  • Lyrics?

  • Whenever I heard the "lonely island" line, tears come to my eyes. Her love for the country was great!

  • Much better than new songs these days.

  • when listening to this song, thinking of my dad

  • I knew this was by Zhou Xuan! Her voice has something very distinct and unique to it.

  • @desertcat08 May I ask why would Zhou Xuan's songs in Chinese be broadcast in Japan after WW2? For my curiosity, why would there be such a concentration of Chinese children to warrant the operation of a Chinese school ( 中華學校 ) in 橫濱?

In the 1960's, our parents' generation still had vivid memories of the horror & sufferings caused by Japan's aggressive invasion of China, they wouldn't eagerly work in Japan & send their children to a school there unless they had to!

  • @soulglow8 It was not broadcasted via radio or TV in Japan, rather, it was a record album given to me from a friend of mind. The Chinese school in Yokohama, Japan that I went to was essentially for the education of Chinese children of overseas Chinese parents (華僑), so that they would learn Japanese, Chinese Mandarin, and English. By the way, the school was located right in the heart of Yokohama Chinatown, and it's still there now.

  • @desertcat08 Thank you very much for your reply. It must have been a good school! Was it funded privately by the Chinese parents? Did the Japanese government fund it fully or partially?

I'm glad to know that the Japanese leadership allowed such a school to exist at that time. I don't think China allowed Japanese to be taught in any public school after WW2. A few international schools existed only for the children of the foreign diplomats & business community, where English was taught.

  • @desertcat08 The most effective ways to achieve peace & goodwill among peoples of different countries is to encourage the understanding, respect & appreciation of each other`s language & culture.

Later, singers & actors who were admired in both Japan & China (e.g. Li XiangLan, Teresa Teng…) have contributed to dissolving some prejudice, misunderstanding & hatred among the 2 peoples.

  • @soulglow8 I agree with you wholeheartedly! :)

  • @desertcat08 Zhou Xuan, whose music would have enchanted the Japanese nationals while they were in China before the end of WW2, might have inspired some neutralizing effect on the induced hostility between the 2 citizenry. What do you think?

  • @desertcat08 Hi Desertcat! I am curious about your experiences growing up in Yokohama Chinatown. I'm currently researching the history of Yokohama. I met some people who attended the Yamate school, but not Chûka gakuin in Yamashita-cho. Do you know anybody who was a student there in 1952?

  • @benkei242 I was only there for a year to attend my last year of high school in the mid 60's. Since I have had no contact with my former classmates upon my graduation from that school, I am afraid that I am unable to help you with your request, sorry!

  • by 1946, the war is over. The Chinese people at last has some peace but nation is in turmoil...............how sad were the Chinese people at that time but their spirit is strong as ever. May the modern China be strong and no nation ever dare to invade this holy land again.

  • i'm 17 years old and i'm really hoping that people my age can listen to these 老歌 more. the last century china has really been a mess and it looks as if this generation we are about to just throw away the cultural legacy left behind.

  • @comehereformusic totally agree!!

  • @comehereformusic I'm in the same boat, double thumbs up

  • Thank you very much.

  • Best of Zhou Xuan!!!

Thank You Very Much For Sharing.

  • To the violin players of the world, the vibrato separates a good player from a mediocre one. Listen to Zhou Xuan's vibrato, especially in this clip, you will see why she stood above all other singers of her time.

  • err I don't completely agree to that.. (first part)

  • Hello. Does anyone know the meaning of "Bing Xue Yang de Cong Ming" in the lyrics? Why did the composer use Ice and Snow to describe cleverness?

Can someone interpret it for me please?

    Zhou Xuan

  • Probably because it is clear and white...

  • clever and smart, used to decorate a sweet girl~~.

Snow white you know, and clever plus.

  • She was pretty

  • Looks great!Thanks!

  • so beautyfull... soul stirring T_T

  • I'd heard her songs n like most of them very much. Finally I got a chance to see her real person here. Thanks for sharing! :-D

  • Thanks for sharing these videos. I grew up in HK with her songs, this is the first time I actually see how she looked like. I felt like a little kid again. You would not know how homesick I feel right now, especially on this Chinese New Year Day. Thanks again, have a great year.

  • hao ge !

  • Thanks "hkbbs", this is Awesome.

  • This song always touches my heart! T_T

  • This song always touches my heart T_T

  • In 1950 Chou Shuen was in HK and healthy. She returned to Shanghai coz fell in communist propaganda, Few years later news told that she was sick and DIED. Who caused her death?

  • You are 100% correct. If she would have remained in Hong Kong she could have lived longer.

  • but HK was so poor back then and maybe she was a bit home sick too anyway what a poor woman

  • When she actually sang this song, it was at her life's turning point, whereby she was so devastated that she fell into depression.

  • Zhou Xuan's 50th death anniversary is this year's September 20th. There will be a "Tribute to Zhou Xuan"

on 8th september, here in Singapore at the Esplanade. Tickets on sale at all sistic outlets. Please support!!

  • Look at her. In 1946 she was still so young and lovely. But 10 years later she died in Shanghai under the hand of communists.

  • Anyway, she died on 22 September 1957, officially due to brain encephalitis.

  • I love this song very much ^_^

  • Thanks for sharing! Love it!

  • a lot of people probably heard this first from wong kar-wai's movie
