Fantastic presentation. I also had to watch this for a class. test tomorrow haha. so very worth it. I use youtube to reach people all over the world who participate in "tricking" an underground sport where our connection hub is youtube and various forums. Our flips, twists, and kicks along with the other underground movements are seen by countless people worldwide. Our community is one of the thousands or hundreds of thousands or more that call youtube.... home....
With SOPA how are we to show our new friends us doing the next Soulja Boy Superman dance? Why should I continue to watch YouTube when TV could be more entertaining???
and he only taped on the surface, he forgot about meme, and scarcism on the "related" videos..... as someone is watching a cat eating food, but the top related video is a shark. Top comment you'll read in that vide would be "I like that part where the cat ate food".
I love the fact that wether we like it or not, or better put 'wether we know it or not', we are a part of and international, interemotional and intergrating system. But who is studying everyone? That's the beauty. We are not being studied by anyone, but we are studying ourselves. It is an amazing system of theories and use.
every second that I watch of this video validates every point in my thesis. It has been a har ficght, universities in Colombia do not validate internet as a source of anything. This makes me want to fight harder for my goal.
Sincerely this is my favorite video on Youtube. It makes love and understan a little better Youtube, the Internet, people, vloggers, vlogs, the world, my camera, and most important of all... myself.
The fundamental thing you have shown is the new way of human nature. We all wish to be apart so be can be safe and free, but all human beings wish to be joined in spirit, emotionally, and in thought. I cannot wait for when we can have a wifi computer chip in our heads allowing us to connect to any and all other people on the planet and that experience will dwarf anything realized yet in life. It will become a new consciousness, an awareness that will shake the very core of the meaning of us.
SOPA is all about money. The web companies are now forces to pay legal bribes to Congress through lobying... Or they'll sell out to the Entertainment industry who makes very large "donations" already.
I wonder what this presentation would look like today? So much has changed in only a couple of years. The internet moves so quickly! LisaNova and lonelygirl15 are replaced by other people. What did they bring to the table and who's going to eventually replace them?
This only has 1.7 million views and all the videos they are talking about has 30 times that! only if everyone new about this amazing story......Walter Fisher is my boy, Human being are story-telling machines........numba one rule since Day one son! - (Montez from "Workaholics" on Comedy Central Voice)!
Awesome video, YouTube is 6 year old only, the video is from 2008, three years ago and the data is stunning, imagine what it is like nowaday, how many hours of video are uploaded every minute, how can a simple video can become viral and get millions of views... we're really living in the fast lane
And then there’s that dance song in the video whose lyrics actually include “Aha”! ... We’re still in “the Garden.” We never left. We just believed we did. Everyone’s invited to this Garden Party. The venue is the tiny blue dot.
@mwesch I was going to ask this on your channel but it appears that you don't accept commentary there. What are your thoughts on the new youtube redesign?; both the portal page as well as channel restructuring. Personally I dislike it because it makes the actual experience more difficult and slows the entire process of discovering new content.
So right now I am thinking about myself watching a youtube video about people watching youtube videos about people making youtube videos about people making youtube videos about youtube videos?? I think....
This is the third time that I've watched this video and I love it! Thanks to Dr. Michael Wesch, I know what I want to do with my education beyond my Bachelor's degree. I have even considered moving to Kansas to study with him.
Over-the-top-AWESOME! Also see Tom Shadyac's "I AM documentary, which asked "What's wrong with the world? And how do we fix it?" This video proves we ARE fixiing what's wrong with the world, which has ALWAYS been our belief that we are not connected.
@bizb Michael Wesch is a genius for connecting the dots LITERALLY between Carl Sagan’s “pale blue dot” description of the earth as seen by the astronauts to our webcam’s “little glass dot, the eyes of the world.” As the old saying goes, “The eyes are the windows to the soul.” The internet and your sharing Digital Ethnography’s findings are helping us ALL also connect the dots between the (English) words soul and sole.
@bizb@bizb Are all other languages THIS metaphysical?!? The word “sole” was first used in the 14th century, and it originates from Anglo-French ‘sul’, ‘soul’, ‘seul’, which is from the Latin ‘solus’ which means “alone, having no companion/friend/protector, lonely, only, single, unique.” Lonelygirl15…Hmmm…
And then there’s that dance song in the video whose lyrics actually include “Aha”! ... We’re still in “the Garden.” We never left. We just believed we did. Everyone’s invited to this Garden Party. The venue is the tiny blue dot. ;-D
Shoot, I was just going to watch the first 10 minutes and I thought I'd get bored. Now I'm intrigued and want to watch more, but I can't I have class! I'll be back, don't worry.
Well I was about 3 minutes into this when I looked at video's total length and thought "eff that, I'm only going to watch like 7 minutes of this." I didn't even think YouTube supported 55 minute uploads or that I would go against my better judgement and watch this entire presentation. But this was great!
If my roommate wasn't asleep on the other side of the room I would take your challenge and try my own video blog. Maybe I still will tomorrow.
This video was absolutely beautiful. It gives people a lot to chew on as far as society today and exactly how much media and the internet are connecting us even though we're isolated within our own little home, car, or where ever someone is taping.
Excellent Video! I really enjoyed it. If you're interested in these subjects you may also like the work being done by BEWARE OF IMAGES. It's a feature-length, animated documentary about the history of visual representation. The movie explores the intricate relationship between the technology, regulation and social effects of mass media. You can use youtube to find the true beliefs of the people, not the politically correct things people say to you. You find true attitudes and ideologies because people have their internet masks on. I cross reference the youtube videos with contradictory ones to then use critical thinking to determine certain truths that would otherwise be impossible without google and youtube.
this video was my inspiration to join the amazing community of youtube :) I used to just be a watcher, now it's my turn to be watched as well. Thanks so much for this awesome vid :D

This video was on my relates from my vlog, which I just started vlogging and it was on my 2nd video. @iUseDMR Oh my god! That's what I was thinking, but I didn't want to say anything because I didn't want to be condemned, but I smiled when I saw that you were brave enough to type this comment!
There is a lot to think about here and it is amazing how culture, communities, and individuals have been shaped by youtube and other sources of media.
My anthropology class at UC Santa Cruz has over 300 students (many of who are not going to watch this youtube video because it was not required by the wonderful professor) anyway more than 25 student will probably watch this video, which will boost the number of views. So, why should people base the popularity of a video on the number of views?

Wow, that was something! It really deepened my understanding of the society, the ongoing processes in it, and the importance of Internet around the globe. Thank you!
And also, thank you YouTube for making all this possible!
I actually watched the whole thing just for fun....awesome...it helped me to make sense of things...thanks for putting this together...as a person with a disability, Youtube and the internet have have changed my life.
was linked here from my cultural anthro professor, beautiful, or at least provocative. i didn't think i'd sit through the whole 55 minutes, but i really couldn't believe it when the video ended and it had already been an hour. great work
All of this is made to distract you. We have more information, and less knowledge. The internet is not real connection. Our connection, the true WE, is not in the physical realms. This is no substitute, nor shall it ever be.
Only had to watch the first 10 min for my english and ended up watching the full video thank you. Some of the best english homework set.

Got the feeling that this is describing what TV will be like in a few more years ....
- More interaction - More diversity - More free hugs !
More user generated content ....
( maybe even the next NumaNuma ? )
.
Less reruns, spam ( advertising ) & network "executive" generated trash.

@Pokemeister1202 Well-researched
In the Arab world, people feel the shame that people such as Westerners and Europeans
Do not feel they are free
You will notice that they hide their faces
Of course differ from state to state
The Arabs who live outside the Arab countries, they are more freedom, and sometimes find them afraid
In the Arabian Gulf: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, kuwait, Bahrain, Yemen, United Arab Emirates, Oman

@Pokemeister1202 : Hide their faces, especially those who play music
You will find more videos of them, male more than females
Because the women's is shame, it's customs, traditions, and Religion
by the way I am number 1,666,999. good Luck

All of this is made to distract you. We have more information, and less knowledge. The internet is not real connection. Our connection, the true WE, is not in the physical realms. This is no substitute, nor shall it ever be.
