Somehow i don't fall off after my horse refuses a 3ft jump then jumps it like a deer from stand still, yet I fell off my 18yr old overweight paint at walk bare back. I dont get it.
I watch this video all the time lol. It's my favorite on youtube and very well put together. The only riding critique I have is that yall have got to learn to be quieter on the reins with your whipping hand. A well-timed bat with the crop is an effective aid as long as your batting doesn't pull back on the reins simultaneously...but you are all damn ballsy riders!

I've been learning on a 7 year old greenbroke Arabian who is extremely spooky (Not the best choice for a first horse, but there were extreme circumstances) and never once have I fallen off, despite the spooks and scares that are pretty extreme. My Mom has ridden for 20+ years and has never, to the day, fallen off because of how she learned.

I have no doubt that these children are good riders, but I think, personally, that someone should tell them that the whip is only there to back up leg aids, and not as a punishment for refusal.. Therefore whipping them excessively will not make them jump a jump, it will just make them associate that jump, or jumping in general with pain. I'm not a parelli freak etc, and i do ride with a whip, I just think that a kick, and using your voice is much more effective if you give it a try?
@TessIeeeeO I agree actually, different trainers have different styles but I think some of the coaches we were with at the time taught us to be a bit whip-happy. These clips are up to 7 years old and we've been through a lot of trainers since then, and in the end I think we all prefer the coaches that don't condone excessive whipping.

@shekhinathedragon Well I guess you can say us eventers are the most risk taking equestrians. It takes a lot of guts to hop up and down platforms, jump into water, etc. Plus we have dressage and show jumping on top of all the scary cross country.
You riders are awesome! Those are some pretty hard falls it is great that all of you get back on and keep trying.

its rather disturbing to see riders who belive the only way to *disiplin* your horse is with a whip or spurs. It appalls me to see them use them with such force so happily! there is no need for it! if you cant ride compently with your horse with your natural aids then you are not a fit owner to be riding or owing that horse get a horse ou can ride without beating it into submission. @Cossy1065 whips and spurs aren't to control a horse or pony, you use your voice, weight and light hand signals, whips are an elongation of our legs and used for encouragement and spurs are there just to encourage not torture :) get it right ok? thanks :) x and don't say these people can't ride because they can btu are still learning, none of them is claiming to worlds best rider either so shhh now ;)

@Cossy1065 UM wow who isnt listening to your horse? I am in training with one of the worlds top bio mechanics in horses for pain free horses. The horse "Saga" in you videos is telling you she is in pain in her back sholder and hind quarters due to her overcompensating for her right side. True, its not personaly your fault. Many horse people only know to punish or try to use leg or rein to correct this, and dont know how to look and see pain. I know you probly wont belive me, most people dont...
@JazperTheEventer But you are correct, spurs are not to be used for punishment, and are mis used 90% of the time, "good equitation" tells you to turn your toes out, but this makes spurs abuse. To use then correctly you must open your hips (not hip angle) and turn toes in.

@Cossy1065 It comes down to this... would you rather a rider use a crop to get through a tough spot on a cross country jump, or have him roll his sholder and break it and be put down? As far as spurs, they are mad so nothing bigger thatn prince of wales (about an inch long) can hurt a horse no matter how hard you try, but are very helpful in dressage when you have around 50 different aids. It keeps your horse from getting frustrated and possibly hurting himself and you.

its rather disturbing to see riders who belive the only way to *disiplin* your horse is with a whip or spurs. It appalls me to see them use them with such force so happily! there is no need for it! if you cant ride compently with your horse with your natural aids then you are not a fit owner to be riding or owing that horse get a horse ou can ride without beating it into submission. I recognise tht not all of the clips are heavy handed but alot are i couldnt finish the video sickening

@DreamiPony no i dont like parelli i will have you know :) i just dont have to use whisps and spurs to control my horses or ponys. :)

@Cossy1065 whips and spurs aren't to control a horse or pony, you use your voice, weight and light hand signals, whips are an elongation of our legs and used for encouragement and spurs are there just to encourage not torture :) get it right ok? thanks :) x and don't say these people can't ride because they can btu are still learning, none of them is claiming to worlds best rider either so shhh now ;)

@JazperTheEventer i have seen spurs used as a diciplin when a roder feels the need to use *Aid* such as spurs and whips even things like market harboura they shouldnt be riding artifical aids are just another way to take away a horses will. If theses horses dont want to jump they were smacked hard more than once and kicked if they wanted to do it they would and anyone who thinks there is ntn wrong with this video is evidently the same and doesnt love there horse enough to listen to it

@Cossy1065 UM wow who isnt listening to your horse? I am in training with one of the worlds top bio mechanics in horses for pain free horses. The horse "Saga" in you videos is telling you she is in pain in her back sholder and hind quarters due to her overcompensating for her right side. True, its not personaly your fault. Many horse people only know to punish or try to use leg or rein to correct this, and dont know how to look and see pain. I know you probly wont belive me, most people dont...

@JazperTheEventer But you are correct, spurs are not to be used for punishment, and are mis used 90% of the time, "good equitation" tells you to turn your toes out, but this makes spurs abuse. To use then correctly you must open your hips (not hip angle) and turn toes in.

@Cossy1065 It comes down to this... would you rather a rider use a crop to get through a tough spot on a cross country jump, or have him roll his sholder and break it and be put down? As far as spurs, they are mad so nothing bigger thatn prince of wales (about an inch long) can hurt a horse no matter how hard you try, but are very helpful in dressage when you have around 50 different aids. It keeps your horse from getting frustrated and possibly hurting himself and you.

Until you show me you riding prelim on cross country with out a crop and without spurs, i will never believe a word you say. And your NEVER going to change the millions of eventers minds about crops and spurs. Its not a factor of the horse not wanting to jump, its a factor of in a tight spot the horse cant judge every jump and how much energy to go in with.
