I actually spent 4 years there. Two deployments with the Marines, and then 2 years as an engineer. I used to fly or drive base to base all of the time, and I always did enjoy those flights. What I hated was waiting at the PAX terminals for hours and hours on end. Oh yeah, and the flights were very serene, up until the point when the pilots began performing combat maneuvers.
There's a certain amount of poetry in there. It's pretty amazing how serene and peaceful flight can be, right up until the door gun is put back in place.
Wow, Iraq's pretty flat (at least in that area). I guess there actually is some green there and not all dirt. Good to see some aerial views of Iraq. I hope that place gets it together someday and becomes a stable member of the global community.
Iraq is largely flat and desert except in the northern area where it becomes mountainous, and is relatively green around the rivers (the Tigris and the Euphrates). They use a lot of canals for irrigation purposes.
In my experience in dealing with Iraqis, as with many other cultures, for the most part they are a moderate sort of people (moderate Islamic, that is.. much like most Americans are moderate Christians). It's the select fanatic few who always ruin it for everyone else. :)
Do plenty of research before hand... and keep in mind most Army pilots who actually do the flying are warrant officers. In order to become a warrant officer in the Army, you have to do some time as enlisted... which, from my own experience, is probably the best way to know how the Army really works, lol.
Indeed... they are special in that they seemingly defy gravity, haha. j/k.. I've actually been doing a lot of studying about the principles of helicopter flight.. I want to fly one someday.
Haha, no fast roping... especially not with full body armor on. :P Yeah, those pilots are really good... and a little crazy at times. One of the flights we had, the pilot kept doing quick banking maneuvers. It's a good thing I love rollercoasters, lol.
gladly im 110% a bike addict, tho ive never ridden in a blackhawk so this addiction passed on me (for now). and bikes are a bit cheaper to get and maintaine too :p

Nice footage. You cut out the fast roping? I've seen those Blackhawk pilots do some unbelievable flying. Seeing one always makes me stop and stare.

Helicopters are pretty impressive to watch... and even more so to ride in. :) I thought I had the bug for bikes... helicopters have taken the cake.

Very awesome stuff, thanks for sharing that! (:

Indeed, Iraq/Mesopotamia falls within the Fertile Crescent.
Not too far from here is the Ziggurat of Ur. I can see it from just about any place on post. :)
