it been funnier, if you computerized it to make it longer board, and make it they had to go through little obstacles and made them had their own mini struggle, with horse racing music in the background, than the video would realy of owned.

What I used was...

A Canon Ixus digital camera.

The head from a tripod mounted on a small plank of wood.

2 screws in the wood to allow me to slide along the edge of the desk.

A ruler stuck to the desk to guide me how far to move it.

A cheap chess set.

Lots of time and patience.

For each frame I slid the camera on it's plank of wood 2mm along the desk and moved the knights a little. I tried to keep the knights roughly in front of the camera to keep their speed fairly even.

As for where you can get it, I just looked around the house.

i know what you mean about the patience bit... i make stop motion videos as well, check some of them out when you get the chance.

Below each chess elemnts there would be ferrus(iron) and there would be a controller magnet under the board. Although I came to know that actual procedure followed is something different but this is definitely an option.
