Thank-you Dr. King for not only sharing your dream with us, but for also sharing your life. You are loved and dearly missed. And even though I never heard any of your speechs live; I am living proof of your dream.
Thank-you Dr. King for not only sharing your dream with us, but for also sharinh your life. You are loved and dearly missed. And even though I never heard any of your speechs live; I am living proof of your dream.
No fan of Obama by any stretch of the imagination (this song was made for a "Yes We Can" album in 08), but this is truly a beautiful cover. When I heard part of this for the first time, it almost sounded like Bruce Springsteen.
What a great man... This song really does him justice. His charisma comes across even just from the few quotes in the video. Pity he had to die like that :S
Bono had to be bursting with "Pride" with this awesome rendition. So am I as a follower of the philosophies of the martyr equality, peace, love, and human rights the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Great job Mr. Legend!
@mdelandro The original U2 version is on "The Unforgettable Fire" (1984) and this version is on "Yes We Can: Voices of a Grassroots Movement" by Various Artists (2009) - iTunes Store has this version as an individual purchase, on Amazon MP3 it's "album only."
Alot of ppl forget wat life is about. Sharing, helping others, and treating others the way u want to b treated. Back in the old days, if u were black, u hv to do things the way u dont want to do it, i mean like, in a bad way. We all hv a purpose in lufe, and thts y GOD made us. Not to kill, not to hate, but to love. Try to understand tht if u dont like someone,( i know we all do) keep it to urself. Did u c tht Martin Luther King was shot? Thts called hatred. We r not supposed to kill aomebody j
I'm sure he DOES know who originally wrote/sang it, pokabeb. But regardless, he does do a very beautiful job singing/playing it. A nominee for the "best video version ever" of the song!
But then it should be "early morning, April 5th." Also, it would have been 12:01 am in Ireland, technically still early morning, but probably not what you were getting at. It was more likely just a mistake; it's not really a big deal.
Now I can understand the neg reaction to my comments. I am in fact a U2 fan, but only of their early work. I don't think they've put out anything good in a long time. But I don't like Bono's voice though. Bob Dylan also has a terrible voice, but he's the best songwriter in the last 100 years. Not sayin Bono sucks
interesting how this song is used for martin luther king, and is also used to support obamas campaign, on purpose? either way its an incredible version, i think better than U2
Martin Luther King Jr. there is no words to define the stance he & many took up for the unserved, the poor, the voiceless, being a part of Gen Y his lessions are and will always be relevant to me b/c in order to perfect what we know is right, justice and humane we have to start with the core aspect of "Love". MLK love thy neighbor as thyself & that is the reason his lessions live on. This song is so poignant, beautiful thank you John Legend & many others who have sang this song. MLK = LOVE.PEACE!!
I so agree, it's like you sense something bigger than life itself happening, you don't know what it is but you just feel it and this song is so poignant at a time when we are celebrating Martin Luther King Jr's day today and then the innaugration of Barack Obama and the massive movement of a people - it comes around once in a lifetime and I'm happy to be in the moment. U2 wrote this song back in 1984and its so relevant today, beautiful words, beautiful song. Peace
MLK is a great inspiration for every people in every country. MLK is one of my heroes and every time I hear U2's song I shiver, just like the world did today for Obama. MLK gave us the strengh to dream and it won't fade.
katykatfandesmetal I know,I watch U2 sang the song at the Lincoln Memorial on HBO & it brought tears to my eyes b/c of the relevance of that song with what happened today for The U.S.A. (Pres. Obama)& the World Community. Its like renewing of a nation and we hope the world community will accept the apology of what happpen the last 8 yrs b/c it wasn't a representaion of the people of the U.S.A MLK is one of my heroes as well & I wish he was alive to see the Civil Rights ERA was not invane. Peace
As a mxican american... i am a true believer of Dr. King... u2 set the song up and revolutionized music and john legend just helps justify it... barack obama will help this country bring it to what it truly needs it to be... thinking of it brings true tears in my eyes....
i have all of john legends stuff. i bought his new cd just because this is on there when you get it at wal mart. its like an exclusive track...amazing version of this song.
2:21 -- I'm glad he changed the "Early morning, April 4..." line, because King was shot and killed more in early evening, or "late afternoon," as Legend sings here. I had long waited for Bono to change that when he sings it, but he hasn't.
@mykalroze Very observant. Actually, in every live performance since The Vertigo Tour (2005), Bono has sung "Early evening, April 4" to correct this, including the live performance at Obama's inauguration. As far as the studio version, they agreed It would be pretty outlandish to try to edit a 1984 recording of a legendary song, so they left it.
hIS VOICE IS SO TRAINED i IDOLISE THIS PERFORMANCE SHAMELESSLY! I THINK MLK IS SMILING ON US IN OUR PLIGHT TO TO EXIST AS MEN...FREE AND CIVILIZED AS A ONCE AGAIN GREAT RACE OF PEOPLE...KEEP MOVING!
That God keeps this man who knew how to defend the civil rights of the blacks in the United States and who will have influenced the whole world and also the heart of every man on this earth
Such a fantastic rendition - I like it as much or more than the original. Legend's voice is perfect for this song. MLK rest in peace - May your message of noble vindication resonate forever.

It makes sense considering the line "Early morning, April 4
Shot rings out in the Memphis sky
Free at last, they took your life
They could not take your pride"
Is about King's assassination. Furthermore how does U2 goes from writing something great like that to "Get on your boots"
