SI interviewed Nick Charles before he passed away, and he cited this as being one of his favorite pieces of music, and the SI article linked to this youtube video, hence the talk about him at that point.
Nick Charles would have celebrated his 65th birthday today. Unfortunately, he passed on Saturday, June 25th. Nick was an American sportscaster and one of CNN's first on-air personalities. Battling cancer, he never gave up on life and enjoyed this particular piece of music because it always lifted his spirit. A quick Internet search (I'm sure that YouTube users know how to conduct a search) would have answered the question, "Who is Nick Charles?"
Im NOT here because of Nick Charles - but because I love music. And I'm sorry I also have no idea who this person is. Would anyone care to enlighten us ?
@mugge62 Hah! Well said! The music [and the man - Edward Elgar] is the thing. Beautifully performed by the young lady, and superb orchestra. Thank you for uploading this glorious piece
@colliecandle she's an Argentinian cellist, and she's becoming rather well known around Europe - I've seen her play twice, once in Manchester at the RNCM cello festival, and another time in Glasgow where she gave an AMAZING performance of Rococo Variations with the RSNO =)
It's like Shakespeare with a pen, or Turner with a brush. It's extremely rare, but sometimes, the English just utterly nail it. The cello belongs to Elgar...
I've always thought this sounds like Mahler's Adagietto from the 5th(?) symphony....the one used in Death in Venice. In many ways it's more personal and also tugs the heart strings more.
Amazing...one of the best cello concertos i have heard!!! Not to mention the cellist!!!! Sol Gabetta, you are an astounding cellist!!! keep up the amazing playing!!!!:)
Just a Elgar's signature composition.Just like you can tell Beethoven, you can tell Elgar's piece. There is a deep sadness right along with beautiful melodies.Love it...
By the way, I see that the tip of the fingers are curved even when only pressing one string . Is it in purpose, or just more comfortable to her? This is sometimes corrected when my girl does it.
From a technical standpoint your daughter should keep her fingers straight, as much as possible. But Sol plays beautifully, and technique only makes you more proficient, it doesn't influence your musicality, so I am not going to be the one to tell her to change for anything :)
She deserves so much more credit than she gets... Her technique may not, by appearance, be as good, but her sound is lovely and of course, that cello she plays on has such an amazing tone and you can tell, she is totally indulged in that instrument. Natalie Clein should not be any more well-known than Sol Gabetta is. Of course, Clein has the commercial side with her.
@kianskiputz92 Not famous enough! There needs to be more people than just us who needs to recognise how amazing she is. Noticed how her views have been going up a lot more recently though? ;)
is a pity, here in Argentina she's not known, she's an amazing musician with so much talent.. and on tv just you can see transvestite and gays singing so bad
@Diaboludus True, yet she's an excelente musician who'll be playing Elgar's cello concerto at Colon Theatre at November 4th, I already have tickets for that night.
Sublime... Es una maravilla poder deleitarme
con esta maravillosa pieza!!!
Un saludo,
Elsa

I can't believe this performance is the way Elgar composed it. Sounds like it was arranged for "easy-listening" radio.

This piece is so incredibly moving! It makes me wonder how one man can be inspired to write music that touches the heart like this....
..And then the cellist! Lovely girl. What a talent.
