I have seen the same effect of cushioning between two perfectly flat surfaces without involving magnets. I beleive that is possible because of the air space between the flat surfaces not displacing fast enough as the two surfaces get close together creating a counter pressure. The opposite will happen if you lift the "magnet" fast enough from the plate, in this case vacuum will temporarely lift the plate causing a fake magnetic effect.

Pretty good way to demonstrate how a N50 magnet can repel, then attact aluminum enough to make a little noise at the last moment. The question now is how pure is the aluminum? Can one get aluminum with a little magnetic force of it's own, say with a bit of rare earth in it?

But what is really cool is if that plate instead was a superconducting plate cooled with liquid nitrogen.

Then the eddy currents would have felt no resistance what so ever and would have continued as long as that magnet was close, you could have let go of it and it would float all by itself :D
