  • We might've known that :P

  • "I supposed I had to say something more intelligent than 'very nice, Miss!'" :-)))!

A plinth being regarded as a piece of art by one of the tutors? Why, I say: Even a plain piece of mere craftsmanship has got some spark and some idea in it, right? Let's not mock the man ;-) ...

  • I laughed harder then I have in the longest time brother.

  • My dad went to art school also and I imagine his stories would sound much like yours. It is just a pleasure to listen to you recall the interesting moments of the past. Thanks

  • awesome

  • i think this is my favorite of all the Geriatric vids

  • Most people don't like listening to old people, including me. But your British accent and stories are so inviting and make me forget about the stresses of the day. Continue this up!

  • Sorry I shall rephrase:

I believe that plinth said to that art tutor; " I am more intelligent than you are." This video serves as a kindly reminder as to why I opted to do a science degree as opposed to an arts degree.

  • I believe the plinth said to that art tutor that it is more intelligent than he was. This video serves as a kindly reminder as to why I opted to do a science degree as opposed to an arts degree.

  • your memory is extremely good, remembering events so clearly as if it happened yesterday

  • fantastic stuff!!

  • LOL Pete. The teachers were similar at my Art school (RMIT). The pretentiousness and ego was enourmous! Skill had no importance. It totally turned me off Fine Art.

  • That was hilarious. Your video narrative art appears to far surpass the pretentions of the declining "art world."

  • Although not an artist myself I have seen (in the media and at a student exhibition) the same things you are talking about. The guy rattling on about the shelf just goes to show that a lot of this stuff is just made up by the people looking at it. The ending had me laughing out loud, fantastic stuff!

  • thanks for sharing! i love them all!

  • I just want to tell you that I'm an artist. I'm going into illustration, at a school in my area. And I like your stories, because they relate to me quite a bit. The things you say make me smile, because I know where you're coming from. The first day that I had gone to college, which was last year, there was a gallery open in my school that was also quite pornographic. haha, so I know what you mean. Thank you for posting your thoughts on here, and I will continue to read them.

  • hahaha, it's not about being a lesbian, it's about the world of art. Do you do pretentious art with naked female parts?

Hmmm, yes mycatlilly, maybe you do!

  • I'm a lesbian too. And you need to learn how to focus your camera.

  • Yale is in the US, geriatric1927 is not

    ass

  • That sounds like Yale. Is that where you went?

  • Another excellent vid - thanks Peter - enjoyed the lesbian story - ignore the feminists, we know where you're coming from. Keep it up. Cheers.

  • Did you know that an empty plinth won a prize in a big show only very recently? I have googled, but I can't find the articles. The sculpture that was supposed to go on the plinth was shipped in a different box. It was not selected for the show.

As another who studied art as an adult, I was particularly amused by this episode.

    Best regards.

  • I'm seeing <3 everywhere now. What does it mean, I'm begging you someone tell me!!!

  • I hadn't figured out what that meant for quite some time myself, but I eventually came to learn that it is a symbolic heart, and can be used in place of the word, "love".

  • It's supposed to represent a heart or love :)

  • LOL! Sounds like you took a very grounded view of the world of art, and was not swayed by the pretentiousness that can some time coincided with it. I love the story of the man philosophising about the gallery space. Brilliant stuff!

  • haha, I love listning to your stories. :+)

  • I'm still working my way through your stories, and I can't express to you how much I am enjoying the insight into your world.

    <3

  • Dear Peter, please do not let the comment by ButThenAgain concern you. The vast majority of us can tell that you are a kind man with an appropriate and witty sense of humor. With people viewing you by the thousands there are bound to be a few outliers, statistically speaking.

  • I would not be surprised to be chosen, you're amazing. Yeah I never got conceptual either, we had to study that this year and I did not enjoy it at all lol. I think I could learn more about art and life from you than anyone else. You're a blessing. Love ya!

  • Great, Wonderful stuff keep up the good work xxxxx

  • I just fell opon your program and I think its refreashing to see a well put together show on you tube.

  • ... thats stupid.

  • I've never got the conceptual stuff either. Everytime we asked why some of the stuff in say the Tate gallery was art considered art we only got a "what is art?" as a reply. o_O Not very enlightening.

I sometimes wonder if art critics and the like only come up with their comments to make them look smarter. Like they can see something in the artwork that us proles cannot.

  • "Interesting" ... LOL classic. I studied art at high school and when our teachers looked at our work and didn't like it - they never said anything negative. They just said "mmmmm interesting". So we soon knew the real meaning of interesting and used to go around to other student's work and say "mmm interesting". Lots of laughs : )

  • great video pete.

  • you have inspired me, I am only young in your terms (40) but I am going to enrol on a art course - drawing and painting for beginners !

  • I love your stories! :-)

  • Yet another WONDERFUL video Pete. :o)

  • While watching this, its occured to me that some may consider your blogs as 'art'. I wonder how your uni lectureres would comment on the 'senedipidy of these ;) all the bast

  • We love hearing you share your life and look forward to sitting down and listing to your video's as you update us in your relaxing gentle voice. Bless You The Smith's, USA Ga

  • Peter, the best. Been said before me but I'll say it again. Just plain and simply the best on youtube.

  • ha love that song..

  • im studying art and art history right now, and everything you talk about in this video is so true (about the teachers and conceptualness of it all etc)

  • Peter you are exactly what people need, a old guy who can tell about the past and hopefully by that teach younger people the tricks of an old dog.

  • Dear Peter, never mind age. You are a breath of fresh spring air.

  • Peter, your a master of the art of storytelling. Thanks again for sharing.

  • As inspirational as ever. Very entertaining too!

  • Peter, you have become a fixture in my world. Hope you post again soon. Love your stream of consciousness.

  • jiz... what the fuck happend to this world..

  • This one is so funny. As an ex art student, now designer I know how 'up their own Hmmm, hmm' the art world can be.

    P.S. I didn't get the bricks either.

  • Peter - your videos are my favorite by far. I saw that you are taking a break. A well deserved one at that, but I hope you continue to post videos when you can.

  • Great job again Peter. You're a star! I just read on Yahoo news...Pensioner becomes surprise YouTube star.

Keep up the videos. You are the top of the pops!

  • ...

  • "Hard work and new ways of thinking", are encouraging words 4 almost any human beeing on this planet earth.

One wouldn`t expect it to be spread from a man in his golden years. Respect! Keep up that good work as well as your personality. Thank you

  • i wanna see the pics the lesbian drew!!!

  • great !! like the bit at the end lol

  • i dunt understand whats so good about this...

  • Many people don't HY. Peter's blogs are not for everyone. He does attract the more intelligent viewers though who are interested in listening to a very wise and articulate man talk about his life and experiences. He is real and speaks from the heart. To thousands of youtubers, this is a welcome breath of fresh air and a much needed break from the videos of morons lighting their farts on fire.

  • "To thousands of youtubers, this is a welcome breath of fresh air and a much needed break from the videos of morons lighting their farts on fire."

Now THAT was funny! Great comment!

  • at least you have a grandpa. not all of us have, i think that is one of the many reasons why this is so popular.

  • Just like listening to my grandparents prattle on about this and that

  • lols you've been in the german tv, i THINK.

there was a show about Youtube and similar internet sites.

    :D

  • Quite well done - I can remember what a let down finally going to collage was - I had always thought that that was the place were all the smart people were hiding.

  • The 'Art' world can be so preposterous. But it is just another social machine, and it is dominated by institutions (schools and galleries) and their functionaries, and, in the end, money. Along with the quest for fame. You would think that marketing was the highest art form.

I love your stories. Keep 'em coming.

  • I always watch these because they're so popular, but i usually regret it.

  • so....don't watch it! ?? Unless, you are being forced to click.

  • I'd just like to say, if u love listening to old people talk bollocks for 10mins, u can come take my grandparents away, borrrinnnnnggggg

  • Apparently you were never taught that if you have nothing good to say then STFU....oops I meant then don't say anythingat all =p

  • What learning about art teaches you: how to bullshit your way through life. A very, very valuable and underestimated life-skill.

    :-P

  • OH MY GOSH YOU ARE THE COOLEST GUY !

  • You are quite pleasant to watch! I am enthralled by your videos! :)

  • I cant understand why he's so intresting...

  • This guy's almost 80 years old, and he's cooler than me.

  • i LOVE David Hockney's work by the way too. Saw a very comprehensive and impressive show of his drawings and paintings this past spring in Boston. he;s such a beautiful draftsman.

  • Would love to hear why negative comments are allowed here and everywhere else except Paris Hilton's celeb section. Posting commeents are not monitored like hers. NOTE TO PARIS: Paris, please understand the reason people come to this website is to see and hear 'REAL PEOPLE.' You have the television and we have YouTube. We see enough over-exposed people on tv and we're a bit burned out by it.

    Please reconsider.

  • IT'S MIDNIGHT HERE IN THE UNITED STATES AND I GOT TO GET A BEER, PAPA TUBE IS TRIPING ME OUT. lol take care Pops

    A true "You Tuber"

  • What's that brown stuff around your lips? I guess the rest of us are just pesents huh...

  • yea...you just don't get it

  • apparently not

  • my bad dude I meant for that comment to go someone else. I hear ya

  • you are my hero. comment me sometimes

  • how can u listen to this guys story on every video he does...its sooooooooooo boring....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • heyy rock on old man!!

  • flyfrt I hope you mean that in a good way.

I just realized what one of my favorite parts in all your videos are. It's when you say goodbye. It just sounds so sweet and nice.

  • haha...i admired him but what u said its true. i click to the end listen to him say 'Goodbye'. It's become my fevorite part right away. :-D

  • hey gramps take a vacation

  • Sir, I am glad I found your posts. I know that, personally, I would be so fortunate to end up being in some form of university study for the rest of my life. I'm a student of life, sometimes I fail, sometimes I excel, but at all times I am grateful for the lesson learned.

  • the lesbian and the breaded professor were the best!

  • I absolutely LOVED the story about the art man pulling his beard and talking about how interesting the blank space was. That just made me laugh!! You are a true treasure. I appreciate your stories so much!

  • "Must have been the wrong time of the month..." LOL.

  • My $.002. If it weren't for people like politichick being "offended", we'd all still be working 90 hours a week in coal mines. Instead of being defensive, Peter accepts her criticism and apologizes, sincerely regretting the offense. She appreciates this and calls him a class act. Respect turns conflict into friendship. Well done! And like everybody else says, your videos have become a bright spot in my day. Thank you.

  • Great comment-- I totally agree.

  • Thanks for paying attention to what I really said, WAJazz. Peter did so too (I knew he would), and we had a rational, respectful exchange. I think those are healthy and positive!

  • "we had a rational, respectful exchange."

Defined by the fact that you got him to censor his thoughts as he said some things you found objectionable. Thanks for that coup. Now Peter is going to question what he says for fear of 'offending' anyone. Great job.

Also- 'politichick'- the term "chick" is mysogynistic. It infantilizes females and its use is offensive.

  • That's a bizarre analogy. Peter made comments referring to the fact that women go through monthly biological changes that alter their disposition and commented about a lesbian who was clearly expressing her sexuality. It shocks me that some people might take what he said as being offensive and most Females/Lesbians likely found it funny.

Unless of course we are dealing with politcal activists who seek to silence anything they deem as inappropriate thoughts or speach.

  • ay man, enuff of this bullshit.

  • I love watching your videos, it's awesome to see someone just talk about their life, it makes me feel warm inside. Keep making videos, you're the best.

  • I'ts a pleasure observing your videos...no F words, no rudeness or in your face remarks, yelling, loud disgusting music etc..Keep up the good story telling!

  • Liked the video... I found what you said about art university amusing because I am at art college and the way you said they spoke is right on target... Its interesting though.. once you get past the un-understandable words and phrases they use...

  • another awsome vid, go on =D

  • I greatly enjoy each video you put out. Thank you.

  • Another great vid, thnx man.

  • Nice one pete, please keep telling your stories as they were and don't censor them just becuase some liberal pc brigade idiots get offended.

I'd like to know your view on the pc brigade banning smoking on tom and jerry cartoons?.

  • haha, wrong time of the month

  • I could listen to you all day, you have pretty amazing stories.

  • There are so many different kinds of art... I'm a follwer of the fleeting art, art that's only going to be around for a short while so one have to appreciate it while it's there (like a flower on a grassy hill or an ice sculpture), that said, I DO like lasting art as well (paintings, sculptures and monuments).

    Gambatte ojiisan!

  • It is quite apparent that you are a, "hater" and have nothing better to do with your time, yet I have a serious question for you. What do you get out of posting vile comments? I'm serious, I really want to know?

  • Great Video peter. Obviously, as I do with all your other videos, I'm loving them. Can't wait for your next one.

  • Fantastic Peter,

    I really enjoy your videos

They brighten up my day :o)

  • 'hello you tubers' :( where'd it go?! This was a great video tho!

  • How refreshing to hear that someone else can not grasp the "art" in Modern Art! Great videos, I watch them all.

  • PLZ READ THIS PETER: Can u do a timeline about ur life including the ages you were wen you did this im getting confused thanks ;)

  • hehe would be good if he did the time line thing.. because i'm also getting lost :D

  • Love your work! It just gets better with every post.

  • He is one of the greatest men, lets hope he never changes and that other people are inspired to follow in his steps or are inspired to take on life as he did and make this world better.

  • Hello, Peter!

These are strange times, indeed. I've only seen 2 of your videos, and I already see you as a dear distant friend.

    Keep those videos coming!

    From Portugal, adeus!!

  • Hey a great voice for the Creature Comfort sketches :P

  • WTF Mate? You didnt say Hello you tubers.

  • More Sonny Boy! You can't go wrong with that soundtrack!

  • Keep up with the videos. :)

  • Keep up the good work you are doing. I really think you have the right idea here.

  • Thank you again, Peter, for a wonderful chat. You're becoming such a friend to many of us. I have to agree about the wallpaper though. I think it would give me a headache too. xxxx

  • Peter Sir you are one of the greatest story tellers i've seen in awhile. Please keep going i can't wait to learn more about your time spent at university

  • 2:57 Mark you said: "Your daughter might have been having her wrong time of the month" HA!!!! As a female, I thought that comment was PHAT!!!

    ROCK ON PETER!!!

  • Oh crap! I didn't listen very well. You said it was your BOSS LADY who might have been at that wrong time of the month....I thought it was your daughter. Woops! My bad! Forgive me! I need to clean my ears out LOL!!!!

  • You do rock, I don't know if I would've continued on after that woman started ranting about skill, probably because I would've found it annoying, but you have great determination. I think there is a lot of skill involved in art, and all things. But then, I've seen people stand in front of 'paintings' where the artist has sloshed and smeared a bit of paint on an canvas, and I've just laughed at them.

  • Peter you are so great. The more you post these videos, the more I want to hear about all the rest. I hope you are having a great day.

  • Peter do you think tomatoes are healthy? Talk about tomatoes!

  • another bright spot in my day thank you sir

  • That wallpaper would gives me a headache

  • "demanded to get out of bed before 12"!!! lol, that story right before the 6 minute mark is halariously real... oh my god the lesbian comment was halarious... maybe you should make a video to friends only, I am very interested... not made you a friend yet, but you deserve it.. so this video will be favorited, and my friend invite is coming... you left your early life vague, but Im diggin the later life!

  • You are such a polite gentleman! I am loving your stories more and more! I am so glad I subscribed to you! You are what makes YouTube so wonderful :)

  • please go to my profile ppl because my quest to have ground breaking views will continue till i do.

  • loves it! I might be able to put a video response, just got to figure it out. LOL i have a webcam, so i dunno

  • When I was younger and doing art in school for the first time, I spilt a load of paint on a canvas accidentally and at some point the teacher wandered by and saw this piece of "work". I got an A+ and she said I had the soul of a poet. That was my introduction to the world of art.

  • LESBIAN SAID THE BETTER .

  • Another wonderful video, and I ESPECIALLY enjoyed the off the cuff, spontaneous personal reactions (time of the month, reaction to the lesbian's announcement). They were an honest expression of your reaction at the time ... no more, no less. Some people seem to have chips permanently welded to their shoulders. Shrug it off and continue. Please!

  • I'd like to see some pictures of when you were young or when you were in univ. or at least some of your art work... Pretty please with an extra large cherry on top? :D

  • So nice to come home to! xoxo

  • I have to say, your an inspiration to us all! Well done! You obviously deserve your fame :D

  • I enjoyed your use of the word "eugolize". It fits perfectly the way one can go on and on trying to say something fitting or witty or wise about something that is most often, in the long run trivial. Thanks!

  • Peter, thats the funniest vid youve ever done.

  • glad you're listing the songs now because i'm into this jazz vibe :D

  • Stick some Little Walter on for me pls. anything but Juke. Thx.

  • Peter, thats the funniest vid youve ever done. Great stories.

  • Awsome!

  • ahhh, thanks for the chuckle Peter i enjoyed that!

  • Love your videos Peter. I come home from work everyday hoping that there is a new one to watch. I hope sometime you'll include some stories about your growing up years, earliest childhood memories, etc.

  • I call it the "emperor with no clothes" method. French film is the best example. It seems the Lesbian artist took that literally though. :)

  • Peter, PLEASE return as soon as you can. You are a gift and the world so needs your presence.

  • I'm a woman and every woman I know has "a time of the month". When a woman says it, is that the only time it's OK? I'm not offended. I think few women are. Don't worry about the few oversensitive a##holes who might be having a bad day and feel like they want to blow off some steam screaming at a kindly and generous soul. Keep making your videos-uncensored by those people who are obviously having "that time of the month".

  • Thank you again Mr. Peter...you've captured my attention again. Florida, USA

  • Peter I loved this. I took some photography classes and I had fun with what I called arm wavers. Used to say you could take a picture of a pile of s@#t in black and white, of course, stand back and wait to hear what wonderful message you had just offered to the world at large.

  • Why can't you live on the road that I live on, all the old people near me are nothing like you. >_>; That sucks. >.<

  • LOL Peter I love your observations, and it was so cute when you got to the part about the lesbian artist. It's so funny how back then that was a HUGE deal, whereas nowadays, people don't even flinch from stuff like that because we've been so desensitized to that sort of thing. Keep the videos coming, I love them!

  • Hi Peter. I love how natural you are in your videos, please don't change just because some people disliked you "time of the month" comment. You can't please everybody.

  • Peter, Great video . Diane ( Cape Breton Island ) 4th. most beautiful Island in the world to visit !! Out of 10.

  • Hey Diane, Cape Breton is beautiful. That must make Newfoundland 2nd? ha

Keep up the great videos Peter.

  • That was the funniest video yet Peter! Tell it like it is :)

  • got the candy this time again!

I love how he puts the glasses on just to check the time!

    Yes again fantastic video

    Well done

  • Oh Peter love, you just get better and better. You are soooo funny. Natural humour is the best, amd you're the best of my day. Thank you xx

  • Well Peter this onme made me laugh even more than the last. Luckily I only got around to watching part 9 tonight so I got 2 at once! As for the misogynist, etc accusations against you: PLEASE REALISE MOST OF US ARE INTELLIGENT ENOUGH to understand the context and HUMOUR!! People take themselves too seriously it seems! No need to apologise too much to them mate.

  • Another great video from peter. Keep them coming!

  • now im curious to see those lesbian pictures!

seriously, how about sharing your art work?

  • Your videos are getting better. The sprinklings of amusing anecdotes and increasing display of humour makes this amongst your best. You also seem a bit more relaxed and natural. I'm thinking we're beginning to see the real Peter emerging.

  • NOOOOOOOO!!!! I will miss your almost-daily story-times!!! But you aren't saying FAREWELL, are you? More like AU REVOIR?? PLEASE? I understand you need/want to take time to go through all your resposes, must be overwhelming! But PLEASE do come back, if only for a 1-minute anecdote now and then!!!

  • Peter thanks for posting the name of the Blues track. Something about Blues music has always struck me somewhere inside, and I've always wanted to explore that musical world. Thanks for the pointer.

    Cheers,

    Cyrus

  • hehe, you're funny. you made me laugh :D

  • hehe loved the last bit 'Probably we might have known that!' (exactly!) why do people feel they have to make these announcements..! do I announce 'hello I'm a hetrosexual' Of course not!

they need to get over it, we have!

    : )

  • Well said shishilala! Not always, and always less, I find people that are still hung up with they're sexual identity... Enough already, today it's more ok than ever to be what you want to be! So just BE!

  • Love your wit & observations Peter xx

  • I'll second that!

  • i,ll third that

  • where did you go to uni peter?

  • Thanks for your response, Peter. I didn't think you were truly someone who held views like that. That's honestly why I called you on it - I believe that sometimes folks say things like that without thinking, and they think better of it when it is pointed out. You're a class act, sir!!

  • The joke about the lesbian was that she made such a big thing about it herself. Clearly she was making both a statement in more than a verbal way. As for the other - PMT jokes are also the realm of female commedians. Are they the only ones able to make them?

  • I had to paint a copy of a Hockney and yes the man has skill AND talent. His works might look easy, but I assure you they are not. To the males who watch this....everytime a woman has a bad day it is NOT always her "time of the month". And what curt comment can we ladies use when you gents act up? "Don't mind Bob it's just (baseball, soccer, football, cricket..insert sport here...) season". Sheesh! I
