On this take Alex didn't do his solo with his pedals but rather did it clean. It sounded different this way, and odd if not off at places, esp. 4:12. The pinch harmonics weren't coming thru either. I prefer the album version. Flows better. Still awesome here, tho.
Now, I might be a bit crazy, but I definitely prefer GL’s current voice as compared to the one he had back in the seventies-eighties. Sounds fuller, warmer.
Amazing song, though this is the first time I've seen Peart miss a bit (in the middle of the song). Seems like a bit of fatigue perhaps. Hey, for a man that plays such fast paced music, and his style of playing everything with so much power, you can't knock the guy especially for being almost 60 years old.
I've been watching Rush videos all day, there's always that one dislike on every one of them, I guess the Big Brother doesn't like Rush, and he alone!! fuck them, Rush forever with a mission and closer to the heart!!
It's easy to miss how great the bass playing was on some of the the eighties albums because of the production style but it really shines through here.
@gextvedde Yeah, hearing Tim Commerford on the Rush documentary talk about losing interest in Rush in the 80s because he wanted to see Geddy play bass instead of keyboards is mind boggling to me. It's fine if he just doesn't like those songs for other reasons but the bass playing on the 80s albums is light years beyond the 70s stuff. Marathon to me is their most majestic, inspiring song and I'm so glad they brought it back. I get chills listening to it.
Rush will never dissapoint me.. Such an emotional song with a great, great foundation and super fucking lift and rise to the song! The Chemistry is beyond excellent. I better hear like 10 more albums out of you Rush. Youll always be my band.
This is more than a simple song with a beautiful melody. To me, it's an emotional experience every time I hear those lyrics. The structure of Marathon is simply perfect in every way.
Great song. I have to say this....with pain great pain I might add. I saw Rush two summers ago at Red Rocks. Alex was terrible....again, it causes my pain to say that but maybe somethings wrong with him.
This tour was so good I saw it TWICE. One in Chicago, and once in New York. They were playing my favorite song off my favorite album! How can I not go again?
@DeftCrowMk3 Watch bootlegs from the times they played this song last year at Madison Square Garden and in Hershey, PA...even faster than this rendition.
I love how Ged's voice has mellowed, yet he can still sing a fantastic soprano as always. People who have been dogging him for this tour need to realize that during the second leg of this tour he was coming down from a pretty bad cold.
@ShowgunSam i love rush heavily, always love geddys unbelieveable voice (live too)...but its just misfortune that he was so "low" on this tour...some songs and passages werent good from him or good for his healing process. but still a great live performance as always.
@Tetragrammaton8TV What's more of a misfortune was the fact that his vocals were heavily pitch corrected for the dvd/cd. You can certainly tell on Spirit Of Radio.
@ShowgunSam I've looked into that, just to see if there was any truth to those claims, but everything I've read, including excerpts from interviews done by some of the people associated with the DVD, say pitch correcting wasn't done. I don't know if it's true, but I can't see Geddy wanting something like that done.
@rshcry24 I can promise you, it was done to an extent. Check out a quality bootleg of Spirit Of Radio and compare it to the vocals for the DVD version. You'll especially notice a difference in the "oh yeah!" that he does for the chorus.
@ShowgunSam Totally agree! I much prefer his voice now than ever. He can still shreik when he has to, but he seems to have found a great spot for his voice, and I quite like it!
Geddy has an awesome voice, there are so many artists around now who can't sing, no not Bieber but people like Bono and Chris martin can't really "sing" and it isn't noticed because the music they produce is so darn soft that literally anyone could do it. Geddy is ridiculous, i never notice any drop in vocal quality when he is playing the really hard bass lines compared to the comparatively simple ones, he is a great musician!
One of the first "complex" bass lines I learned on bass years ago. Absolutely love this one. I even rearranged the keys parts on bass I love it so much.
I absolutely love this song! I totally passed on 80's Rush until recently when I bought "A Show of Hands" for a good live version of "Force Ten". I have to say, though I really like the Time Machine DVD, the Show of Hands version of this tune is better because Alex didn't really deliver on the solo on this take. Everything else sounds better though especially the guitar and bass tones.
even though geddy may not be able to hit the extremely high notes he used too he can still sound good with the voice he has now. Their musical abilties have if anything increased from previous years, they nail every fucking note flawless. I cant think of three other people on the planet who can play a song like this and nail every note, exspecially neil.
"Marathon" and the "Power Windows" album are exactly my age; 26! I was born 10 days before that album was released in October or '85. I wish I could've seen Rush on this tour. Oh well. Maybe next tour.
Definitely, one of the best songs of the tour.
