Hello there thank you so much for posting this song my mother was a backing singer for frankie laine and she did some backing on this song and it really brings back great times and wonderful memories and you really captured the essence of the original with a touch of the frankie laine version what a great job you did bravo it brought a tear to my eye she is no longer alive but you brought all of her back to life in the song thank you so much god bless you
I hear this song and I am back in Singapore in the early fities. One of the most exciting places in the world and all in this song. It is as powerful as 'As time goes by'. Thank you Yao Li, Frankie Laine and now Gordon Murray.
Hey Gordon, I am just online and going through your channel on YouTube following your hints of "meigui, meigui". Beautiful music, wonderful work! Look forward to more from you.
asian women are very beautiful, and this rendition , is a medium that acts as a musical kaleidoscope, of their beauty, and of one in particular for me.
Thanks again for sharing a truly romantic piece. Great to see this quality and delivery of a really lovely traditional composition.
You have made Rose delightful, bubbly & unpredictable in your performance!
In the English version "Rose, Rose, I Love You" , Rose was the "Flower of Malaya" whom the American GI 's could not bear to leave behind. She was the symbol of love, warmth & sweet memories during WW2 overseas.
Thank you for bringing Rose back alive!
Thank you for sharing your creativity! What inspired you to choose this unforgettable 1940's Chinese song?
It is so wonderful not just to hear you play, but to watch the way you play. You have such joy, it reminds me why I loved the piano in the first place. I hope t someday be half as decent as you are in your playing, but more importantly, I hope I can enjoy it as much as you clearly do. Thank you.
love this - brings back so many memories - have this on 78 by Miss Hue Lee. I'm a piano teacher & would love sheet music of your arrangement. Is it available at all ?
Thank you for posting this excellent piece of music. I've always liked this song and as a guitarist of many years who has moved over to keyboards it has given me much homework to try and emulate your very nice rendition.
Gordon, I hope this finds you well and that you will continue to post your beautiful musical arrangements. Always a pleasure to be on the receiving end of your amazing talent!
a white guy does anything chinese, language, music and all 20 billion asians jump up and cheers. most of them women foaming in the mouth. any asian however, can spent their entire life learning engish and all they get is laughs and redicules from whites as a whole
Oh dear! I have heard this when I was living in Asia as a child! it was used during those impromptu silly moments on TV! It must have been 10+ years since I have last heard this!
You are a great pianist, fine Sir! Asian music in my limited understand is based off of mainly 5 keys instead of European 7 (not comparing Indian music which is 12 or 13), and it is quite hard to adjust!
I remember the open words as "rose, rose, I love you". Wow! Where has the time gone?
what wonderful childhood memories! -- thanks to those "impromptu silly moments on TV".. hope you enjoyed hearing it again, after so long..
thank you, fine Sir, for your kind words! .. it's a complex subject, to be sure; but i think it's safe to say that European, East Asian (including China) & South Asian (including India) scales were traditionally quite different from one another..
as regards the opening English words, you're quite right....... tempus fugit :) .. all the best!!
Hello Loosewrists: I am working on a concert program (I am a Chinese - Western Opera Singer), and would love to put Rose Rose I Love You on my program in both Chinese and English...but I love the piano arrangement you posted here....do you know how i can get a copy of the sheet music? Thanks a bunch for sharing this! I love this song. My grandmother used to listen to it when i was very tiny!
Super version! I love the orient and you have captured the essence of this song. It was - after all - written about wartime asia. Nice story beautiful song.
thanks so much! .. well, while the original Chinese song (1940) has nothing to do with wartime Asia, the English version (1951) certainly has everything to do with the bittersweet experience of a sailor having to leave his "flower of Malaya" & her wonderfully exotic land. as you say, "nice story beautiful song".. all the best!!
thanks so much! i'm so glad you like it.. i'm sorry, i don't have a recording of my arr. to buy or download at this time. i should have one in the future. when i do, i'd be glad to inform you.
This is fantastic, especially for a foreigner playing Chinese pop songs. Although music has no international barrier, how on earth can you be so at home with such Chinese pieces?
There is heart and soul in the playing, congratulations!
thanks so much for your very kind & encouraging words! .. i can't answer your question. all i can say is, if i sound "so at home with such Chinese pieces", i'm very happy! .. all the best in your life & with your own music!!

Very well played. Perhaps try to get your expertise recorded by music companies and market this to a hugh Chinese market.

thank you, lol I dunno there is just something about your version that have lot and lots of energy, is like a revial of an old song! Do you know Chinese or something? lol cause you seem to be familair with lots of chinese classic
you're welcome! .. interesting thought! i suppose there could be some kind of revival or throwback flavour to my arr... interesting question! i began learning Chinese earlier this year, mainly out of my desire to understand the lyrics of Chinese classics.. thanks so much for a really interesting comment!!
Gordon, this is a lovely arrangement! It's always a pleasure for me to hear you play this song. My late mother, Rose, would have enjoyed this immensely! Thank you!
thanks so much for your kind words! i'm glad you like the song & arr.. it's nice to think your mother would have enjoyed it.. all the best to you & your family!!
As one who struggles to play even a simple tune on the piano, I think your interpretation of this haunting little melody is quite magnificent. Thank you for sharing it with us.
i hope it's at least a happy struggle!; hope it won't always be such a struggle! .. i'm glad you like my interpretation. thanks so much for your kind words! .. all the best!!
thank you for your kind & encouraging words! .. it exists only in my own chicken scratch handwriting(; i've been meaning to learn a music notation program). i'm just not ready to share my transcriptions / arr.s; but i'd be glad to let you (& anyone else) know when i am.. if you have a moment, please see, among the comments, my reply to Stan regarding making my transcriptions / arr.s available.. all the best!!
i don't know that piece; hope to hear it sometime..
i don't use gracenotes in my arr., but i can see how the high register 16th notes (before the climactic return of the main theme) might give that effect..
alternating octaves = :( lol ..
thanks so much for your thoughtful & encouraging comments! .. all the best!!

As one who struggles to play even a simple tune on the piano, I think your interpretation of this haunting little melody is quite magnificent. Thank you for sharing it with us.

thank you for your kind & encouraging words! .. it exists only in my own chicken scratch handwriting(; i've been meaning to learn a music notation program). i'm just not ready to share my transcriptions / arr.s; but i'd be glad to let you (& anyone else) know when i am.. if you have a moment, please see, among the comments, my reply to Stan regarding making my transcriptions / arr.s available.. all the best!!

on a second thought, it reminds me of S.Liadov's Musical SnuffBox
it might have been those little gracenotes
the ending alt.octs are pretty awesome too
jefftam1234 3 years ago
i don't know that piece; hope to hear it sometime..
i don't use gracenotes in my arr., but i can see how the high register 16th notes (before the climactic return of the main theme) might give that effect..
alternating octaves = :( lol ..
thanks so much for your thoughtful & encouraging comments! .. all the best!!
