Do a Google search on "1.5 1010 years age of the universe" and you will see that many scientists now say that the universe is only 1.5 times 1010 years old. @lo2enge If they took the trouble to look at the polls, they would see that they actually only make up only around 12% of the population, about the same for Atheists and Agnostics, and and that figure is growing, unlike the fundamentalists figure which is fairly static.
Also, the poll results just show the ones who admitted to being atheist, as to be an atheist in the “land of free speech” is still social and economic suicide in some areas. I expect the real figure is much higher.

@lo2enge Actually, It's interesting. you would be hard pressed to find any member of the Senate and House of Representatives who don't openly declare their christianity, but I heard that the results a recent anonymous survey of both houses estimated that at least a third are either atheist or at least agnostic.
The pollsters suggested that it was probably more than that, but they believed that some of the members, even with a guarantee of anonymity, would still be very reluctant to admit it.

@coolvideo28 I didn't say I agreed with the Chinese system, I definitely don't. But for the average chinese citizen, life is getting better. Slowly, I admit, but steadily.
Through our charity work, my wife and I have met a lot of chinese, who, while not happy with communism, are still proud of their country's achievements.

Exactly what would happen in America if the Christian right ever got real political power, because, as history has shown us over and over again, that is what fundamentalist Christian governments have always done, when given half a chance. Not only is it what christian governments have always done, it is the very reason for the existence of the United Sates in the first place. The pilgrim fathers were seeking to escape persecution from european theocratic governments, because their beliefs were not the same as those being forced upon them by their native country. Secularism is the only system that allows people to hold their own beliefs. We do not seek to persecute the religious, we are liberating them

I can understand clinging to the past in abject fear of the future, with all the attendant baggage of outmoded thinking and clinging to tradition that entails, but Jesus' message was so obviously opposed to the philosophies of the right-wing (and even capitalism) it often makes me wonder if those who espouse both have actually read the whole thing themselves. @lo2enge It's because the bible is the most ambiguous book written, so it is great for allowing you to act in any murderous or callous way you want to and still feel good about yourself because god authorised it.
Isaac Asimov once said:

@HonestMan395 Yup, good old Isaac was spot on with that one. I also agree about Jesus being a socialist (but i was running out of character allowance, and wanted to finish on some sort of point of impact).
Jesus' message was a great one, of caring, kindness and human inclusion... and yes... secularism., it's just a shame it has been corrupted by inclusion in the bible, and by generations of morally bankrupt grasping capitalists, imagining belief and church attendance to substitute good deeds.

They are very frightened people, so they hang on to anything for safety.
Putting your faith and life into the hands of an imaginary celestial friend is the ultimate cop-out from taking any responsibilty for your own life.It's a huge comfort blanket. I suspect you, like me, know some happy, secure and intelligent theists (who are so by dint of their upbringing, no special revelation involved) for whom when they see scientific evidence that conflicts with their beliefs, examine those beliefs and modify them accordingly. This is how faith should be treated. To accept the writings of a 2k year old text as being more trustworthy than the work of thousands of scientists today is incomprehensible to me

@lo2enge I was brought up in a christian family and most of them are still christians. In fact, of my three brothers-in-law, only one is an atheist. One is a Roman Catholic counsellor, the other is a Retired Church of England vicar.
As well as fellow atheists, I know lots of christians, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, and many other faiths members, but none are as fanatical as people like Coolvideo The USA is so isolated physically from the rest of the world and they have become very insular. Cont’d

@lo2enge Their knowledge of the world is minimal. Most Americans Don't even have a passport and are born, live and die without ever having been outside their country, even for a holiday.
I lived in America in 1980 and even though my world knowledge then was nowhere near what it is today, I was amazed, not only at their naivety of the world, but the complete lack of interest in knowledge other than for making money of people I met and worked with. Cont’d

@lo2enge If Jesus was true, then his message was one of the greatest good for the greatest numbers and everybody helping their fellows. He also was not into condemning anyone other than those who condemned people themselves.
He was not just a liberal, he was the ultimate socialist.
The religious right are praying for his return. If I were them, I would be keeping quiet, hoping he doesn’t come back, because if he saw what they have done to his message, they would be destined straight to hell

@coolvideo28 Again, if you think the USA is a christian country, then compared with the other SECULAR western democracies, it has the highest crime rate, including the highest murder rate by far.
The highest infant mortality rate, the highest teenage pregnancy rate and the highest divorce rate.
Personally I would rather live in a country that looks after it's citizens rather than sends them to the wall with callous disregard. But then, that's the American brand of christianity for you.

U couldnt be farther from the truth when we speak of murder rate U speak of individauls killing other individuals yes the Govt ripped the Bible & prayer out of our Schools so satan is moving in kids shooting up schools because they are lied 2 & taught they evolve & R just animals w/ no consequences. @coolvideo28 The usa isn't a christian nation in the same way indonesia isn't an islamic nation. It is (supposedly, at least) secular, as stated in your constitution... its founders having learned the lessons of theocracy the hard way and vowed for their own new country not to descend into the same trap.

@coolvideo28 What rights are liberals trying to attack? I am a liberal, we are pretty hot on upholding rights. Including the rights of children to avoid exposure to dogma masquerading as truth at a vulnerable age. I would never dream of telling someone what they should believe. Actions are different, obviously. So are known facts. When it comes down to science the prevailing contemporary consensus of knowledge from scientists is the only thing that belongs in the science classroom.

@coolvideo28 Believe this or not, i have nothing against what you personally wish to believe. As a secularist, i support freedom of religion.. as far as it is personal. The moment it impinges on other humans' rights, whether the right to a decent education or the right to remove a blastocyst, than it needs to be addressed and put into its place. I have many theistic friends. My girlfriend is a deist. My ex, whom i talk to often, is a practising moslim. They are secular too, so there's no problem

Actually, they are not.
Gallup polls from 1948 to 2008 show that Christian belief in America has dropped in that time from 91% to 77%, and it is still falling.
That doesn't mean Regular church going christians, (that figure is much lower) just people who expressed a christian belief.
in the same time Atheism has risen from 2% to 12% and is rising rapidly.

Talk to God whenever you want 24/7 if you want in 1 year I guarantee you will be a new person you will see the truth in most things and see through lies much easier. In fact they invented most of them for use on people who did not conform to their beliefs.

I can’t find where you said this, but if you did, it is totally wrong.
My wife and I work for a major international charity and I can state as a matter of fact that most world charities are deliberately Non-religious. This enables them to work in all countries of the world, without being seen as partisan.

@HonestMan395 Next time you go to a natural disaster or some emergency or terrorist attck to volanteer if you do look around and ask around you will see how many of them are Christians and you will be shocked. just because they are not wearing a t-shirt that says Iam a Christian doesnt mean there not a Christian or Christian organisation they are usualy the 1st ones on scene and the last ones to leave and we actualy provide real help while the govt messes everything up when they finaly arive.

It sickens me when I see christians putting themselves on a pedestal when it comes to morality and ethics.
I have lived for 66 yrs and the most honest, ethical and quietly moral people I have ever met have all been Atheists.
Christians only think they are, because of their own overrated high opinion of themselves.
