No, I think the reason for the change was because the manga hadn't been completed and the anime caught up with it. Since they couldn't really continue further, thy had to finish on the assumption that Akito was a boy because it hadn't been revealed in the manga yet. It's also why Rin and Kureno were never introduced.

@hellkitten94 well the problem really was that there was only 6 volumes out when they started animating but that doesn't excuse how much they epically fucked up. Natsuki Takaya (the author) I think got sick or had something wrong with her hand so stopped writting/drawing for like a whole year.

They still left out a LOT of litttle things from the manga though that ended up being important.

The Sohma family is cursed and 13 members of it are cursed with a Zodiac animal (with one being the cat and it was supposed to be one, but it was tricked) and when someone of the opposite gender hugs a person cursed with it, they will turn into that animal, but if someone who is cursed with it and hugs someone else who is also cursed with it, nothing will happen.

@TheXboxReviewer The anime is Fruits Basket. It is the story of the Sohma family. Some of the members are cursed. When they go through a lot of stress or when they are hugged by a member of the opposite gender, they transform. They turn into one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac and the cat. The transformation has smokey exploding effects. After being an animal, they eventually change back to human, with same special effects. Then they are butt naked! :)
