  • I love the devilish smile Aaron makes when Alice runs into his arms, to show that he won.

  • @13annabelle131 Oh my gosh, me too! i loved it! :)

  • MY GOD! this is electrifying!

  • I get chills every time I watch this. Best show I've ever seen. :]

  • God DAMN Alice Ripley, how you get so fly???

  • i saw the tour production with alice...most powerful show ive ever seen

  • I want to be Alice. I would die to have Aarons arms around me.

  • I want to see this live so bad..

  • @cartergold12 Saw it last night. Sadly, Alice Ripley took the night off. IT WAS STILL PHENOMENAL! Very exciting piece of theatre.

  • @epg1213 OOH i'm so jealous!! I'll bet it was!

  • most intense musical

  • BREAKING, BROADWAY FANS: Tony Winner Alice Ripley, Next to Normal cast members, AND national behavioral health experts will be answering YOUR text message questions about the show, subject matter, behavioral health, and the artistic process. To participate: Text KCQA to 66746.

  • Alice Ripley's vioce reminds me of Daphne Rubin-Vega from Rent whenever I listen to the CD

  • i saw next to normal in chicago, and alice ripley sounded awful. there was something seriously wrong with her voice. i feel bad because she really shouldnt have done the performance that night.

  • @CassiDegrassi That's kind of the point. Throughout the whole musical, she changes her voice all the time so she can sound 'sick'. So basically, when she's 'ok', her voice is 'ok', but for the whole musical, she's mentally ill, so for a large chink of it, you're going to hear her sing 'badly'. This is why she won a Tony for best actress for this musical.

  • @pageturner95 No, I don't think you understand unless you actually see it for yourself. I saw her in Seattle and she sounded nothing like from what I've heard on Broadway and the cast recording. She was painfully flat on almost every number and seriously needs to rest her voice.

  • @sonny102 I did see her for myself, and she was phenomenal. Maybe it is because it's her and only her playing this role and she needs an understudy (unless she already has one). I don't know.

  • @pageturner95 Alice's U/S on the tour is Pearl Sun, and Pearl has seen quite a bit of stage time, from what I've heard of some of my friends who went to see the show (for Alice, let's face it) and were disappointed, even though Pearl is an amazing musician and actress. Is Alice's voice hurting. Yes. But damn, she's still amazing.

  • 4:42 to 5:07 is my absolute favorite part. Not only do all 3 of them sound absolutely amazing but the raw emotion and relationships are so apparent it's like you can feel the frustration and pain. Ugh just amazing.

  • I can't believe that's princess lea...

  • i loveee alice ripley! gahh, she's amazing.

  • Aaron Tveit is so so so good

  • i get chills

  • 4:13 creeped me out, though the musc is incredible, it's still creepy

  • its performances like this that make me want to do theater for the rest of my life.

  • I love this but the song makes it scarry how strange there relationship is!Ahhhh! Love you Aaron no matter how creepy you act!

  • This show is just so powerful and so beautiful. I can't describe how much I love this musical and I really can't understand how anyone could dislike it.

  • every body at 4:47 her face his hilarious!

  • She's so off time in the beginning.

  • @LTDdr0pde4d No it's not. The accompaniment ALWAYS follows the singer, right or wrong. Regardless of that, that happens, the singers take their own pace. And sometimes its different than the recording.

  • To me it seems like the relationship between Diana and Gabe is creepy for a reason. I think she doesn't view him as her son, but almost like a god or something. That's why he's always super hot, as well as intelligent and witty. He's her perfect guardian angel to save her from her imperfect family. I may be wrong, but that's my impression. :-)

  • @treehuggrgirl Actually, you pretty much hit the nail on the head. That's one of the reasons Gabe is described in the liner notes and on the marquee as "every mother's dream". He really is the "Superboy". She created an ideal son since hers was taken from her.

  • Billy Eliot was nowhere near as good as this. I saw them both. N2N wins hands down. Elton John is just a musical genius so not winning would be a shock for him

  • THIS IS AMAZING<3

  • the music in the back ground seems too loud... >:(

  • @roobix101 There were SO many problems with the audio, during this broadcast.

  • I love how Lin Manuel Miranda kind of gives his personal seal of approval at the end lol

  • Saw this in SF but I think she had a cold because her voice sounded different and slightly annoying. This performance however was beautiful and her voice is amazing!

  • @hulahoop36 I think her voice is getting really tired from all of the performances. In seattle she cancelled one of the performances i went to, and when i saw her in a different performance her voice was really strained. She kept on singing down an octave instead of hitting the high notes

  • @krankyzebra28 That makes sense. I saw her in Seattle recently, and her voice was SO hard to listen to. After the performance, I heard a lot of people complaining about it. :/

  • Why do people think the relationship between Dianna and Gabe is creepy? I feel like they are totally missing the point.

  • 4:10 - Aaron's smile, so cute:P

My fav song of Next to normal:)

  • I'm so glad Alice won the Tony. If she hadn't I might have gone and hunted down the Tony committee myself.

  • Best Broadway show I've seen in a while.

  • The son is very attractive....very attractive....

  • Oh my God, 5:11. SO HOT. And really, really creepy at the same time.

  • @zombiegirl626 i find myself drooling as i look at his face here. so hot! and i love how everyone starts cheering loudly once he appears on the stairs.

  • I'd rather have a Pulitzer than a Tony.

  • the 5 people that disliked this beautiful performance.. you don't know, i know you don't know

  • @MakeupBySav five that disliked this are not next to norma,l

  • just say this on Broadway yesterday and it was pretty good :) loved the score and the acting and to think it only had 5 cast members is unbelievable!

  • @bisgurlll

    6 actually. It's awesome.

  • Aaron Tveit is a babe.

  • I really love how Alice created her own tempo. It sounded great.

  • Is it me or is Alice taking her own tempo?

  • @sdrhead i realize that too and it really bothered me but its only the video but its sad cuz this is one of the few good videos of it live =(

  • OMG!! I'm seeing it on the 10 and I'm soo excited!!! It just seems like a truly incredible and touching show. Ahhhh, soo excited!!

  • this is the best musical ever.

  • You can hear gabe laugh at 4:54. Creepy.

  • This is the best musical ever created!!!!!! I'm Next-To-Normal FOR LIFE!!!

  • Omg I LOVE this musical sooooo much!!!! Dan is my ultimate dream role!!!! <3

  • ok billy elliot is probably fantastic but how could it beat something so original and powerful? i can't wait to see this in april. too bad aaron tveit isn't touring with the show. he is sooooo HOT!!!

  • the 5 dislikes make me sad, because that means they don't know amazing broadway.

  • BEST SHOW EVER!!!!!!

  • it tells us something to know this show won the pulitzer prize. the last musical to win the pulitzer was rent.

  • I am dying to see this!!!!!

  • you can't really explain it without spoiling it in my opinion. i loveee this show, everyone needs to see it!

  • oh my gosh i am in love with this song. it's so intense and powerful.

  • She's going SLOW!!! She's intensely great, but she is really off time in this clip. Or at least in the beginning.

  • @whitetiefilms i also think she dragged a bit in the beginning. :) still she's a great actress. she deserved the tony. :)

  • @raigonzales Alice couldn't hear it well. there was aparently an echo which made it hard to hear the music onstage. i'm just glad the mics didn't go out for them!

  • @ndwicked83 yeah. it looked like she was trying to pick up the pace but i'm glad she managed to do it. :)

  • i used "i am the one" for an audition - a capella and no training in singing it - and got a callback!! ty next to normal!!

  • soooooo goood

  • She's going too slow I want to FIX IT. xD I saw this on Broadway today, brilliance<3

  • does anybody know where I can find the broadway version of How Could I Ever Forget? with J robert spencer singing at the end? ive looked everywhere! thanks!

  • i love this video soooo hot

  • One of the top 5 best shows I have ever seen.

  • I love Alice Ripley! the two best shows i've ever seen on Broadway are N2N as Diana Goodman and Side Show as Violet Hilton. Alice is a true gifted artist and glad she finally won the TONY!

  • This looks like a great show! I wanna see this so badly! I love Aaron Tveit in this.

  • It's beyond a great show!!! BEST SHOW EVER! Alice is amazing -- really life changing performance! You have to see it!

  • Is it just me, or is the relationship between Diana and Gabe a little creepy? haha

  • @heringtonchick Oh, it's not just you. :)

  • @radioguyrey Of course, that's the way it's supposed to be... otherwise, how do you have an antagonist?

  • @radioguyrey aren't they supposed to be mom and kid? lol... def thought he was gonna go for a kiss there lol... just sayin.

  • @radioguyrey But it's not really her son...it's just Diana's projection of her son. Her son died when he was a baby.

  • @heringtonchick What I think after having seen the show is that Gabriel isn't actually the image of her son per se. I believe that Gabe is the image of everything she wants in her life that she doesn't have. That's just what I think.

  • @heringtonchick

Is Gabe Diana's only son? I saw this yesterday and couldn't figure it out. Is her "dead" son another boy, or is Gabe the dead son who is not a part of the other character's lives in the present? That was the only part that really confused me.

  • @ARReith Gabe is their only son. He is a spirit/memory still haunting Diana and Dan because they haven't let go. If you listen to "I'm Alive" and the reprise, along with "You Don't Know Reprise" he's reason for being there is explained.

  • @heringtonchick No, not creepy. Well yeah you can take it as creepy. But it's supposed to be an unusual, intense, and unstoppable fixation.

  • @heringtonchick when you watch the whole show (like i did today) it makes a little more sense....hes very childlike and sorta evil....or at least thats how i saw it....

  • @heringtonchick That's the idea: her son is trying to pull her away from her husband. It's meant to be weird because of what's going on in their lives. That's all I'm going to say; I don't want to spoil it for the ones who haven't seen it yet.

  • Comment removed

  • @heringtonchick Should see it... Makes sense then :P

  • @heringtonchick It's supposed to be! No worries :D

  • @heringtonchick yep, but I also think it's a pretty legit reaction; there's nothing in the world she wants more than him.

  • @heringtonchick yep, but I also think it's a pretty legit reaction; there's no one in the world she wants more than him, and she can't have him.

  • @heringtonchick ummm i think that's the idea?

  • Definitely the best performance of the Tony's, hands down.

  • This was the best performance at the Tony's this past year. I was really impressed.

  • I honestly don't know what people see in this musical, but damn is she a good actress.

  • you have to go see it.

  • This musical is so brilliant!! Talk about a breath of fresh air!! Finally something that is relevant, that people can relate to!!Brilliant!!

  • Next to Normal is so beyond spectacular. After watching this, I went to see it recently on Broadway. And I almost died. SO SO SO GOOD.

Hands down, my favorite musical ever. And this is coming from a person who's seen Wicked, Billy Elliot, Hair, and West Side Story (which was not that good, btw).

N2N is unmatched. Extremely sad though. The whole theatre was in tears by the end.

  • omg, wow, I can't freaking stop watching this over and over again. lol

  • BILLY ELLIOT IS AMAZING!!!

but i really really really want to go see this one!!!

  • Excellent show. I've seen it twice. I'd love to see it again. The music, the story, and the performances were simply top notch.

It's accurately portrayed not as a "feel good" play but rather a "feel everything" experience.

  • can't wait to see this show! they are brilliant

  • Oh come on! Where's Jennifer? Why didn't she sing? :(

  • I just saw this yesterday. I was in awe. Simply amazing!

  • Amazing performance and song!

  • i haven't seen this can someone explain it to me?

  • Please, no spoilers.

  • it;s about a woman with bipolar disorder who for some reason doesn't want to take medicine so her family has to suffer. oh yeah, and there's a really hot guy in it.

  • @proudtheatredork listen I respect your opinion, but you don't need to go looking for arguments where you are only gonna find fans of the show, that's jut being annoying. Also, it seems like you don't have a very clear understanding of bipolar disorder, otherwise you would realize why it's hard for a person to take medication, or even figure out whether medication is right for them. Please, in all fairness don't start arguing unless you really know.

  • @nimo101383 Dianna, the wife has bipolar. They went through a family crisis but she insist that she's the only victim... that's when she sang "You Don't Know" to her husband, Dan. Later Dan explains his side saying don't give up on me, "I am the one who knows you..." Their son, Gabe joins his father.

  • @nimo101383 nimo go to wikipedia and enter in next to normal. theres a full summary of the musical there.

  • @nimo101383 There's a thing called wikipedia, yah know.

  • @nimo101383 with no spoliers, lets see its about a bi-polar mother and her life including her family and her constant struggle with meds.. it has a shocking ending

  • @nimo101383 its about a family and their son(Aaron Tevit) passed away when he was very young and the mother(Alice Ripley) can't handle it and her treatments she also imagines him there and helping her(that is why he is there) but nobody else can hear or see him except the mother.

  • i saw it over the summer, alice ripely is a god.

Ahhh. i have to see it again. !!!

  • God DAMNIT, I love you Alice Ripley!

  • Alice Ripley was terrific in this show, and deservedly took home the Tony 4 N2N. I just wish she'd had some actual competition for Best Actress in a Musical; it would have made her win seem more genuine. I guess 2009 was like 1995, when Sunset Boulevard took home 7 Tony Awards mainly because it had no competition (It had only ONE other Best Musical nominee, and Glenn Close's only competition was Rebecca Luker in Show Boat)

  • She did have competition!! Allison Janney! She is a Academy-Award winner for peat sakes!! lol But yes Alice totally deserved this!! LOVE HER!

  • Allison Janney has never won an Academy Award, lmao. She's won 4 Emmy awards/

  • It says in the 9 to 5 Playbill she is.

  • great video! thank you for posting this!

  • CHILLLSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love Alice's face at 4:39 and Aaron's face at 5:12. Alice's face cracks me up, and Aaron's face is deliciously creepy and arrogant.

  • I know!! She's adorable!!

  • Why didn't this win?

  • @wickedfeylady they liked billy elliot better. at least alice ripley won.

  • OMG I LOVED THE MUSICAL ON BROADWAY!!!! It was ammmaaazzziinnngg! Go c it. U wont regret it!

  • whats the musical about? I've been looking for a new musical to listen too.

  • Pick this one, it rocks, I saw the show over two weeks ago and I still can't stop thinking about it. The show (dn't look up a synopsis cuz there are many twists that can be spoiled) is about an American family in suburbia coping with issues from their past, including mental illness and grief, and trying to get on with the future. If you want a preview of the songs, I'd listen to "Just Another Day" "I Miss the Mountains" "You Don't Know" "I Am The One" and "Superboy and the Invisible Girl"

  • You forgot "I'm Alive."

  • you can search it in wikipedia.. it's about Family and Bipolar disorder.. well not all of it but I guess this Musical is Good hehheee.. I wish I could see it.. T.T

  • What would you suggest to pay money to see?

  • billy elliot, in the heights, hair, west side story, etc. anything that you can't see on any lifetime movie.

  • Hair would be alright west side story......... looks terrible,Billy elliot is sooo overrated, in the heights i forgot about... shows how much that means to me... This is the only preformance that in my mind did very well at the tonys despite the crappy sound issues.

  • if anything is overrated, it's this show. billy elliot has an amazing storyline and an emotional aspect to it that you can't get without seeing the show. just because soemthing's a success doesn't mean it's bad. it deserves all the press it gets. the only thing n2n has going for it is the music, and you can easily just get the soundtrack for a quarter of a ticket price. the storyline sucks. i don't know how you forgot about in the heights but ok.

  • well they are always playing billy elliot and west side story on an movie channel so why pay money to see them, next to normal is amazing its a musical based on real problems that people can relate to

  • @proudtheatredork You should remove the first two words from your name.

  • @Kaalec Oh you're a clever one. Sorry for thinking the people who actually won the Tonys deserved it. I promise you I know my theater.

  • @proudtheatredork I stand by my previous post, Dork.

  • The musical is about a woman who has never lat her dead son go. She is convenced that he alive. Infact, she is so convenced and so focused on her dead son, shes been neglecting her family. The songs are fantastic. They are the type of songs you would hear on the radio and not just some corny musical. I defenitely suggest seeing this musical.

  • even though you feel for diana, it is very selfish of her to be like this. especially when she has her daughter also to care for

  • @youdontknowjack24

Diana can't help how she acts, how she feels, or what she does. It's her illness (bipolar disorder) that makes her act as she does.

  • @youdontknowjack24 Yes, it's very selfishy of her to have mental illness. How dare she! You should change your name to I don'tknowjack.

  • i love when she kinda cracks on 'colour'

    it just fits =]

  • I want to see this show in the worst way!

  • Everything about this performance is orgasmic...It won Best Musical in my eyes. haha! The cast is incredible in every way!

  • omg. i am dying to see this!!!!!

  • I watch this all the time its awesome. I love it.

  • So do I!

  • omg i watch this everyday :) i love it

  • Check out Lin Manuel Miranda at 5:32!!! I love him

  • saw this on sunday. amazing!@

  • I watched this like.. I don't even know. I lost count. It's sooo good! I'm glad Alice Ripley won best actress.

  • I'm pretty sure I have watched this like 6 times. Sick performance.

  • best moment ever: 4:49 to 4:54

  • can you please tell me what happens in the end of the play with gabe and everyone! PM me plzz!!

    <3 great vid

  • his smile at 5:13 is positively evil. SOOO sexy.

  • i call it the tviet smile.

  • @tennisace90 "I gotch yo wife!"

  • poor alice ripley, she's completely behind in the music at like 1:18....oh well, she still sounds incredible.

I LOVE NEXT TO NORMAL!!!! SQUEEEE :)))))))))))

  • Love this

  • Does Alice Ripleys Character die in this show?

  • Ha. Why would you ask for a potential spoiler? I'll send you a private response.
