I filed for unemployment in January of 2010, benefits have run out, and I still have not found a job. I have always looked for a job, even when I didn't need one. Sometimes I just wanted to see if I'd even get a call back on some positions back in 2006 or 2007. But I have "NEVER" seen the job market this bad. There has usually always been enough to go around. We just have way to many people on our planet, and way to many right here in the USA. There isn't enough to go around.
I am 38 years old. Worked since I was 16 years old. Worked full-time since I was 18, sometimes 2 jobs because when you younger you want the hours big time, you have the energy to pull 3rd shits and stuff. I think that a good plan would be to have declining extensions, so that with each 13 wek extension benefits drop by 10 percent so that the incentive to work at a discount finally reaches equalibrium and people accept what the market will currently bear.

The unemployment rate for the nation is 17.5%. Things are tough out here in California. I am about to go on my 2nd unemployment extension. Kicking out the illegals does not solve anything, it would cost millions of dollars, and we cant afford it. The immigration solution is to remove the incentives for people to want to come here illegally. No amnesty, no anchor babies, no State funded healthcare or housing, no drivers license, strict laws and repercussions for any business which employs non-permitted immigrants for any reason, end the war on drugs, and abolish the minimum wage, just for starters.

UE benefits, sorry they were never designed to be extended time after time, was only supposed to be a temporary benefit. If you can't find work in one period its time to get some place you can work or change your lifestyle to something you can afford. One messure that would help is for the States to drastically cut or eliminate residential property taxes,& go to a sales or " Fair Tax " system. That way people who are between jobs would be less likely to lose their homes.Those who pay off mortgages would actually own their homes & be safe.
Before it gets to the point where you cant even eat, make sure you become friends with farmers and I would bet my ass they would be happy to have you live nearby or on their land, work for them, and get food and stuff from them. At least you will eat.

I think that a good plan would be to have declining extensions, so that with each 13 wek extension benefits drop by 10 percent so that the incentive to work at a discount finally reaches equalibrium and people accept what the market will currently bear.
Here it is a year later and things haven't gotten worse, but it is only slightly better, not a real recovery.

I worked for the same company for eleven years I got laidoff July 08 collected unemployment till December 09 went back to to my old job worked three weeks the end of Jan 2010 then collected again @ the same time looking for a new job NOTHING! Went thru the tiers of extention's as of july 2010 $450.00 a week ran out of money then I called lastweek they looked @ my last qua and said I qualify for $85.00 a week will that change after the president sign's the bill by the way I'm in Cali

The unemployment rate for the nation is 17.5%. Things are tough out here in California. I am about to go on my 2nd unemployment extension. I hope everything goes smooth with the process as I have read that it will kick in automatically. Many blame Bush but blaming Bush or Obama does not put food on the table and a roof over your head. I have also thought about leaving California. Good question is "where do we go". States like Texas and Florida will soon be seeing California refugees =o

Kicking out the illegals does not solve anything, it would cost millions of dollars, and we cant afford it. The immigration solution is to remove the incentives for people to want to come here illegally. No amnesty, no anchor babies, no State funded healthcare or housing, no drivers license, strict laws and repercussions for any business which employs non-permitted immigrants for any reason, end the war on drugs, and abolish the minimum wage, just for starters.

The problem is, the money would have to come from you and I through taxes. The government does not produce anything. It is not a business and is not capable of operating like a business. There would not be any new jobs created, just more taxes, and the illegals would just come right back the next month because the incentives to be here would still exist. Government does not create wealth, only private business can do that.

UE benefits, sorry they were never designed to be extended time after time, was only supposed to be a temporary benefit. If you can't find work in one period its time to get some place you can work or change your lifestyle to something you can afford. By the way, have been on UE a total of 3 times in my life never longer than 10 weeks. Now as private contractor am not even eligible. So tell me how that is fair, I pay taxes too. Your house's and stuff is more important than mine? UE laws say so

BUT what about the job situation? If there is no work then how will they ever get back on their feet? At least until the situation gets better. The longer there are no jobs then eventually help resouces run out and people end up on side of the street w/signs begging to work for food. People w/kids too. Every kid deserves a roof over their head as well as every adult. I do not have money to give I am on disability but I have two empty bedrooms and thers alot of people like me. CAn help w/shelter

I salute your desire to take care of your fellow man. That being said, the solution to the problems in california are pretty simple. Start deporting illegal immigrants, and you will have the jobs open up. Granted, they may not be the cream of the crop jobs, but you will definitely see a large shift in unemployment. And I apologize about the other comment, I was being flip about the color of california's politics, not the tragedy that is occuring there. But it is directly from the illegals.

Check out the article from today entitled "Dallas police ticketed 39 drivers in 3 years for not speaking english". The officers were wrong for the ticketing, but of note is the chief of police's response to the issue saying immigration status is not his departments concern. That's a bit of a scary thought, that there is a huge law that they don't feel they should be enforcing. Again, they reap what they sew.

One messure that would help is for the States to drastically cut or eliminate residential property taxes,& go to a sales or " Fair Tax " system. That way people who are between jobs would be less likely to lose their homes.Those who pay off mortgages would actually own their homes & be safe.

Before it gets to the point where you cant even eat, make sure you become friends with farmers and I would bet my ass they would be happy to have you live nearby or on their land, work for them, and get food and stuff from them. At least you will eat.
I know a farmer in texas and this farmer said he had a guest building built, so when the shit collapses people could live there, work on the farm, and survive, and also provide for defense.

Only by getting and staying debt-free starting fifteen years ago am I surviving. I'm so frugal, and it's good. A carton of soup for one euro is my lunch for three days. Been homeless twice, went for five years not knowing where the next meal would come from. I laugh at ppl who criticize the extension of unemployment benefits. When it finally happens to you, you will think twice abt being critical. Unemployment was my lifeline up until this mth when I was hired for an excellent job. Try coming here to Ohio and experience the jobhunt here. It may take you over a year to find a livable waged job. Dont get comfy with unemployment benefits because the longer that you are out of work, the less likely you will find work. Its a dbl edged sword really.

My widowed mother there is essentially penniless, so I have pledged to help her. I will bring her here to France if need be -- she wouldn't like that, but hey. Money flow is cyclical. Monetarily, we ALL depend on one another. The collapse of U.S. financial system is due to a break in that cyclical flow. Monetary distribution has become both uneven and diluted. The evidence is the wider gap between the rich and the poor. The gov't leeches off of the citizens and the citizens leech off the gov't. I don't see ppl calling social security "welfare". Where does that money come from? It's right there on your pay stub.

@Rototill27, My view of collapse is coninciding with Peak Oil & Overpopulation. A US economy that became a service economy outsourcing even that. Financial types coming up with new products, MBS< CDS, CDO's these dervivative Ponzi Schemes blew up big time sending a US economy based on debt into the start of the Greatest Depression the world will ever see.
Unless somone comes up with a magic bullet fast-Replacement for Oil then we are total screwed.

I have been cognizant of Peak Oil for about a year or so, it kinda slipped in the recesses of my conciouness. Even wondering if the current gas prices are just the result of demand destruction, manipulation or is really Peak Oil and like a Tsunami the tide gets low before the big wave comes.

That's incredible. I would suggest getting out of that desert, where there is no water and food and move to the south or somewhere where you can get water out of a creek or something, you know. Basics for survival: water, food, shelter, fire, personal security, medicine. Move to fertile territory. Get out of the desert until it's over.

There are many unemployed people who cannot get a job. The UE benefits prevent eviction and starvation.
It appears that you have not been unemployed and do not understand how poor the job market is right now.
I have been unemployed since 4/09 and CANNOT find a job. If I wasn't able to get UE benefits, I would be living on the street.
I agree with you that lazy people who do not want to work should not be able to collect benefits.

Your wrong. States are BORROWING money big time now because they ran out of the money a long time ago. Guess who they are borrowing from the federal government. California has a huge blackhole now because they are borrowing billions for unemployment benefits which they have to pay off eventually. Someones got to foot the bill and right now its not the states.
