  • My dad drove these trucks from the early 60's onward for about 30 years. I can't believe how hard they worked back in the day! I grew up around truckers during this time. They were real men!

  • @smacdiesel

Agreed - most truckers today couldn't begin to handle the 22" muscle wheel grossing 72+ on an old 2 lane blacktop road hauling a loaded possium belly of cattle. My dad used to have to sit me on the dog house of an 64 Emeryville for he was afraid I would go sailing out the window bouncing around a curve at 60MPH, while he is standing on the floor board pulling that wheel around the curve. I loved to watch my dad drive and now my brother, he has the same gift of a real trucker!

  • Did trucks have A/Cs back then?

  • @rudge1982

    yes they did.

  • I can't stop watching this and thinking about how much fun grandpa had when he drove all kinds of TRUCKS with Detroit Diesel 2 cycle engines back in the good ol' days. Trucks that were a challenge to drive and had a distinctive and unique sound. Now I am a 4th generation trucker in this family and I can say that I do not like my truck with a silent engine and an automated-manual- IT'S BORING as HELL freezing-up.....

  • Not try'n to sound gay or nuthin but I got a lot of respect for the way you handle that rig driver.

  • @tedium37

It's a girl and she likes to be handled!

  • no radio on her

  • @starsixfilms

AM Radio factory equiped - I installed a Royce 1974 CB just for fun too.

  • most drivers dont know to keep the rpm up on a detroit but you got it. there used to 4 cycle diesels and dont understand, run it like a friken chainsaw, and as far as gears, the more the marrier!

  • no description needed! they named you well when you was called the doctor!

  • I love how he has keep turning the steering wheel like 10 times. haha. I dont know much about big rigs, but that was sick !

  • Whata ssound!. When im watching this video all i can think of is the Film Convoy.

  • Nice smooth shiftin my man, got love that 13, i drive 18 now, really dont need split bottom, unless heavy heavy, like movin a 400, 138,000lbs, 23yrs and i still love it, cant wait get up go to work, lol..thanx.

  • @DetroitDieselDoctor My dad says using the clutch to shift only wears out a clutch that much faster.

  • Sounds like she "walk on" the same way with about 40,000 lbs. on her back.

  • Just EXCELLENT Love watching that gear changing too Thanks guys

  • Such a sweet sounding rig, inside looks nice as well. Most steering wheel holders would have no clue how to shift let alone how to make it pull.

  • Niice steering wheel and niice sound ugh im 13 and trucks is my thing love the sound of a good detroit diesel

  • Very little clutch, or none? not sure?

  • @Thumper396396

The clutch was only used during starts and stops.

  • Beautiful truck and great shifting. Can't imagine the hearing damage from this being your office for 12 hour days six days a week. Still super sweet!

  • That Baby can talk to ya, just gouge her a little,!

  • @hanothekidd

No need to gouge her, she makes her own way when done right :-)

  • Nice old iron. That is a beautiful truck. History on wheels. Thanks for sharing it.

  • @Arclightmarksman

    Thank you!

  • @DetroitDieselDoctor

    All 22 inches of it!

  • Power steering by "Armstrong!"

  • sweet sweet sweet sweet sweet sweeet sweet

  • @westernstar4964

    Thank you

  • man i love the soud of that detroit

  • What a wonderful machine! I would love to drive one of those... how many cm3 does this engine have? Thanks for uploading the video!

  • @jigrodrigues How many What (cm3) does it have ??....Not sure what you meaning to ask....

  • there is always that one douche bag that has to dislike a awesome video like this.

  • very nice

  • How many mpg does your truck?

  • There drives a real pro !!!

  • Very Very clean and rattle free truck, Love it.

  • music to my ears.I could fall asleep to this.

  • @TheAmazingMikey - I have fallen asleep many times in my Dad's trucks listening to him shifting on the road, I swear my brother has the same gift as my dad when it comes to shifting and driving a truck, brings back those all those memorys of when I was a kid riding with dad, long before my brother was born.

  • sounds like you are shifting too late..

  • @snuffy525 - Not hardly snuffy525 if you get any faster you would be grinding gears like most idiots who have tried to drive an 'ol detroit like this one. See comments on shifting further down the list they know the difference.

  • awesome

  • Love that big ole white steering wheel too! This truck is a true Gem! WOW !

  • @busrailfan

  • Holy Cow If I Hadn't Read The Fact That This Is A 1967 Kenworth 318 Detroit I Would Swear This Thing Was A Race Car. This Truck Is Beautiful. Good Job Guys. Bet This Truck Is Alot Of Fun To Drive.

  • @desert122

Thank you for the great comments, I do love my truck, and the good thing is it's mostly original, only paint and replaced the chrome with stainless where I could.

  • @DetroitDieselDoctor Ok, egg on my face! But nice shifting, and with syncronizers shot that is a feat! And your brother doe´s make it look easy.

  • @DetroitDieselDoctor Ok, egg on my face, but he does make it look easy!

  • @1339LARS

I know, I wish I could shift as good as him, but I don't drive everyday either.

  • Wicked vid guys!! Truly great stuff, thanks!! Those old 2-stroke Detroits are some amazing engines! Their sound is legendary.

    What model Ken??

The model is a 925, thank you for the great comments

  • Thanks again!!

  • Please make some more videos!

  • music to my ears!!

  • Maximum overdrive! love the sound of this truck.

  • nice kw! jakes were invented by clessie cummins in the late 50s licensed to jacobs mfg co

  • @decontaminate

Beg to differ on that, Clessie invented the jake in 1931 and the jake brake didn't go into production until 1961. Here is a clip from Clessie's history...Although the Jacobs Engine Brake has been on the market since 1961, the need for it was terrifyingly demonstrated to its inventor Clessie L. Cummins, some thirty years earlier. In August of 1931, himself, Ford Moyer, and Dave Evans driving a Cummins diesel powered Indiana truck from...check the Jacob's Brake website for more

  • @ 3:52 damn right you gotta love it, amen man. love these Detroit motors. cat makes some good ones to.

  • thats damn sweet shifting, I guess its easy with a detroit diesel, it drops the revs very fast ?

Its realy a very nice truck combo you got there.

  • That is a RIG! Best WIshes!

  • It doesn't get much better then that, Sweet ol KW.

  • Love it! 2 stroke diesel with jake monstrous sound!

    Enjoyed it :)

  • The way the guy was steering at the beginning it looks like it has no power streering.

  • You're right, no power steering, all muscle on that 22" wheel...

  • @DetroitDieselDoctor

All i have to say is take good care of that truck.

And that Detroit Diesel sounds beautiful...it reminds me of that Western Star Semi-Truck with the Green Goblin face from that movie "Maximum Overdrive". LOL.

  • That trucks sounds awesome!

    Nice vid. Thanks for sharing!

  • you're welcome

  • Hey now wait a second here,,,in 1967 I don't think them Kwopper had Jakes...at least not for another 20 years or so. Nice bit of driving,I driven tractor fo almost 30 years and if you had used the clutch,I'd have thought your leg would be the size of Montana Muscle. God it has too be near 20 years since i last heard a Destroy- it >Great sound and nice work...Detroits,if thier not leaking or screaming, then theres a problem..LOL

  • it may have had a later model motor init

  • Nope, it has the original engine, I have the line sheet from the factory, all SN# match, including the bumper

  • @canadiantimberwolf1 My jake was installed at the KW Seattle factory, it's listed on my line sheet. This is from Jacobs Brake's website Although the Jacobs Engine Brake has been on the market since 1961, the need for it was terrifyingly demonstrated to its inventor Clessie L. Cummins, some thirty years earlier. The first production units for the Cummins NH series engines left the factory in 1961, followed shortly by a brake for the Detroit 71 series.

  • @DetroitDieselDoctor, That is amazing.Thank you for the information Detroit.Seriously I thought the Jake came out in the early 80s. That Detroit is my favorite, always has been,Also I see a comment about Armstrong steering,I drove Armstrong for about the fist 5 yearsof my 26 behind the wheel of tractor trailers.

  • einfach nur geil...super kläge!! toller truck.

  • My dad drove a '67 KW with a 318 in it. First semi he ever drove. He was working for a drywall company and it was a truck his boss bought. My dad learned to drive truck in that truck. Brings back memories.

  • Thanks Brian, hope it brought back good memories....

  • It did. Thanks.

  • No air brakes?

  • Why have air brakes when you have a Jake...

  • awesome vids of the ol k-whopper!! looks and sounds great.

  • Thanks 8v - It's a great time....

  • Thanks guys so much, this is the best 318 DDA video i've heard yet and what a nice looking tractor!Next video you'll have to add some weight and a steep hill and wow us even more! Again thank you, keep um coming,

    mark

  • Thank you Mark, my brother and I were mentioning that it would be nice to make a video pulling my SS Fruehauf van trailer. When we brought the trailer home a few years back I didnt have a camera with me, but the ol girl sounded real sweet pulling a few hills. This KW is all original except for the exterior paint and where I replaced the chrome with stainless. It was a great find!

    Bill

  • that is the cleanest 871 ive heard in a long long time, nice shifting too!

  • @wildtc listen here my friend i hate to bust your chops but a 318 Detroit IS NOT an 8-71. it is a 6V53. trust me on this because i have 6V53T in my 98 dodge pick-up

  • @MegaSk2009 Hate to bust your chops but 318 is the horsepower not the displacement. 8V71 motors are nicknamed 318 because of the HP. Props to you for putting a Detroit in your dodge!
