  • This description is under the original posting. "Highly respected vocalist Ernestine Anderson renders an engaging woman's version of the Blues Classic, "I Want a Little Girl" in Berlin in 1978.

She was wonderfully supported by a swinging trio, led by the late, legendary bassist Ray Brown, with Mike Renzi on piano and Randy Jones on drums.

  • Pause it at 3'20" - definitely Kenny Clare on drums...

  • go mike renzi you are the best you blend so well with others it is so mike renzi i know him personally and that is him so smarten up folks

  • go mike renzi you are the best you blend so well with others

  • go mike renzi you are the best

  • Yeah, WOW!

  • of course Monty Alexander recognise the style!!!!!!

  • Wow you guys are some real pianist experts!...I thought it was Mike Renzi for a moment myself...and I'm Jamaican and have always paid close attention to Mr Alexander's career!

  • She sings great and what a fab pianist.

  • I've been part of this discussion, and got replies insisting this was Mike Renzi.

I am very fortunate on having worked with Ms Ernestine Anderson in several occasions and with Monty Alexander this week.

I got to ask him yesterday, and not only was him at the piano in this gig, this was his trio with Ray Brown until 1982.

Back then, Mike Renzi was working with Mel Torme and involved in TV shows, with popular singers of the time.

Renzi grew the beard and people would mix him up with Monty.

  • I repeat. I WAS AT THIS CONCERT, THAT WAS AT THE BERLIN JAZZ FESTIVAL, Germany, on NOVEMBER 2, 1979. This is the Ray Brown Trio with Monty Alexander at the piano and english drummer Kenny Clare ! Period ! !

  • Monty Alexander!!!!

  • Sorry this is Monty Alexander at the piano i have 30 min. part of this concert on video.

  • exellent

  • This definately is not Mike Renzi-to just settle the dispute-I know his hands and they're not his. Some similarities for conversation sake but it is not Renzi. Nice playing thogh.

  • If this is Renzi, he must have listened to the recording of this song from Ernestine Anderson's album, Sunshine, with Monty Alexander, Ray Brown and Jeff Hamilton. The resemblance between these two pianists is uncanny, as well as the style if it is in fact Renzi.

  • Love it!......the Mike Renzi/Monty Alexander argument has been going on for over 2 years now.

Has anyone thought to contact Ms Anderson and ask?

Regardless, the posts keep this awesome performance alive :)

  • AS the person who posted this clip and has seen both Mike & Monty several times, I'm sure it's Mike Renzi

  • @JazzVocalFan It's Mike Renzi! Watch his piano work on the Peggy Lee DVD! It's Mike Renzi! Shy he hasn't recorded more as a trio is beyond me. He's just one of the best.

  • It's Mike Renzi! The guy in the video doesn't look anything like Monty Alexander!

  • i know mike personally what a guy

  • Monty Alexander,piano.

  • I'm sure that Mike Renzi has played for Ernestine Anderson (after all, he is one of the ultimate vocal accompanists): but NOT HERE!

This is definitley Monty Alexander. Trust me!

  • With all respects... definitley, definitley, definitely Monty Alexander, piano; definitley, definitley, definitley Kenny Clare (the late great Englishman), drums. No doubts whatsoever - I promise! (In fact, there's even footage from this concert featured in a real fine Germnan TV documentary on Monty Alexander's life).

  • Sorry dude. Its Renzi on keys. Same on the Peggy Lee clip.

  • Monty Alexander here, I'm certain.

(And I have seen Renzi play for Lee, though... do bear in mind that they did look alike at this time).

In fact footage from this concert is even featured in a fine German-TV documentary about ALEXANDER!

An d to correct the info above: drummer is the fine Englishman, ans a master in his own right: Kenny Clare.

  • Mike lives in Middletown, RI now. Commutes to NYC to do Sesame Street ( he's music director) from here. Plays local gigs. A good friend. Saw him last Wednesday. Trust me. Trust him. He did those gigs 15, maybe twenty years ago. His words. No need to fib. A class act.

  • I am going to her concert 12/01 in Minneapolis. I hope it will be good . I am bringing my 18 years old daughter and her 18 years old boyfriend. This will be his fist introdaction to Jazz. If he likes it I hope he will be hooked to jazz for life like my both kids are . I took my daughter to Dakota to see James Cotton when she was 16. She set 90 minutes without blinking. She loves jazz and blues now.

  • This is definitely Monty Alexander. Listen to his style.

  • Bluesy, jazzy and supremely passionate and deeply soulful, Ernestine Anderson deserves a Lifetime Achievement "Grammy Award" for her decades of sublime recordings and incredibly great performances...for sure one of the all time greatest~ Bravo Ernestine!!!

  • I did'nt work with , but ....

The pianist is Monty ALEXANDER . You have to listen....

The bassist is Ray BROWN .

  • With all due respect to experts and reliable sourses(beard or not)it´s undoubtedly Monty Alexander and not Renzi.I know both of them well. Also IMO it´s Kenny Clare on drums.Great clip BTW,THANKS!

  • Funny. I also though it was Monty Alexander. I don't know Mike Renzi though so...

  • I have been a friend of Mike Renzi for 30 years and he affirms that he played this gig with Ernestine Anderson. The bass player was the famous Ray Brown. It's a great performance!!!

  • I am a major fan of Monty. I was fooled for a few moments that this is Monty, but further study convinces me that Stan Gilmer's comments are reliable. Why are so many commentators calling JazzVocalFan a liar? He would not just fabricate the credits when he posted.

  • With piano, there is a slight look-a-like

with Mike Renzi and Monty Alexander. But due Alexander's piano style and the fact he's played with Ray Brown and Ernestine several X's before, I say Monty Alexander.

    Thanks for the post.

  • Pointless comparison with Dakota Staton. There is only one Ernestine, and her powerful, clean voice and wonderful interpretations are unrivaled. Our deepest gratitude to Ray Brown for reviving her career when no one else was noticing her!

  • I beg to differ; the pianoplayer is Monty Alexander

  • Its Mike Renzi. I know because I worked with him. Don't let the beard fool ya.

Giant player in his own right...Stan Gilmer.

  • Truly one of the 'greats' I do adore Ms. Anderson. THANX...

  • Now that we have a little Ernestine Anderson, how about the awesome Dakota Staton to really blow everyones minds. She is up there with Ella and Sarah. Some of her songs are to die for! Even I've got it bad and that ain't good with Ivie Anderson and Duke Ellington would be fantastic.

  • That's Monty Alexander on piano. Live at Concord was actually 1977- a fantastic album

Monty's one of the best. There's one chord sub he uses in his solo that is killer.

  • At our restaurant we used to play her stuff all the time- people loved her-asked who she was-wondered why not famous. Monty Alexander Ray brown Trio and her recorded a few albums all great. "Live at the Concord jazz festival 1979" is my favorite. Monty Alexander is his best with Ernestine and Ray Brown.

  • Huh? I just happened to be playing a 45 by her this morning. I have no idea who she is, but I do realize that I have heard of her. I have no idea where I got the 45, but I am glad to see this clip. Now I have to find some more stuff of hers to listen to.

  • Great Moments With Ernestine Anderson is an amazing album of hers. She's like butter on toast! Love her!

  • I Love Ernestine Anderson

  • That's the one and only Monty Alexander on piano

Who else in the world can play like that.

Ernastine is a great singer knows all the phrases.

  • I believe that is Mike Renzi on piano. Check the video description above. You can also do an image search on Google and compare photos of Renzi with Alexander.

  • I love it. Ernestine sounds great as ever and Renzi's piano riffs are so tasteful.

  • I want a great big grown up mature girl like Ernestine. She knows how to phrase a song perfectly.

  • She is one of my all time favorets!!!

  • I Love this Lady, she can sing anything.

  • saw her live in newyork..i didn't know she was ever this young, but hey that voice didn't change!!!

  • She's wonderful

  • Astonding!!! she truly is one "the greats" thanx...

  • Great legendary singer who is up with Ella, etc and incredible to experience in concert as this great clip shows...check out Ernestine's great Concord Records work as it is peerless...newest Love Makes The Changes is classic Ernestine and her Hollywood Bowl appearance several years ago drew standing ovations! Thanks for this great clip and more please! Bravo Ernestine

  • Love Ernestine Anderson! and wow...she looks like Randy Crawford--or at least here. Thanks!

  • This is with the Ray Brown Trio with Monty Alexander at the piano and Kenny Clare on drums at the Berlin Jazz Festival 1979. Great concert !!! Ernestine is great singer and not that known.
