  • who cares? i like this better than cat stevens

  • wayne is such a liar he was in high school when father and son was being blasted on the radio with heavy rotation........if he as a rock musician was not aware of that song being out (b. 1961) then he is simply lying

  • This song is a total rip of Cat Steven's 'Father and Son'. Anyone who is a fan of this song obviously doesn't know a copy when they see one. It's about time these up to date bands started playing something original. These guys are so desperate for fame, they have taken someone elses song and tried to make it their own. Hello flaming lips, it's not gonna happen.

  • DUDE CAT STEVENS FATHER AND SON!!!!

haha I looked this song up to see if it was haha and then I saw your comment... awesome

  • he scares them with poop??? Lips are awesome...

  • the flaming lips are the most origional band out there! they dont sound like noone else!

  • SIMPLEMENTE MUSICOTES CSM....

  • I love reading the narrow minded comments on some of these music vids. Its all about opinion...no one is right or wrong...except me! So ha! Also wtf is soccer? We play football here sonny. And our football is played with feet, as the name suggests, not hands like the stupidly named American equivalent. "Eeeew Soccerball!" A.M. Erican

  • Cat Stevens? Are you there?

  • This comment is absurd....I love the Flaming lips, and I love Cat Stevens even more and they definitely have very different sounds. Are you deaf?

  • unfortunately the singing is very similar, while the music may be different

  • UN BUEN TEMA KSM... FEELING

  • I love the Flips, I believe it's a case of Cryptomnesia

  • Omg, what a rip off...

  • 'Father and Son', after hearing it a few times, (including the few live performance on Youtube), is very much a different song. This is a much faster, 'upbeat' song, although they have some shared lines. The subject matter is different as well. Wayne Coyne did grow up at the time the Cat Stephens song was popular, perhaps a sub-conscious throwback?

  • shut the fuck up 'soccer freak'. soccer fucking sucks dick and you suck too.

  • ever thought he's taking the piis in his clips by palying the same chord over & over?? you're an idiot SoccerFrk....

  • BUT!! theres not all similar,"I don't know where the sunbeams end, and the starlight begins It's all a mysteryyy", thats not on the Stevens song, neither the first part "I thought I was smart I thought I was right,I thought it better not to fight,I thought there was a virtue, in always being cool", This is the similar part "So it came time to fight I thought I'll just step aside, And that the time will prove you wrong" and its similar, not absolutly plagiarism, not parts dont fix in Stevens song

  • It's about as close to absolute plagiarism as you can get for two "original" songs.

Someone said a long time ago that if you put a few million monkeys in a room with typewriters, and gave them enough time, they would would end up with a work close to Shakespeare one day. Maybe this is what happened with the Lips and Flight Test only they came out with Farther and Son.

It might not have been intentional but it is what it is.

  • FLIGHT TEST!

  • Mispelled the title of the song on their own youtube channel?! accccccciiiiiddddddd

  • awesome...

  • true but they made lyrics for it. boyzone just sang the son

  • boyzone? lol kill yourself

  • You guys should check out Benjamin Button Thinks He's Radical... the Flaming Lips should provide the soundtrack!

  • Maybe if you call someone a rip-off, you should actually say who they're ripping off.

  • I can tell you who they ripped off. Father and Son by Cat Stevens... A total rip off of his song.

  • Well, what can i say, you are right, so i hate you cause i love Flaming Lips. But i still love them, i believe that maybe the rip was unintentional, maybe wayne got it in the subconscious, it happens, and maybe that's because Wayne listen to Stevens all his life, you know, like Oasis made an entire discography with only 2 song of the beatles XD. So its ok that you made us know about it.

But I insist, FL is stil the most original band, even before this. :>

  • right on!

  • This is almost father to son.

  • and the hat

    reminds me of cream

  • wayne said he didnt notice the similarities between the 2 songs,is is fucking stupid?

  • Seen them live. Best act ever! Brilliant performance, interact with the crowd very well. Genius is an understatement.

    Love these guys.

  • i thought it was fight test?

  • yesh it is

  • it might be called flight test because the official youtube one isnt veiwable to all countires

  • rofl it's funny how the song is spelled wrong on there own youtube channel :p

  • Someone was baked :)

  • Uh... isnt this song called "Fight Test" by the Flaming Lips... not Flight test

  • LOS AMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

    sheedisima kancion! ;)

  • flaming lips thanx 4 the mexico city gig was amazing !!!! WE LOVE YOU!!!

  • flaming fucking lips!!!!! ojala y volvieran a mexico 2,3,4,5,6 o las veces que sean!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! me lanzaria a donde fuera!!!! que gran banda!!!!.

  • gosh. i thot it was the same song..

  • A part of this song bears a striking resemblance to Cat Steven's 'Father and Son'..

  • You're right! Total rip! Still like this song though, just not as much.

  • omg that is a joke, i love the flaming lips (and cat stevens) but this is the first time I heard this song and it sounds so much like it. Tbh Father and Son is one of my least favourite Cat Stevens songs

  • un grupo tan chingon como este... mecai que si

    eduardo rocha

  • If I cry anymore I'm gonna explode!

  • sounds like cat stevens

  • he found a magical mud sprite on the ground which repelled away his enemy... good song.... come back

  • I miss you mIke you FUCKER!!!

  • O M G. this song is the best fucking song ever made.

  • Yeah, Yusef Islam thinks so too

  • i loveeeeeeeeee them! this is definitely in my top 3 flips songs.

  • These guys are magic fairy dust. They make me feel good to be human, which hard in these times.

  • wait what happened im confused y is he afraid of dirt

  • I ask myself the same question every time I watch this mv

  • I think it was horse shit. They were in a stable so yeah, makes sense, lol. Don't think the fat guy wanted horse shit in his face lol

  • In my opinion, the lyrics in this song are absolutely incredible. I only wish I could have the talent that these guys have.

  • this song is complely original and unique to "father and son" by cat stevens....just listen to the two different songs!..it may follow most of the same chord progressions.but that's where the similarities end.rhythm, cadence, vocals, bassline, moog synthesizer, all unique. this of all bands has no need to plagiarize.

  • a huevo banda vienen los flaming a mexico!!! ahi estaremos!

  • 3 SOUTH!!!!XD

  • it is fight test!

  • Fight Test?

  • yeah fight test for sure!

  • if anyone is listening to the lyrics, it's pretty obvious it's fight test, as well as reading the cd case.

  • rofl, yeah and since we're here, you could also look above the video. Last time I checked it's up there too.

  • no it says flight there.

  • haha, whoa, you're right. I guess I fail... hmm, that's awkward...

  • It's called 'fight test' douche, stop ruining the song

  • test

  • Are going to see them tonight! ^^,

  • Maybe im wrong, but im sure i read somewhere that they have to pay a certain amount of royalties from this song to cat stevens coz its suspiciously like father and son... but waaaay better of course! Love the Lips!!

  • yep, you are right, is the first song of the Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots album, fight test, great song, fucking awesome, YOU FUCKING ROCK LIPS!!

  • One of the top three intros in the history of music ever.

  • im pretty sure its called FIGHT test

  • yeah wtf is this "Flight Test" shit?

  • lol

  • probobly a joke

  • my favourite song from them

  • Agree

  • whats the deal with the stuff the loser picks up and puts in the big guys face?

  • What, you've never seen horse shit before?

  • Of course he has, every morning in the mirror. THANKS FOLKS, I'll be here all night!

  • this song is very bittersweet, uplifting and melancholy at the same time. i heard this song the other day when i was driving in my car, and it was sunny out, beautiful day, and i'm just thinking in my head, "life is very happy and very, very sad!"

  • this song Is great :)

  • Cat stevens is one of my favourite artists and has written some amaaaaazing songs, father and son is one of them. i like this song tho it is kind of a psychedelic version of father and son its kool.

oh and the whole hill sunset thing is absolutely stunning!!!

  • My daughter loves the Lips;)

  • nice one....what album is this on? Sry...n00b question I know, but I rly wanna know. Also, thnx 4 posting.

  • yoshimi

  • The Flamings Lips will always be the kings of the alternative scene.

  • i thought it was called fight test

  • right!

    fight test!

  • me too..

  • Yep, this definitely rips off "Father and Son." And usually, the original is better than the rip. However, in this case...Cat Stevens had a good melody/chord sequence but the lyrics, singing and arrangement just sound hackneyed to me. While it's a good melody, I think the Flaming Lips did something way more interesting with it than he did.

  • So where are the similarities to father and son???? Maybe a bit but not really!

  • I think they would have struggled to make it any more like 'Father and Son'. That said, I really do like this song!

  • Really?? I can't hear them?? So what are they???

  • uh, the melody?

  • ok ok ok....i actually compared them now but I don't think it was on purpose!

  • Wonderful song. I think they named it flight test for a joke!

  • man i miss 3 south.

  • man when the guy got pushed and go up wiht the mud, swinging his shoulders and stuff i was thinking he was about to kick some ass or something.

Man i felt for the guy at the end, didnt even hit back.

    Damn sophisticated bastard.

  • if by 'sophisticated' you mean vagina than yes he is

  • steven looks like he is high on crack!

  • good song but theyve copied father and son, still good song tho

  • they pay royalties to Cat. Wayne says that he didn't realize the similarities until they were pointed out to him.

  • fight flight kite whatever

  • chill ffs

  • great song.....then I saw the video..

  • The best part of the song is at 2:21 when he turns and smiles looking away from his bandmate. Great song.

  • does no one realize its fight test not flight test!?

    anyway great song. brilliant

  • I love Yoshimi !

  • Was this posted by the "official" Flaming Lips account? If so it's kinda funny that they spelled their own song name wrong :P

  • it was probably a moderator that fd it up...i just listen to the song and dont care too much about it...or anything :)

  • kinda sounds like father and son by cat stevens in some parts

  • It's meant to be either a parody or tribute, I think.

They had to pay royalties to him at some stage.

  • No, it wasn't consciously written to be similar to Father and Son. They do pay royalties, but Wayne insists that it's a coincedence.

  • GREAT SONG!

  • i love this song

    Greet for the movie

  • great

  • my favorite song is the yeah song

  • :) bye bye

  • nice

    ta chido

  • I LOVE IT

  • This is the song that got me listening to Flaming Lips-now they're one of my favorite bands!

  • Dude! He has a Bam Margera mad bomber hat! lol

I frakin love this song :)

  • So what just happened in the music video? Was the mud supposed to represent like..a gun or a knife or something? I mean..even the guy in the background was scared of the mud..

  • They're in a barn or stable. I don't think it's mud. Looks like shit to me.

  • if the world was right-side-up...

wayne surely would've been uncontestedly named "sexiest man of the year" at some point in the 2000s...

  • cool song, but i though cat stevens was muslem?!

  • This song is the best!!

I saw Flaming Lips open for Beck and they blew him away, and I Love beck too.

    Go LIPS !

  • I love this fuckin song and I love father and son too.

I don't really think they are alike at least not to my ear.

Father and son is about relationships, fight song is about self examination. Listen to the words lots of songs have similar music the message is in the words. Yusif and Wayne are both Wordsmiths, So, shut the up, and listen. Pick your fights wisely. Be grateful and peaceful. Irony is that anyone would be hateful to either songwriter.PEACE!LOVE(:

I've seen both here,I wonder why?

  • It's so sad this song has only had 20,000 views!

  • another 3163 in a week. thats good

  • klap klap klap kalp :-)bravo re

  • CAT STEVENS MUCH!?

  • Lol, yea...it's still a cool song though.

  • It's meant 2 be...x

  • Proper love this band, you can hear the influence they have on bands like the sleepy jackson.

  • Isn't Fight Test? Anyway, when i first heard this song it did indeed remind me of Father and Son, that great old Cat Steven's song. But it sure isn't a cover.....there are some similarities in the melody. I would think that all new music is influenced by old music to a certain extent. Wayne Coyne and the Lips are pretty unique though, and i wouldn't call this song a cover.

  • Come back to Brazil this year!!!!

    We Love this song!!!

  • This was my favourite Flaming Lips song until I found out Cat stevens wrote the same tune 30 years ago - "Father and Son"

  • Love this song and the video - tolerance, non-violence and walking away is the often the right thing to do, but he should have just punched-out the big fat bully!!(sorry not very P.C)

  • Brilliant lyrics and an amazing song. Taking and altering a song while still using many of its elements is often done and isn't a bad thing. Listen to Creep by Radiohead, the best band in the world, and then go listen to the Hollies song "The Air that I Breathe."

  • Listened to Radiohead and The Hollies - very similar. Interesting that someone posted there was a fight!! over the similarities and the royalties had to be shared.

  • ok creep not the best radiohead song at all i thought pablo honey was a mistake not their best album

  • At least they did a good job. :P

  • The royalties are shared with Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens).

  • its fight test

  • They sound alike, but this song is better.

  • it is FIGHT test, i mistyped earlier. its about a fight between father and son hence the cover from cat stevens song

  • its FLIGHT test, a cover from father and son by cat stevens...

  • the test is fight or flight... in the song, he doesn't fight

  • I love this song =)

    greets from GERMANY xD

  • Ummm, guys it's Fight Test, not Flight Test. Is there anything in the song indicating Flight?

  • first heard this song in a bmx dvd, and from then ive thought it an amazing song

  • No Way! Cat Stevens Sucks. Flaming Lips Rock!

  • Amazing. They don't sound anything alike. The Flaming Lips are more inventive, I just like them more.

  • Look into it, retard. Cat Stevens gets royalties for it. The similarity was an accident.

  • damn! the roach intro made me feel funny haha.

  • The Lips acknowledge this and Stevens gets royalties from the song....

  • They did not acknowledge that this song is "a rip off from Cat Stevens" they acknowledge that it has a similar melody which was unintended. They settled royalties because they knew it was "similar" before they released it, and didn't change it.

    I like both songs myself.

  • It's fight test

  • one of the great ones...thanks

  • funny my album says 'fight test' maybe aussies got a different title...

  • yea my album says flight test

  • Holy guacamole, I love this song.

  • no its called flight test

  • it's fight test. listen to the words

  • i thought this song was "fight test"?

  • horse-shit.

mans worst friend and his best enemy.
