  • Love the way you utilized the different media. Great tutorial.

  • Absolutely amazing work. I just bought some prismacolor markers today to get back into my drawing and didn't know how to actually use them but your tutorial has shown me well. Thanks for this!

  • hi i just purchased a set of prisma color markers premier and i was wandering can copic markers mix with prisma markers

  • What kind of substrate,Parker do you use. Great video

  • Wow. I have never seen someone use oil glaze over color pencil before. That's a really interesting idea. (I'm an intermediate user of both)

What sort of paper do you have to use to support the paint and such?

  • how do you feel about copic vs prisma?

  • Cool stuff. This video was easier to find than I thought :o)

  • I know it's a stupid question, sorry, but what kind of color pencils are you using? I like using watercolor pencils, but I am looking for a new media/methods and the method you use with markers, then pencils, and oil paint seem really cool, but oil paint or oil pastels dont go with watercolor does it? What mixed media method ywould you reccomend to go with watercolor pencils? :) Btw I only just stumpled upon your videos, so sorry if you have already mentioned what pencils you use.

  • @TheQueenOfStupidity There is no such thing as a stupid question!!!! If you don't know, you don't know......how else you gonna find out the answer? You could guess or you can ask! Hold your head up

  • in lanscape design we just started using the chartpac markers this year, and we add the pencil crayons too. we used the prismacolors last year. i find the prismas don't bleed as much as the chartpacs, but the chartpacs blend so nicely.

  • alchohol-based markers....

  • hi!! im a industrial design student and i would like to know if you could make a tutorial video showing how to represent different textures or materials with chartpaks and prismacolor

thanks a lot!! this video was very helpful

  • Have you tried Copic markers? They blend efficiently.

  • you are a great presenter. Are you a teacher somewhere or something?

  • what a marvelous artist.

  • Jordan

  • My experience with oil paint is that it rots and slowly yellows paper. Do you have any suggestions about this?

  • Great video, I had no clue on how to use/blend markers.

  • I was wondering can I mic Oil Pastel with Prisma Markers well? Or would it be a strange combination?

  • i was wandering if u need expensive markers to get still proffesional looking results

  • Did you go to art school or are you naturally good?

  • Where did ypu start off with art what style?

  • Hello, I ran across your you tube video of the basketball player today. Is there a brand name for the bleed proof paper? Also, what brand markers do you like? And what type of color pencils do you use when mixing markers, pencils and oil paint? Watercolor or regular Color pencils? Also I paint with the water soluble oil paint would that work for a final layer? Sorry for so many questions but I LOVE your work and the way you layer with markers, pencils, and paint.

  • This was soooo helpful dude you are pro!

  • the paper you use is.... ?

i really wanto to know it becase its seams supports the oil, water and the markers

  • Actual time spent on making this lovely piece of art?

  • Wow thank you for posting this video. I am trying to get into an illustration program and I will definitely practice using markers. If i have any questions i will definitely ask!!

  • hi your work is amazing. i could never do that. and when i first used oil paint i hated it. im more of a simple acryllic person. but you are really amazing

  • Would you do an example of scales like lizards or fish with markers? but i have a tough time doing that

  • You are fantastic. Watching you is like magic n I love oil too. Tfs.

  • what brand of markers did you use for this?

  • i wish here sold that kind of markers :C motherfucking country ........

  • did u have to draw the outline several times to get to what u wont because i tend to draw it several times. cool drawing

  • Your New process it pencil marker colored pencil oil pastel and oil paint have you ever thought of using crayon in between the colored pencil and the oil pastel if you do can you please email me the results at my you tube email?

    Thanks

    Eaglefrern

  • where can u buy the markers & paper?

  • @ductoworld07 prismacolor markers are sold at michaels but idk about the paper

  • Do you have any tutorial on any landscape or seascape drawing? I'd like to see some tricks on grass, trees, mountains, waves, etc. Thanks!

What is the effect of liquin as a top layer mixed with oil? Doesn't it weaken the paper?

You did an excellent job, by the way.

  • it's funny when someone who's verry good a drawing has bad handwriting that my case... W/E good vid man really helped me cuz i study architecture and um really hatted markers do to my lack of knowledge of how to use them

  • wouldn't it be good to draw picture only with illustration marker and color pencils. i just want to know if i can achieve same with those two.

  • cool....really good!!!!!! its just too much work haaa haaa

  • The limits I believe will rely on not using too much ink from the marker because then it gets all sticky and can really make it even, for a background for example. Also, I use the belnder or a lighter tone, or just the same marker with a quick slight mark or line and right away I pass a tissue to creat lights. It leaves a lighter space where I pass the ink plus the tissue.

    Thanks!

  • Hi! I was looking for the illustration markers history and ran into this video. Just a question. About the markers limit you mention that you can not mix colors aside from the overlapping I think you can. I use a paper here called in Mexico "papel trapo", don't know the name for that in english and colors can blend perfectly. You can make shadows by using the complementary colors of each one and it blends great.

  • is this microsoft sam?

  • wow what an amazing video . i just searched for some ideas and found your video...and i would like to start now in this moment to draw. keep in watching your videos. ;) mandy regards erandhi

  • this drawing is a piece of shit???

  • absolutely terrific. thank you for sharing.

  • does the chartpak markers stands for a long time??(ink)

  • amazing i wish i could draw that goo i could not draw like that in my dream

  • amazing i wish i could draw that goo i could not draw like that in my dream

  • what is ur opinion on Copic markers? i saw tutorials on these.

  • Comment removed

  • did you use a photo as a reference and if so do you have any illustrations that are completely from your head??

  • Oh of course he's black!

  • pubes.

  • could u give me one of your draws? ill pay!

  • Lookin' like Kobe. Great instructions

  • A basketball player? The gentleman? Common, thats mike! Great instructions btw

  • This was a great help, there are fewer darker skin tone tutorials in youtubeland. thank you!!

  • seen ur vids love em and im about to buy a whole shitload of prismacolor deluxe i wanted to make sure i bought the colors for skin tones both white black and brown u know what colors i would need for that again great work stay up- youngsta

  • heres a cool tip with Prismacolor markers- use a plastic palette and put your color on there then use the colorless blender by Prismacolor as well and mix the the colors together. Then put the blender in one color then the other and then go back to the original color and there you have custom colors :) also great drawing

  • Hey awesome sketch! I really like it!

I just bought some TOMBOW Markers because they where cheaper than copic...

was it a stupid thing too buy the Tombow markers instead of Copic?

  • @TheWilliamFaber I got Tombows, then I wasn't happy with them (mainly because I had few colors). Now my dad was nice and chipped in for me to get a 24 prismacolor marker set. Also copic are freaking outrageously expensive, so prismas are the next best.

  • WOW! I can't make a drawing like that in my most beautiful dreams!

  • hey what type of illustrator are you ?

  • Thanks for your informative tutorial (especially on the greys!!) and your even better website!

  • For some reason, that basketball player reminds me of MJ...

  • I was thinking about getting prisma markers. Anywho have you eer tried to draw with sharpies?

  • Amazing...didn't even know these markers existed! I agree ...taking a step back can help you see so many things you are missing in a drawing!

  • Thank you so much for this video. I am about to try the prismacolor markers and I need all the help I can get. Wonderful work, great videos!

  • This is great! I never thought to put oil paint on top of colored pencil/marker. Thanks!

  • nice

  • wouldn't the multiple gray tone usage create an unrealistic tone to the skin?

  • @kk4christ777 Not really, the skin is neutral to low in chroma. Any areas which look artificial can be edited with color pencil.

  • hello. Excellent video. I was wondering if the chartpak ad markers with blenders would be a proper tool in a graphic novel, or that they are too paint-like. Please respond! thanks

  • @kk4christ777 I think that they would be perfect for a graphic novel. They are very much like watercolor paint, but you do not have as much control of the intensity of the color (which is why I sometimes use them in combination with color pencils as you saw in this video). I hope that this helped.

  • ur hand writting is horrible ... surprising cuz ur drawing is fine. Or u just copied most of the lines from an existing picture ?

  • @ContempoREX No your right! My handwriting makes doctors say DAMN!!!!! :)

  • @kazanjianm haaa haaaaaa same here i cant write but i know i can draw

  • @kazanjianm I've read that artisit and other right-brained people are more likely to have underdeveloped penmanship. I forget why but I think its true. I can draw well and my handwriting looks very similar to yours. (It's so bad that my fourth grade English teacher can still recognize it as mine.) Thanks for the video. I had never thought about putting oil over colored pencil but it seems to work well.

  • @ContempoREX hand writing has nothing to do with drawing my writing is horrible but if i want to some of the best handwiting i can as if i were writing cursive

  • do you have a more detailed video in which you explain the entire process?

  • man nice work but. what kind of paper you recomend me to use whit the chartpak?

  • @Tlalocquez I use bleedproof marker paper. Check out the "supplies I use" section of my website....or the link in the video description.

  • hey this is awsome!!! Im making my own hand drawn illustrations for my book .. This is a great way to give the art a printed effect. If i scan my art work will it be just as clear or will the scanner bleede through the art 9 giving it a dull look)?\

    Thanks

  • Do you ever render interiors? Your work is great and I would love to see how you use the marker in combination with colored pencil to create an interior space emphasizing how to know where to put the highlights and shadows. Thanks!

  • Liquin, what does that stuff do exactly? Does it make the colored pencil blend with oil painting or...?

But nice videos, you got me subscribed :D.

  • were can i get the markers at

  • @firebman261 most art supply stores.....check out my article (which rates the brands) first....the link in the video description will take you there.

  • best ever

  • @Jrlemebbder :)

  • Hello. I've just found out your videos and loved them. I am not a professional artist, but like to do some work myself. Your videos are very instructive. Congratulations.

Could you please clarify me what is that little stuff that you use to make white hilights at 7:16?

    Thanks.

  • @oalternativo Its brand is Prismacolor Art Stix (spelled like that) White......All it is is a LARGE color pencil....Thank you for the compliment on my videos! :)

  • really great video!!!..and great article!!! . i just buy some of these markers, is there some way i should take care of theme or doesnt matter? (way to expensive to let them dry!!!)

and if u have tips on how to put lights in objects (especially crystal) with these markers are more than welcome!!! thanks!!!!!! :)

  • @lore0603 Just keep the caps on! They will last you a long time. I have had to replace my most used colors once (and nothing else) in about 4 years.

  • has anyone ever told you that you sound a great deal like Stan Lee?

  • @matthewwilloughby83 Were both New Yorkers!!! :)

  • what kind of markers are those

  • What is the difference between Pantone and Copic Marker colors?

  • @macjsus Little really. I have messed around with them a few times. I have more experience with the AD Chartpak and prismacolor though.

  • Great Tutorial! I prefer Copics or Pantones because of the mass variety of tones, etc. I also love Chartpaks, but, for some reason, they smell a bit. Have you tried the Tria Tri tip markers? ( I have them, they're great, but the nibs can fall out :( )

  • Great tutorial, it was very helpful

  • @InnovationalFilms Im glad it helped! :)

  • @InnovationalFilms Im glad it helped:)

  • Hi kazan I have a question for you. I'm in 7th grade and since 5th grade I've been teaching myself how to draw manga from online websites. I'm just beginning to draw full bodies with decent skill, but I'm pretty good with the overall head. I was given some black fine inking markers which I use for my better drawings.

Question is: Should I start experimenting with art markers at my current skill or should I wait till I get a bit better? I am going to take art at my school next year to get better.

  • Go for it! Absolutely! I think the reason that my process is the way that it is because I make SO MANY mistakes! BUT there is ALWAYS a CREATIVE way to fix them! Good luck and let me know how it goes!

    -Merrill

  • Thanks! this is great!

  • No problem! Thank you too for the comment!!!

    -Merrill

  • ok i spoke too soon lol. too eager about those markers

  • Whats your ipinion on copics? are they worth it?

  • NOPE!!!!! I like AD Chartpak the best.....Half the price. Twice the ink

  • how much does do AD Chartpak cost and where can i find them? amazing tutorial and marker skill btw

  • Penzills, that is always appreciated! Thank you for your kind comment. .....They generally cost about 2 dollars per marker individually....you get a slight discount if you buy them in a set......

  • Is it true the smell is overwhelming? One of my friends said they can smell like dead fish :)

  • Im so used to the smell now that I dont even smell the markers anymore! The lack of Oxygen enhances my creativity!!!.. They do have a strong odor but it certainly doesnt smell like dead fish.

    -Merrill

  • Which brand of markers do you think is the best to use if you are a beginner?

  • Probably Prismacolor....It bleeds less.....I wrote a whole article with tips for beginners,......hit the link in the video description. I hope that it helps!

    -Merrill

  • thanks! :)

  • good job. i favorited this vid. it'll be good reference when i use my markers. i only use prismacolor cool greys. 5 stars!

  • Evan,

Thank you for the fav (and the 5 star rating). Congratulations on becoming a YT Partner! I applied in early January and I havent heard anything yet. If you dont mind me asking, how long did it take you to hear back from them? Thanks!

    -Merrill

  • @kazanjianm I submitted my application Oct '09. They approved me last week. It took them 4 1/2 months to get back with me.

  • Thanks Evan!

    -Merrill

  • Excellent job on the drawing , the colors really come to life ! :)

  • GContelli, thank you for all of the support that you have been giving me!

    -Merrill

  • I gave you a 5 Star for being such a Good teacher. You have a God Given Talent and I thinks its Wonderful you take the time to Share your Gift with others. Thanks! ~Andree'

  • Andree,

I always appreciate your comments, but I appreciate the comment on my teaching the most! I have made it my personal mission to provide good art instruction on youtube. For perspective, I teach Special Education now because Art has been slashed from the budgets of almost every NYC school. While SPED is pretty cool too, my goal is to build a presence on Youtube so that I can advocate to bring art back. So that compliment that you just gave me truly means a lot!

    -Merrill :)

  • man ur awesome. That sorta looked like Michael Jordan;)

  • It wasnt meant to be but....MJ is buried deep in to my subconscious mind (nightmares) since I am a Knicks fan (with a paper bag over my head). Thanks Bradzter(TWENTY THREE)!!!!!!!

    -Merrill

  • MARKERS! YAY!! I needed to learn about this~ Thanks~

  • No prob DHTora16!

    -Merrill

  • Wow you did an amazing job with this! Other "instructional" videos should take note of how well done this is. I have a couple questions. One, would thick bristol board be ok for marker? I have both plate finish and vellum. I am guessing smooth paper is preferred? Secondly, if you could recommend a versatile starter palette of around 12 colors, what would they be? Thanks!

  • I truly appreciate the compliment on the tutorial. The article that I wrote covers starter palettes (the one I linked to in the video description). It really depends upon what type of art that you do.......at the bottom of the article, I made short notes about many products (that have various starter palettes based upon type of art)... I hope it helps!

  • THANK YOU! :)

  • Thank you so much! I've just gotten back into the art thing after a long hiatus, and your tutorials are amazing for learning. Keep up the great work.

  • Stick with the art thing michka19!!!!!! Its good for the soul! Thank you for the big compliment on my tutorials!

    -Merrill :)

  • :D grate tutorial, makes me want to start markers..

i have a question .. i use watercolor , pencil an charcoal but wherever i try something like acrylics it turns out not so well, so i tend to stay away from new media ... is there any way to help boost my confident with media i may not be use to?

  • Hi theTRUE1414,

Please know that every person, including me goes through an arkward phase when they try new media.....But think about it this way- Each material is a MEANS to an END... I.E.-Watercolor is a means to the end of expression through transparent color.....But art is the process of IMAGE MAKING...and we limit our expression when we limit the media that we use.....In music, a guitar can only make a range of sounds..But great music is made when the right sounds are put together....

  • thank you very much for replying, i think that is very true... like i always wanted to try acrylics because iv seen it produces fine art, but i think its that i dont want to make mistakes.. ill try be mor eocnfident with trying new stuff :D

  • I always go in with the mentality that I KNOW that I am going to screw things up! LOL......But there is always a creative way to fix things!

  • nice vid merill ur quite the basketball fan eh?

  • Honestly,

Yes, I am a basketball fan (Kincks loyalties....GOD HELP ME)......But I am a baseball NUT! (Mets Loyalties...GOD HELP ME EVEN MORE!). I got a whole bunch of requests for the LeBron James Video.....Which led to the Kobe Video....and this one!

  • Awesome as always. You are not just a great teacher but a great inspiration also. Keep it up ;)

  • Wow! I truly appreciate that! Thank you MrYesirom!

    -Merrill

  • 5***** u r very informative &helpful.

i wish i was one of ur art students LoL!! but i do consider u a teacher since i've learned quite a bit 4rm you here on youtube.

i use acrylics and prismacolor pencils but since viewing ur vids i got interested in illustration markers. i chekkd out ur website &i think ill get a couple packs of crayola markers just 2c how i like working with them &if i like the results then i'll eventually invest in a pack of prismacolors.

    thanks 4this vid Mr. K.

  • Believe me! That means a TON! I have "taken my teaching to youtube" because NYC keeps slashing art teaching jobs (I teach Special Education now...which is cool.....but I would rather do and teach art)...Sorry to vent, I just wanted to put my appreciation in to context!

    -Merrill

  • you're my idol :D

seriously though you post awesome videos

  • Whoa! Very flattered! Thank you for the motivation to keep posting! I truly appreciate your comment bluejays24!....BTW, Im a baseball NUT (my loyalties are w/ the Mets...God help me!)...Is bluejays24 a Rickey Henderson reference?

  • Samurai THANK YOU too! As always!

  • Great talent.

    Mesmerizing video.

  • Wow! I truly appreciate that!!!! Thank you!

  • How much did you pay for your markers?

  • I think it was 230 dollars. I remember being shocked about that but I use them constantly and only a few have needed to be replaced.

  • 230 $ wow

  • I hear that!

  • And that was 3 years ago!
