Well go get jello, cut it up, get a white background and floor, throw it around. Is it interesting? Not really.

But recreating this on a computer is amazing. It looks polished and perfect. Something you usually wont get inrl.

first off make the cubes have more of a polygon count, i can tell that each one is 12, also luving the cuastics, would look much better if as i said abve the cubes had more itterations

12 poly means 6 sqaure faces, which is demonstrated above. a polgon is a triangle in this case, you can use nurbs but thats completly different. by using lest say 10 square faces per side, 20 polygons per side, it bcomes  much more dynamic. however to many of these and it starts to liquify if you will.

They arent really shadows. they are caustic reflections of light. I.e how the light that travels through the cube refracts and gets coloured. You have to use Yafray to produce caustic reflections and you need to use photon lights. I think there is a feature in the new version of blender that supports this but the results are actually really bad.
