as they were marketed here.
You lived my dream of having a Black rear drive police package car. Yup, drooling as I'm a Mopar fan. Kenosha made all those great AMC's too :)
This car is a keeper. I've had it for almost seven years, which is the second-longest time I've ever kept a car...
It definitely is nimble and light, a total joy to drive! There is no comparison to the Crown Vics that I spend too much time in, in fact I'm sitting in a Crown Vic now!
Mine is the Civilian model. I could easily modify it to Police Pack specs, but why mess with what is already a good thing? LOL
A Mopar is a Mopar! Rear drive is having a strong comeback. How do you feel about the new Challenger? I think it's a step in the right direction but seeing it in person it missed all that I loved about the original which was low and wide with thin pillars. Hope I don't offend anyone but since cars are now over 2.5 inches taller, it looks like an SUV next to the original lol ... I'd still love to have it.
Thing is I saw the dashboard on the thumbnail and I'd love to do a video for you :)
The new Challenger is a cartooney caricature of the original just like what the New Beetle is to the old VolksWagen. A 340 Dart with a 4-Speed is more my style :) Why they built things like the K-Car beats me...
Do you need any of my dashboard footage to make this video of yours? :)
Great way to put it regarding the Challenger/Beetle. My uncle had a brand new 1980 Fifth Avenue in Beige, gorgeous opera lights as you know :) Loved the Imperial. Had an 81 Cordoba too with a faux convertible top in white! Slant 6 however.
K-Cars did save Chrysler from bankruptcy but there's no way those ads at the time that said a 4 cylinder turbo was as smooth and fast as a V8 lol. The country was in a crappy recession though.
My Fifth Avenue was black with a stainless steel top, lizard tone vinyl around the backlite and C-pillars, and the 360, converted to run on propane. The interior was all tan leather.
I wish I still had it, but I sold it for gas and food money on a drive to California in my 3/4 ton Suburban that I had set up for sleeping in... That was a damn good trip!
The model is developing a kind of cult following as the last of a breed of rear wheel drive Chrysler products with torsion bar suspension up front and leaf springs in the rear. All I was looking for when shopping for a good used car was a proven product that was tough so that it would last long, cheap to buy, and cheap to repair because I was and still am broke. I think the New Yorker variant is the ultimate old guy's car. The younger crowd goes more for Cadillacs and Lincolns of the '80s...
the younger crowd doesnt understand the importance of muscle cars and rwds like me and you do. theyre riding around in 130hp hondas that they call badass while i cruise around in a 300hp Dart with low gears and the power to smush them bastards. as for being broke, alot of us are nowadays. and 318s are great great motors
The Diplomat was also marketed in Canada through Dodge dealers. Why the Plymouth version has a different name depending on what country it was sold in beats me. We had the Fury from the fifties through the seventies in Canada...
Yep! We had that one up here too along with the Dodge 600 and the Chrysler E-Class... How Chrysler could simultaneously produce two totally different vehicles with the same nameplate is beyond me. Only about 2000 of the RWD model were produced for the 1987 model year. I imagine the US version Grand Fury was equally rare, while the New Yorker and Diplomat were more numerous...
What fun I had when I went into an auto parts store in Chicago asking for a power steering hose for an '87 Caravelle :)
Well, mine is a Caravelle Salon. I imagine the K-car based machine is a Caravelle but not a Salon. They should have just called it a Fury. The Plymouth Fury was well-known for something like twenty years...
I prefer Chryslers with torsion bars in the front, rear wheel drive, and V8s or Slant Sixes...
I once had a choice between an Olds Omega and a Dodge 600 at the same price. I needed a cheap used car for getting from A to B, no frills. I chose the Olds and drove it for a couple of years with no troubles...
The V6 sold me when compared to the four banger...
the 600 was either a 83 or 84? did it have the carburated 2.2l chrysler motor? or the carburated 2.6l Mitsubishi Motor? if it was an 83 then it Lacked the Wrap around Rear tail-Lamps! 84-Later models had the wrap-around rear tail-lamps....so did 1984-Later chrysler new yorkers and Lebarons! ..so if it lacked wrap-around tail lamps then it was an 83 Model!
Oh Yeah! was it any good? Mines been AWESOME! drives and runs Like its brand new! but it was pampered for 25 years by the original Owners! i Love it! only 155,000 Original K! i also have a fox-body 1985 mercury marquis (3.8l v6) with only 110,310 K Love it as well.....And to be honest this car is in GREAT Shape for an 87....this car is worth more then the 100 dollars ...Honestly for a long time i have known how the car business works and car dealers Are always Cheap when it comes to trade in,s
Don't forget that this video is nearly four years old... There has been a lot of fading of the paint. It seems like the clearcoat disintegrates in the sun, leaving the dull layer of paint sticking through it...
Yes, Austria. I could have used that in the five facts :)
What I really like about my car is the visibility. You can see all four corners from the driver's seat so it's easy to park. You sit up high and look down at the dash and hood...
Wasn't there a version of the 1984-1988 Chrysler radio where instead of the small, futuristic numbers for the digital clock, it featured the larger numbers from the 1989-1994 Chrysler radio?
I own a 1987 Plymouth Caravelle 2.2 engine. A former roomate was going to junk it because it didn't run, so I got the computer module from a junk yard. I paid about $8.00 for the car. (Transfer fees.) It has some rust, but runs very nice.
i have a 1980 caravelle 2 door , factory balck with dark red interior . i removed the origonal engine [6 cyl ] and put in a stroked bigblock with aluminum stage 6 max wedge heads and an M1 race intake doom . makes a bit more power than the old ''buzzin half dozen'' lol .
That must be a blast to drive! I keep thinking of modifications that would make my car a perfect sleeper, but I'm broke and I just need good reliable transportation. These are excellent cars, built with proven parts and engineering. I need to make it last a good long time...
i had an 86 caravelle same color same car i only paid 100$ and ran it for 3 years no major problems.i sold it and the guy still has it.i drive a saturn now man do i ever miss it!lean mean 318..
The odometer reads 32854 now (I had to go outside and check) and is running strong on premium (pings on regular) but this old girl is a keeper! I'll still be driving this one ten years from now with routine maintenance should I live so long. I just can't justify (or afford) payments on something new and inferior. Should I fit a new four-barrel and dual
My truck is a 1992 Mazda B2600i. It has 123,300 Miles at present. I bought it w/117,600 miles from the 2nd owner who took extremely good care of it because he collected european sports cars. It has a fuel injected 2.6L I4 That was a Mazda-Mitsubishi hybrid design (Mazda had a joint venture with Mitsubishi for a while).
That car was famous in america as a dodge diplomat police car. I beleive the last car of that type made in america was called the chrysler Le Barron fifth avenue. They were good cars. The station wagon version had a very loyal following for many years in america. It's what the AMC fans switched to when AMC when down the tubes.
My mothers parents had a 1969 rambler for many years till it finally died in the eighties. THey then switched to a plymouth similar to yours. I liked the upolstery in their plymouth. It was light grey-blue shiny satin-ish cloth upolstery...reminded me of old '50s model cars. THeir's didn't have armrests like yours. Just a plain straight bench seat...not split.
Yes, mine has the Salon interior. I would have liked leather like my '80 New Yorker had. The top was lizard grain vinyl in the back and stainless steel in front of
the trim tiara. I never should have sold that one...
Hey i love the video, i am 18 from toronto and i can't wait to post a video of my fathers caravelle if i get the know how, it is also an 87, a blue one, mint condition, 170,000 clicks, i will be taken it over some year soon but right now i live in windsor, ontario and i see lots of caravelles and fifth aves, u know where to get parts for the caravelle? i find them rare to come by
Man I havent seen one of those in years... They were sheriff cars where I'm from,, Great music btw <g> sorry just havent made that for ya yet but I will.
Police forces everywhere back then used Plymouths and Dodges simply because they were better cars than the Fords or Chevys. That was the Popa Chubby version of "No Money Down" for those of you who don't know what we're talking about...
Cool ride. In 1987 I was in the car business and owned part of a Chrysler Plymouth Dodge dealership in a tiny little town in north Georgia. We sold that car as a Chrysler Fifth Avenue and Dodge Diplomat. In 87 Plymouth didn't have a US version and I think the platform was replaced by the new front drive New Yorker in 1988. -jim
I had an 87 Gran Fury....its the exact same car. Either way those are some tough ass cars.

All of my cars were from older people as well. Both cars were purchased for less than $4,000, and both have less than 33,000 miles on them EACH. The Aspen has most of the original paint, and the Cordoba has ALL original paint.
JarrodES13 3 years ago
Wow! Those are some good finds... I also had a 1980 New Yorker with a 360 once... It gave me many years of trouble free service, and I could kick myself for selling it...
fehquig 3 years ago
Kenosha made all those great AMC's too :)
johnreagannumber1 3 years ago
This car is a keeper. I've had it for almost seven years, which is the second-longest time I've ever kept a car...
It definitely is nimble and light, a total joy to drive! There is no comparison to the Crown Vics that I spend too much time in, in fact I'm sitting in a Crown Vic now!
Mine is the Civilian model. I could easily modify it to Police Pack specs, but why mess with what is already a good thing? LOL
fehquig 3 years ago
A Mopar is a Mopar! Rear drive is having a strong comeback. How do you feel about the new Challenger? I think it's a step in the right direction but seeing it in person it missed all that I loved about the original which was low and wide with thin pillars. Hope I don't offend anyone but since cars are now over 2.5 inches taller, it looks like an SUV next to the original lol ... I'd still love to have it.
Thing is I saw the dashboard on the thumbnail and I'd love to do a video for you :)
johnreagannumber1 3 years ago
The new Challenger is a cartooney caricature of the original just like what the New Beetle is to the old VolksWagen. A 340 Dart with a 4-Speed is more my style :) Why they built things like the K-Car beats me...
Do you need any of my dashboard footage to make this video of yours? :)
fehquig 3 years ago
Great way to put it regarding the Challenger/Beetle. My uncle had a brand new 1980 Fifth Avenue in Beige, gorgeous opera lights as you know :) Loved the Imperial. Had an 81 Cordoba too with a faux convertible top in white! Slant 6 however.
K-Cars did save Chrysler from bankruptcy but there's no way those ads at the time that said a 4 cylinder turbo was as smooth and fast as a V8 lol. The country was in a crappy recession though.
johnreagannumber1 3 years ago
And the response I will have for you has dash footage, albeit a very beat up dash! It was my personal 1981 Lebaron that I'd like to share with you :)
johnreagannumber1 3 years ago
LOL I'm looking forward to it!
fehquig 3 years ago
My Fifth Avenue was black with a stainless steel top, lizard tone vinyl around the backlite and C-pillars, and the 360, converted to run on propane. The interior was all tan leather.
I wish I still had it, but I sold it for gas and food money on a drive to California in my 3/4 ton Suburban that I had set up for sleeping in... That was a damn good trip!

i got a 1987 5th ave 318 4bbl i got four $350 go to stardust0779 to see on youtube
StarDust0779 3 years ago
Great video, man. I love the car. I don't think it's an 'old folks' car... but it definitely has it's own small populace of people who like it.
ScottXL 3 years ago
The model is developing a kind of cult following as the last of a breed of rear wheel drive Chrysler products with torsion bar suspension up front and leaf springs in the rear. All I was looking for when shopping for a good used car was a proven product that was tough so that it would last long, cheap to buy, and cheap to repair because I was and still am broke. I think the New Yorker variant is the ultimate old guy's car. The younger crowd goes more for Cadillacs and Lincolns of the '80s...
fehquig 3 years ago
the younger crowd doesnt understand the importance of muscle cars and rwds like me and you do. theyre riding around in 130hp hondas that they call badass while i cruise around in a 300hp Dart with low gears and the power to smush them bastards. as for being broke, alot of us are nowadays. and 318s are great great motors

i have a diplomat, a lot like your caravelle, buti accidentally shovved a 440 into it.

Did you have to strengthen the body to handle the extra torque?
fehquig 3 years ago
Nice ride, check out my gran fury on my vids.. I checked the writing on the door and it said 3 83 which means march 1983. nice
tipetu 3 years ago
Yes it was the Gran Fury, the New York City Police Department used them for years. The Dodge version is the Diplomat.
2008ljr 3 years ago
The Diplomat was also marketed in Canada through Dodge dealers. Why the Plymouth version has a different name depending on what country it was sold in beats me. We had the Fury from the fifties through the seventies in Canada...
fehquig 3 years ago
The Caravelle was an enlarged k car variant in the us.
Lumotaku 3 years ago
What fun I had when I went into an auto parts store in Chicago asking for a power steering hose for an '87 Caravelle :)
fehquig 3 years ago
Dont ask me. Do canadian cars have the same exact emission equipment as Us ones.
Lumotaku 3 years ago
As far as I know, they do...
fehquig 3 years ago
Well just for moneys sake you would think they did but if they waste money by switching names who knows.
Lumotaku 3 years ago
Well, mine is a Caravelle Salon. I imagine the K-car based machine is a Caravelle but not a Salon. They should have just called it a Fury. The Plymouth Fury was well-known for something like twenty years...
fehquig 3 years ago
Did the 1986-89 Dodge Diplomat and Plymouth Gran Fury base models still use the scary buzzer or just a chime?
Jac2Mac 2 years ago
Mine has the chime if that's any indication...
fehquig 2 years ago
hey by the way do you like k cars as in dodge aries and Plymouth reliant
jakesaintsrow123 2 years ago
I prefer Chryslers with torsion bars in the front, rear wheel drive, and V8s or Slant Sixes...
I once had a choice between an Olds Omega and a Dodge 600 at the same price. I needed a cheap used car for getting from A to B, no frills. I chose the Olds and drove it for a couple of years with no troubles...
The V6 sold me when compared to the four banger...
fehquig 2 years ago
nice what year was the dodge 600 i have a 1988 dodge 600 4 door sedan with 2.2l turbo i love it
jakesaintsrow123 2 years ago
I believe it was an '85, but that was nine or ten years ago. Maybe it was a better car than the Omega...
fehquig 2 years ago
what Year of dodge 600 was it? Omegas were also Great cars! i have the Buick version! 1985 Buick skylark! Mines Mint ...i Love it!
jakesaintsrow123 1 year ago
It was an '83 or '84.
fehquig 1 year ago
the 600 was either a 83 or 84? did it have the carburated 2.2l chrysler motor? or the carburated 2.6l Mitsubishi Motor? if it was an 83 then it Lacked the Wrap around Rear tail-Lamps! 84-Later models had the wrap-around rear tail-lamps....so did 1984-Later chrysler new yorkers and Lebarons! ..so if it lacked wrap-around tail lamps then it was an 83 Model!
jakesaintsrow123 1 year ago
I don't remember... It was something like eleven years ago :)
fehquig 1 year ago
My mother had an '85 Skylark back in 1990. It was stolen... Now she's driving my old Plymouth...
fehquig 1 year ago
Oh Yeah! was it any good? Mines been AWESOME! drives and runs Like its brand new! but it was pampered for 25 years by the original Owners! i Love it! only 155,000 Original K! i also have a fox-body 1985 mercury marquis (3.8l v6) with only 110,310 K Love it as well.....And to be honest this car is in GREAT Shape for an 87....this car is worth more then the 100 dollars ...Honestly for a long time i have known how the car business works and car dealers Are always Cheap when it comes to trade in,s
jakesaintsrow123 1 year ago
Don't forget that this video is nearly four years old... There has been a lot of fading of the paint. It seems like the clearcoat disintegrates in the sun, leaving the dull layer of paint sticking through it...

Ah, your parents are from Austria!
I like the design of these old US cars ... I grew up in a time when a lot of US soldiers lived in my area and they had cars like this.
Hehe, the beer sticker is awesome, haha
BattlefieldDoktor 4 years ago
Yes, Austria. I could have used that in the five facts :)
What I really like about my car is the visibility. You can see all four corners from the driver's seat so it's easy to park. You sit up high and look down at the dash and hood...
Beer sticker... Yeah.

yeah the parking thingy ... some modern cars are not very good about this

Wasn't there a version of the 1984-1988 Chrysler radio where instead of the small, futuristic numbers for the digital clock, it featured the larger numbers from the 1989-1994 Chrysler radio?
Jac2Mac 4 years ago
The answer to that one is beyond me.

I own a 1987 Plymouth Caravelle 2.2 engine. A former roomate was going to junk it because it didn't run, so I got the computer module from a junk yard. I paid about $8.00 for the car. (Transfer fees.) It has some rust, but runs very nice.
PreacherSly 4 years ago
Did the 1987 Plymouth Caravelle ever come with the classic buzzer or just a chime?
Jac2Mac 4 years ago
i have a 1980 caravelle 2 door , factory balck with dark red interior . i removed the origonal engine [6 cyl ] and put in a stroked bigblock with aluminum stage 6 max wedge heads and an M1 race intake doom . makes a bit more power than the old ''buzzin half dozen'' lol .

That must be a blast to drive! I keep thinking of modifications that would make my car a perfect sleeper, but I'm broke and I just need good reliable transportation. These are excellent cars, built with proven parts and engineering. I need to make it last a good long time...
fehquig 4 years ago
i had an 86 caravelle same color same car i only paid 100$ and ran it for 3 years no major problems.i sold it and the guy still has it.i drive a saturn now man do i ever miss it!lean mean 318..

The odometer reads 32854 now (I had to go outside and check) and is running strong on premium (pings on regular) but this old girl is a keeper! I'll still be driving this one ten years from now with routine maintenance should I live so long. I just can't justify (or afford) payments on something new and inferior. Should I fit a new four-barrel and dual
exhaust to it someday? Maybe I'm dreaming...
fehquig 4 years ago
actually parts are easy to find for the motor and i had duals on mine and it sounds really nice.ill try to see if i can find a picture

I love how the chime in this 87 Plymouth is not depressing sounding compared to the 87 Mercury Grand Marquis where it is depressing sounding.
Jac2Mac 4 years ago
I always appreciate automobiles with uplifting sound
effects, but I chiefly bought the old Plymouth because
it was cheap at the time and I had to get rid of that
fucking 1964 Cadillac that was draining my pocketbook!!!
fehquig 4 years ago
That car is in excellent condition, especially for a 1987. It looks better than my 2000 Honda Passport... which needs a bath in the worst way.
curt344 4 years ago
That car was famous in america as a dodge diplomat police car. I beleive the last car of that type made in america was called the chrysler Le Barron fifth avenue. They were good cars. The station wagon version had a very loyal following for many years in america. It's what the AMC fans switched to when AMC when down the tubes.
LoomisLoftis 4 years ago
I took it to the shop yesterday. It was supposed to be ready at the end of the day. It's still there. One of
my brake calipers seized so I went to get it replaced.
The warehouse sent the part for the front wheel drive
model. My mechanic said he sent it back and ordered the
one for a Diplomat. The cars are identical except for the nameplate...

LoomisLoftis 4 years ago
Yes, mine has the Salon interior. I would have liked leather like my '80 New Yorker had. The top was lizard grain vinyl in the back and stainless steel in front of
the trim tiara. I never should have sold that one...

Hey i love the video, i am 18 from toronto and i can't wait to post a video of my fathers caravelle if i get the know how, it is also an 87, a blue one, mint condition, 170,000 clicks, i will be taken it over some year soon but right now i live in windsor, ontario and i see lots of caravelles and fifth aves, u know where to get parts for the caravelle? i find them rare to come by
westsider1911man 5 years ago
There are lots of them in the recycling yards in Vancouver, but the best place I found for getting body
parts is Phoenix, Arizona. Mechanical parts should be
easily available since they made lots of 318's with the
Torqueflite transmission...

Police forces everywhere back then used Plymouths and Dodges simply because they were better cars than the Fords or Chevys. That was the Popa Chubby version of "No Money Down" for those of you who don't know what we're talking about...
fehquig 5 years ago
-jim
CountryComesToTown 5 years ago
I think they still put a few together for our market back then. When I was car shopping, I was looking for a Fifth
Avenue because I had been silly enough to sell my '80 Fifth
Avenue a few years earlier. The Plymouth is plain compared to a FA, but this one was so nice that I
couldn't resist...
