John Denver used to come into Hayden,Colorado airport when i worked there in there mid 1980's. He had a nice Lear 35. He was always decent and personable. I was shocked and saddened by his death.
melissainhawaii....You stated that you last saw John Denver in concert in Hawaii in the spring of 2007...WOW....How did you manage that when he'd already been dead almost 10 years ?
John will always be with us. His musical genius lives on and I remember him and his music every time I take a walk in the great outdoors and remember his great passion for nature.
John Denver was born a rare breed. HIs legacy of music and what he tried to do for the environment will transend the ages. People 100 years from now will still be listening to his words that touch the soul with a smile on their face and warmth in their heart. Thank you John for the things you have given us. You are truly missed and loved.
I just love hearing John's passion in his voice and in his music. I get tears in my eyes every time I hear his wonderful voice. Thank you John. We miss you very much! RIP.
Since I was a baby, I new John's music and it has had a tremendous impact on my life. Saw him for the last time at a concert in Hawaii in the spring of 2007. Does any one know who the tall, brunette backup singer is, who appears in the very end of the final singing segment "County Roads"? She was in some of his other concerts, but (to my knowledge) not given credit in print or in, say, the PBS tribute to JD. Her demeanor and "western" presence seems to fit his songs.
@VisitNixaMo I believe her name is Pat Hoff or a similar spelling. John introduced her after singing Wild Montana Skies I believe, during his Wildlife concert...

@BOBBIE041957 - You are absolutely right. Problem is that too many young people work at these networks and have no first hand knowledge of what they write about and are too lazy to research what they don't know - which is a lot.
So poignant when he speaks of grandkids Greatly missed truly Earth's son he would be appalled at the oil spill and other man made disasters we only have one planet please treasure her in all her wondrous glory!!!!
John Denver was indeed a musical genius. I remember when I was in Middle School chorus, we sang one of his songs, "Grandma's Feather Bed" for our spring concert. That got me hooked onto his music. His music is never forgotten everywhere we all go. We celebrate his life by signing, playing, and remembering his music in a positive way. If we would have more people like John, he would be a big influence on these artists today. It's so sad that we don't hear anything like this anymore. :'(
1 year before he died I had the chance to go see him in concert but my husband said no . He said that we would see him again when he came back to D.C.....I told him "no that there would be no next time" I knew somehow that JD was not going to be around by that next year. I loved the words, the music, the guy soooo much.
I fell in love with his music the first time I heard. His music has been with me ever since. When I was a lonely man no where to go, no one to love, I sang out "Lost alone on some forgotten hwy..." so many times while driving my Volkswagen bug on "some forgotten highway" in Southern Illinois in the 70s. I am glad I went to see him at his concert in 1992 at Rosemont Horizon in Chicago.
Was on the way to uni when I saw the man opposite me reading a newspaper. I saw obitiary section JOHN DENVER. I was so gutted and shaken I got off the train and went home to recover. His music and spirit live on. I still have his entire vinyl record collection....... can't part with it.
He is the reason I became a singer/songwriter. His love for nature and all things God given, will never be forgotten. I saw him in Duluth, Mn when it was just himself, and bass player Dick Kniss. When I first heard him sing Rocky mountain high for the first time, I felt an ethereal and almost spiritual feeling. he will be missed, and I am so glad for all of these vids on youtube...he will live on in my heart.
A fuel switch, unrelocated, that he couldn't get to on the back of his seat, was the reason for his crash, loss of altitude. He was advised to have it relocated to the dash, which he didn't. I will always miss John. He taught me to learn and play guitar with love, compassion, and appreciation for Earth, God, and Life.

Greatness does not mean one is perfect. John Denver was a great man, but of course he was flawed. He came to embrace (heal from) his flaws, as all great people do. Right? A recording/video of his voice, his image, still brings a tear. I happen to believe that death is an illusion, and that this great man (spirit) is still singing.
Poems, Prayers, & Promises performed live on the "Spirit" album is the most beautiful expression of reflection I have ever heard... Listen to the beautiful music that accompanies even more beautiful lyrics....... You'll be glad you did...
This beautiful man was something special.... they don't make 'em like him anymore. It warms my heart and uplifts my soul to see everyone here speaking of him with such love and respect...I wonder if he truly knew just how much he was loved. I hope so...I hope so. He is greatly missed, even after all these years...
John and I share a lot of common things, except singing, I cannot carry a tune. I was sad for my brother the day John Lennon died........ I was DEVESTATED on October 12th 1997, while watching the CBS evening news, when a special bulletin announced John Denvers death.....well a part of me died also. for Annie and Windstar Studios hw will live on in our hearts (It's not what you take with you, BUT WHAT you leave behind.. he left allot
'To the Wild Country' was my favorite tune of his. That song really embodied his spirit for the outdoors more than any other, I think. If anyone out there hasn't heard it, take a listen. But then, he had so many exceptional songs. RIP John!
I have been a John Denver listener since the Chad Mitchell Days. He had a way with music and touched many a life, including mine. He was magnificent and had a unique sound and a style very few will ever had..... He loved nature and helped bring nature to us... God Bless him... he is very missed...
John Denver. Michael Jackson. Frank Sinatra. Elvis Presley. Lucille Ball. Johnny Carson. Jimmy Stewart. Gregory Peck. Grace Kelly. These people had true grace, charisma, talent, and something profound to contribute to this world. We who lived when these folks mentioned were alive truly miss the charisma and talent of artists such as those mentioned above. REAL charisma/talent doesn't come along that often.
Hey does anyone know what then name of his song was that went: "Peaceful valley animals and children asking me/tell the story that you told of sailors drinking tea/tell the one about the man who saddled up the wind of Pegasus and flying fish a cowboys memories"? last heard it in the 7th grade
13 years and we still haven't forgotten. I will continue listening to and playing and singing his music for anyone who will listen. We will always miss you John! R.I.P.
My sisters and I used to sit and sing all his songs in harmony while the older 2 played guitars. He gave us all a love of music, and it brought us close as a family. You can't sing those songs without feeling happy and more loving to others.
I have never felt such strong emotions for anyone like I do John Denver. His songs were inspirational and always brought tears to my heart. I have to say he'll be sorely missed by myself and all his fans here in Great Britain. He always liked nature and his songs always had that reflection on life. R.I.P
When I read on the cover of the newspaper that he died in a plane crash, something really hit me hard about his death. I grew up on his music and it always relaxed me as a kid and it put me asleep when I was too hyper. His music was my peace. To this day I am sad that he is gone. It is strange when I travel through West Virginia, I swear I feel his spirit following me as I drive through those mountains.
Fortunately, John's wonderful music lives on and thanks to the magic of recording technology, it sounds as good as ever - ready to be heard and enjoyed any time you choose.
@valerysgirl Such a beautiful comment, and his music was just as you say... Peace. I grew up listening to him as well and although I understand the emotions and sentiments behind it better now, I still feel the same when I hear it at 29 years old as I did when I was 5. Long may his music live on, and long may its creator be remembered as a gentle natured and genuinely passionate human being. The world needs more people like him.
I loved him too because he could not only sing but he had a brain as well. and i think fowl play might have been involved in his untimely death but who knows for sure, the CIA?
@tonybenn1000 There was no hint of foul play (or of drug/alcohol use, both of which he had a history of). Denver was in an experimental plane with which he lacked training. It is known he failed to refuel the plane prior to the flight, and it is believed he became confused with the unfamilar controls, several of which were unmarked and/or placed in nonstandard positions, while attempting to manipulate the fuel selector handle.
@valerysgirl You know, I wish my generation would love this music instead, and it breaks my heart to know that instead, my friends listen to rap instead.
wow... the most heartbreaking part of this tribute is when John mentions "with all his heart" he wants to go fishing with his grandkids... really hits me that he never got that chance... RIP John... you and your music will always be loved.
Wow, tugs at the heartstrings when seeing him again. I remember watching him on The Muppets and going to see the movie "Oh,God." Brings back such wonderful memories. Like it was yesterday.
Thank you for sharing this, and thank you for bringing me back to a more enjoyable time in my life. It is a trip down memory lane for me.
I love John Denver's songs since the 70's his songs of nature and love, relationships, helped to take me to a higher place outside myself as I thought of nature and the beauty of a eagle or the sun glistening on the water, or of letting go of someone I love due to death or of things not meant to be, and helping me to deal with the loss, He was a great musician , naturalist, entertainer, I miss him Carmie56
22yrs old hispanic from jersey and wen i was a kid my dad loved his music i remember my childhood of him singing different songs. . so i became a fan to im into all types of music
A DRUNK AND A DRUGGIE..... use your computer and check it out . when he died he was clean... but ... a has been!! give me a break, get a life people.. bigger fish to fry.
Sadly, John Denver did have problems with alcohol and he experimented with many drugs - according to his 1994 autobiography - TAKE ME HOME - no longer in print.
His personal life was often troubled and his second marriage to Cassandra a disaster.
Despite all his troubles, John Denver managed to write and perform beautiful music all over the world. Through the magic of recorded sound, we can still enjoy his talent today.
John's music is his legacy - and it's appeal is rich and lasting.
Many beautiful songs and one of the best FOLK singers ever.......I grew up as a kid in the Tennessee hills and listend to his music on the radio. I really did not like country music back then but, his music was different and was not twangy like country and that appealed to me. His songs always put a smile on my face......
His music made absolute sense in a world that made no sense at all. The first song I ever learned to play on the guitar was "Sunshine." I think I was about 15 at the time.
My ex-husband and I loved John Denver so much back in the day we named our son Zachary. Why? That was John Denver's son's name. We even moved to Colorado in 1978 because of John's music.
what a lovely story, he was loved right across the world and still is, its relaxing and dreamy music, now it like music when the world was a happier place. are you still in colorado, whats it like. brendan cya.
I seen John Denver in concert in 1980, the greatest show ever. To this day any time I see a video of him I cry a little and smile a little. I felt I lost my best friend the day he died.
All of the songs on the rejected album were either thrown away or rewritten and recorded on future albums. Not sure if the demo tape that he made those songs on is around or not - my guess - probably not!! They were a sad reminder that RCA had changed directions - and John Denver was busy saving the world. I think he was simply burned out - he'd been on the road - for basically 15 years by 1980!
Today he is the 4th highest selling singer in American history - with over 125 million albums sold!
I think John Denver wrote "Leaving on a Jet Plane". He did a great duet with Mama Cass Elliott on "The Midnight Special". I recorded it on VHS years ago. I should try to find it and post it!
John Denver was a giant. Many don't realize that it was John Denver who brought articulated acoustic guitar and banjo into the mainstream. He has never been appreciated for what he accomplished....partly because he was never part of the extreme protest movements. He was in it for the music. I am an accomplished player and historian myself and give him huge profs for bringing guys like Herb Pederson and John Sommer into the arena of popular music. He is a real icon.
I would like to set the record straight on one item, Leaving on a Jet Plane was a big hit for Peter Paul and Mary in 1967, but the song did not launch their career they were well established by then. In fact the recording launched Denver's career.
I first saw John in San diego..an opening act for Blood Sweat & Tears....he came out alone to perform his first song...and the mic on his guitar didn't work...it has been so many years that I can't remember the song, but his pure voice was amazing!!! I have been a fan ever since. Only the lord knows why he is still not making such beautiful music for us all to hear! I hope in the next life I will meet this special soul.
Would be great to tear that page out and re-write it, but that can't happen. We just have to enjoy and honor his musical talents and the music he passed on to us.
I will always love John Denver. Such an amazing talent, the world lost him too soon. Thanks for the tribute and John's music will live in our hearts and live on always...
I'll never forget John and the night we saw him in concert in Memphis,it was magical! John was an amazing artist and his clear, pure voice was one of the best.
Met John the night he opened with the Mitchell Trio...got to talking as fellow AF brats during intermission. Loved him from that night no and his works...his fame he put to good use. But his death bothered me. SHOULD never have happened to an AF brat and son of a test pilot. We lost so much with his passing.
I have every record and video that John released and the pain I felt that day as the news came through is still with me. I can still remember where I was and what I was doing. I don't think his voice will ever be equalled.
I remember being in 4th grade & the teacher showing us (at the time-new)films with him on the calypso wiith costeu and playing these songs on the ship! I was to buy tickets to his concert way back a year before his crash. I put it off till next time. mistake! great music- good man.
John Denver died in his experimental plane when his main fuel tank ran dry, and the manual switch that would switch over to the backup fuel tank was not located in the standard location. In the urgency of the moment, he could not find the switch, with tragic results. It's like putting your brake pedal to the right of the gas pedal in your car. In a sudden emergency, your foot goes to the wrong place. A poor design decision led to an incomprehensible loss to the world!
Yes, no matter how the accident happened. There is and always shall exist a part of his soul in all that listened. He is a person who left a positive impact in his presence, genius and peace towards all things.
He lives in our hearts and his music is forever. Let us teach our children his wisdom.
I still miss John Denver today. He was a force for good, and always sent out the same positive message, even when things weren't going well for him, and when the press ridiculed him for no good reason other than to amuse bored readers. In the end, looking at his stunning performances, and hearing his beautiful songs, and seeing that smile, I have to say: "John, you lived a beautiful life and touched millions, and your memory can just be summed up in one word - LOVE"
Yes, he was unique. His voice, writing, and guitar skills was superb! Here in Norway there are only three(!) of John's songs on the playing lists: Take me Home..., Annie's song, and Leaving on a Jet Plane. One day they suddenly played a lot of those songs and I couldn't quite understand why until I saw the news that night!! :-( His music will live on.
Seeing this video has come as a huge shock to be. Sadly I did not even know he had died. His music will live on, but with a different tinge to it now I have learned of this sad loss to the world. What a champion of music and of goodness we have lost.
"John Denver Killed In Plane Crash" Was as mind numbing as John Lennon, John F. Kennedy passing. (odd pattern with Johns!) John Belushi just to add another...He was special and have a hard time putting a label on what type of music he created. Wasn't really Country, Pop, Rock, Folk even!...He just wrote his heart down and THAT is his genius!!
I agree... I dont hear "country" or "folk" and i certainly dont hear "pop" but thats exactly what he was a musician who could sing about universal truth and what everyone shares... and it transcends the styles... there was an honesty about him and his music that is truly rare... more rare today than ever.
Damn man... you've written everything, i wanted to say... I began to love his music 1/2 year before he died... he filled me up with happiness... and then died... what a tragedy in my life... John, you were one of the greatest....
It was the middle of the night and I woke up to the news. I turned off the TV and went back to sleep, sure it was just a nightmare. When I woke up, the news was same. I couldn't believe it. I still can't. I took a trip to Aspen two years ago to visit the Windstar Foundation and see his memorial. It's very beautiful and you can buy a brick as a donation to continue his work.
I am czech woman. I know Denver's songs for long time, but just tomorrow I have got to know, that most of my favorite songs was written by one man, by one wonderful man. Thank you, John, thank you for the music...
I performed Country Road at the age of 6 in a pool hall. Our family was broken and my sis and I would visit Dad and Granny during the summer. Granny would listen to Country Road and cry her eyes out when we had to leave. Sure do miss JD. Made so much of an impact on my life. When I hear his music in stores, I still shed a tear. Thanks Dad for sharing his music with me.
I can remember the exact moment when I heard that John had died and something in me died in that moment to. It is just now that I can listen to him and feel nothing but the joy I always felt before.
I just finished watching a John Denver - Remembered special on PBS and here I am writing this.
Thanks for posting!!!!!
John Denver will always live in his music and my heart
thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this... priceless!
What a loss of wonderful talent. I have most of his albums (yes, vinyl). I am currently replacing them on CDs. Thank you John, for the wonderful memories that your songs keep alive in my heart.
I thank the good Lord I got to see him perform at least once. It was at an outdoor type of setting (Western Washington Fair) and he was absolutely priceless that night :). I will always appreciate what a wonderful memory he gave me from his performance that night.
I agree. I am almost 29 now. I saw him play in Newcastle City hall uk when I was 10, having known his music since I was born! It was the night I fell in love with not just music, but live music, still my greatest love today!
I will never forget how 'Calypso' became a celebration of music and moreover of life, and even at 10 being moved by 'wms' and 'RMH'
Met a guy in Aspen a few years back who'd laid his swimming pool for annie and his story was priceless.
Attended a John Denver concert in Calgary...the best concert I ever attended. I identified with his music because I moved to the rockies in 1975. Just as he sang in "Rocky Mountain High". I was born in the summer of my 27th year, going home to a place I had never been before. Thanks for the memories John
I Was 17 when he died, I was probably the only one my age blasting John in my car where everyone else was playing hip hop....Loved the man, music and what he stood for.
i was brought up with jd my dad was an avid fan, my own children now like the songs that he did, its a shame that he has gone but he left us with some lovley songs and we will always remember him.
It's so sad to read that John would say that "Nobody will care when I'm gone. I'm a nobody." It's always the great people that get taken early in life & downplay how great they really are. The same could be said about Karen Carpenter who cosidered herself a drummer who sang not knowing how great she really was! RIP all great humble people.
John Denver will live on forever! May we never forget his message of peace and appreciate nature.

Fortunately, John's wonderful music lives on and thanks to the magic of recording technology, it sounds as good as ever - ready to be heard and enjoyed any time you choose.
bctvguy 1 year ago 11
@valerysgirl Such a beautiful comment, and his music was just as you say... Peace. I grew up listening to him as well and although I understand the emotions and sentiments behind it better now, I still feel the same when I hear it at 29 years old as I did when I was 5. Long may his music live on, and long may its creator be remembered as a gentle natured and genuinely passionate human being. The world needs more people like him.

I loved him too because he could not only sing but he had a brain as well. and i think fowl play might have been involved in his untimely death but who knows for sure, the CIA?
tonybenn1000 1 year ago
@tonybenn1000 There was no hint of foul play (or of drug/alcohol use, both of which he had a history of). Denver was in an experimental plane with which he lacked training. It is known he failed to refuel the plane prior to the flight, and it is believed he became confused with the unfamilar controls, several of which were unmarked and/or placed in nonstandard positions, while attempting to manipulate the fuel selector handle.

His music made absolute sense in a world that made no sense at all. The first song I ever learned to play on the guitar was "Sunshine." I think I was about 15 at the time.

After doing so much to preserve mother nature it's not fair that he never got to do the things he mentioned with Grandkids.
As far as his music goes, I didn't consider him country either. His music didn't fit into any category. He had a genre all his own.

The Album that RCA rejected must exist somewhere. Denver songs we haven't heard?
Any ideas where they might be found?
SPINGOREB 2 years ago 2

He is a real icon.
thebigwhodo 2 years ago 7
I would like to set the record straight on one item, Leaving on a Jet Plane was a big hit for Peter Paul and Mary in 1967, but the song did not launch their career they were well established by then. In fact the recording launched Denver's career.

I first saw John in San diego..an opening act for Blood Sweat & Tears....he came out alone to perform his first song...and the mic on his guitar didn't work...it has been so many years that I can't remember the song, but his pure voice was amazing!!! A poor design decision led to an incomprehensible loss to the world!
pookypie3 2 years ago 6
Yes, no matter how the accident happened. There is and always shall exist a part of his soul in all that listened. He is a person who left a positive impact in his presence, genius and peace towards all things.

Peace from Norway.

"John Denver Killed In Plane Crash" Was as mind numbing as John Lennon, John F. Kennedy passing. (odd pattern with Johns!) John Belushi just to add another...He was special and have a hard time putting a label on what type of music he created. Wasn't really Country, Pop, Rock, Folk even!...He just wrote his heart down and THAT is his genius!!
laosandburma 3 years ago 5
I agree... I dont hear "country" or "folk" and i certainly dont hear "pop" but thats exactly what he was a musician who could sing about universal truth and what everyone shares... and it transcends the styles... there was an honesty about him and his music that is truly rare... more rare today than ever.
