  • Teases with Recently I believe. Maybe the reason he teases songs, is because he really wants to hear a riff or a song so he plays it for a little bit, or deciding if he wants to or not. Maybe he just does it. Just a theory.

  • Thank you for this Video I used it for my Music project about Dave Matthews!!!

  • god i wish i went to this show, you're a lucky guy/girl

  • I think this is about serious abuse. The differences between a father's twisted point of view and its effects on the son's point of view which is the holding up of the gun pointed straight at his old man. Even at this point of confrontation the old man still doesnt get it.

  • @arielskies12 It's about a lot of things... The main point he's trying to get across though is that the world is only being held by us for out children to have later... Depending on how we raise them they're going to decide the fate of the world... Preconception does play a big part though

  • @arielskies12 I agree. Sadly. Beautiful song though.

  • I miss you mom an dad

  • Man, I have been listening to this solo show for years and never knew there were videos. Awesome.

  • hes fucking amaazingg!!!

  • @doctorpapaya on busted stuff it got lyrics..pretty much euqal to those used here..

  • masterpiece...

  • I got the word here daddy, between my fingers and my thumb.

  • great stuff

  • there's somethin gorgeous about dave alone with a guitar...

love this song with the full band too

  • god his scats are awesome

  • great play

  • I never thought about what it really means, man this guy is a poet. "Even if you're sure, you never know it all. The ground beneath is nothing more than your point of view." FUCKIN BEAUTIFUL!

  • I've had that thought numerous times in the past 6 years or so. His lyrics are always so poetic. This man sweats poetry.

  • @Somuchtoplay I had the same realization at one point - his poetry is huge and lush. A born musician in the same vein as Mozart. The poetry is just so good in his whole catalogue.

  • @Somuchtoplay I had the same realization at one point - his poetry is huge and lush. A born musician in the same vein as Mozart. The poetry is just so good in his whole catalogue. It's really intelligent and full of love. "What you got in your head? Your secret's safe with me. I got the truth, friend, should I whisper in your ear? Take good care of it, please; it's the only one there is. Can I twist it please, can I give it just a little twist?" The story in this song is really interesting

  • @Somuchtoplay

When they first starting playing full versions of Raven in 2000 the lyrics changed almost nightly and there was some really poetic stuff. You can check 'em out at dmbstream . com

  • i was 16, i missed so much good dave

  • So good

  • Yes.

  • its about rust

"all that shines turns to rust"

and hope - The humans attempt to overcome entropy

any religious aspect will remain in the eye of the beholder

but only Dave really knows know doesn't he?

  • no....not at all. about the earth falling apart due to the older generation..leaving the worlds troubles to the younger generation

  • i think its about the deteriorating world environment due to global warming and pollution. i believe dave is trying to say that the world might not be around forever and we have to take care of it, regardless of what other generations did.

"I got the whole world here Daddy between my fingers and my thumb - well you take care of it please its the only one"

"itd take ten lifetimes boy to undo what Ive done" ect.

  • I agree "it'd take me a life time to remedy what you did"

  • Well said and I concur.

  • i agree with that..i really listened to it for the first time yesterday and tru

  • Does he actually now how awesome he is? I mean does he really realize how he is a musical genius? You see him on tv and in interviews and he is so unassuming, so down to earth.

  • so true he never looks for any gradtitude from his music never looks for appreciation he just loves to make people happy and get his message across. I wish more musicians and actors could be like him

  • that right hand every two beats pulls this tune together.. so simple, yet so badass

  • he just played it at MSG :)

  • what do you think this song is about?

  • This is not what I think, but some think its about this??

Father equals God. Son equals mankind. The theme is how mankind takes God (more specifically, organized religion), and uses it for his own empowerment. The Man is twisting, because mankind has twisted the message of God.

Originally, the song ranged from a take on Religion, children, lost souls, and trapped environments. Early versions, interestingly, borrowed from The Beatles Glass Onionin referencing back to other DMB songs.

  • nice interpretation.. that shit is deep and poetic

  • I like that. It makes sense. But Iv also heard this one from other places.

Some people think the son is holding a gun at his father. When the father says "it would take a lifetime to undo what youve done". Both of those sound like good interpretations of it though.

  • tonight mother fuckers!

  • Raven made it's comeback tonight at the first show of the 2009 tour in NYC.

  • yeah i know, i was at the concert, good looks though. they did a different intro with just dave starting off the song, it was real cool.

  • Very underrated song.

  • maaaaaaaaaaaan, this concert is amazing, i just cant get enough of dave. he's simply a genious, like most people have atleast one or two songs if not more that i dont like, but dave, i can't even find ONE i don't like. he continues to blow me away with his talent. i will someday marry a man like dave haha.

    simply amazing

  • I so agree. if he was a women, it be all over.

  • Hey Jbombs do you have this concert on CD? And if so could you burn it and send to me? I will pay for it!! Cheers, let me know

  • you can download it on dmblive(dot)com for like 12 bucks. totally worth it

  • Drunk, High, Sober, Dead.

    Fucking guitar god.

  • dead?

  • You are soooo right!

  • he is a music legend! i totally agree! he is up there with the top song writers of all time... im just lucky enough to have been a part of it all

  • FRIKIN AMAZING!! His talent is mind blowing. He is truely underappericate. He is music legend.

  • Much Much agreed

  • @computercanada yea no-one realizes Dave Matthews is a direct descendant musically of BertJansch CatStevens and NielYoung. The torch was passed to Dave I mean in the late 90`s for acoustic rock/pop iconship.Dave looks 'hey-guyed an`flandered' but still able to pull it off on this night, with few cock-ups.Yea like you said hes a legend.

  • he's so down to earth its hard to find artist's so good and so famous thats why hes my favorite artist not to mention hes got amazing talent

  • he is funny

  • man I love how he's not that confident...At the end you can tell he's like.."Shit was that good or not?" and then the crowd cheers and then he knows it was okay. He isn't like cocky about his playing...hard to explain

  • I agree I guess its because the music means alot to him when he writes and performs and he is truelly humble about how people take it..because once its out there its not really his any more and only a true artist knows what that means...if any of that makes sense

  • so happy they released this show on DMBlive... specifically to get this song!

  • it kinda reminds me like when you open up a can of soda and it goes "shhhh" .. you know what i mean? it sounds refreshing

i love that raw, real sound

  • Can someone hook me up with the tabs for this version?

  • the mutes he does with his palm in this song is what makes dave the shit at guitar. He's the man no doubt

  • hahaha I love the random noises he makes into music

  • Did anyone else feel like he was about to play #40 at the very beginning? Great song none the less.

  • lol, no because the title says Raven...

  • it did sound like #40, I wonder dave even knew that, or if he meant to tease it.

  • That guitar is ridiculous

  • yes it is.. Taylor right?

  • yup thats his uber sexy Taylor my favorite guitar that dave has

  • I'm gonna be in Seattle next month for thanksgiving to visit my family =)

This version is FUCKING INCREDIBLE. GOosebumps

  • ...and for all the times that were just fuckin' incredible....

  • If I could get this version on audio somehow I will die a happy man. I can't stop watching this.

  • there's a way to get any audio you want..just buy a mic for like 20 bucks for your pc..then record this with the mic, there should be a program on your computer, that you can record with, it should be called "sound recorder" just go to Start/programs/accessories/entertainment, and you'll see it...just put the mic right up to the speakers and hit record, you can save it to file and play it later and burn it to cd

  • dude........lol verrrrryyy niccccceeee

  • this is amazing..

  • release and expand the flow that runs through your soul and don't ubstruct it with thought.

  • I can't find tabs for this, but Ide really like to learn how to play it.

  • Is anyone else saturated with excitement over DMB summer tour 08' (specifically Camden both nights)

  • I almost can't take it -- I'm so excited!!!!!

  • It's my reason for living actually. However, I had a strange dream, or nightmare last night that the tour sucked... I woke up in a cold sweat shaking

  • i dont think he can go wrong with anything he does. he seems to be the only artist that sounds good on a record and live. we love you, dave!

  • Anyone that can help with and EXACT tab for THIS PARTICULAR version, hook it up.

  • Det er sååå smukt...hvis der er nogen fra Danmark der vil tage med mig til USA og høre ham live...så skriv...;) kys

  • If you cant see the beauty that Dave is bringing us then maybe you shouldn't be here. David you are messing with my head.

  • it sounds so effortless... nobody strikes a chord like he does

  • wow probably one of the best acoustic solo songs ive ever seen him play...watching him play his songs solo lets you realize how awesome his riffs really are

  • so true, don't get me wrong the band is amazing and each is a supreme musician. It's even different with Timmy, but watching JUST dave... you get a different appreciation for him and what he can do with just him and his guitar.

He is amazing at using his guitar playing to establish a "beat" so to speak. Its actually a rhythm style. God Dave is amazing. Or is he God...!

  • the album version was good too...anyone have a live full band of it?

  • best muter ive ever seen

  • Amen.

  • anyone have any idea what guitar hes playing?

im thinking its a taylor 714 but i want to make sure

  • LTD 914ce fishman pickups

  • i agree with greg down there. amazing. different than the lillywhite sessions, but twice as good man

  • That was amazing, i couldn't even have imagined what this song would have sounded like outstide of the studio. Kudos

  • this is the best version of this song ive heard

  • this one is pretty hard to make sound good solo.

  • yay

  • this song song sounds amazing solo!!

  • Lillywhite Sesh had completely different lyrics. Both versions are amazing.

  • he uses a pick thats how his nails dont crack

  • as far as i know, he doesnt use a pick, so i wonder how his nails dont just crack when he strums like that

  • He does use a pick, some songs he doenst, some versions of Everyday, Sister and some others. but he uses a pick cause he strums hard sometimes.

  • I dont use a pick lol. If you angle your hand right then it just thins your nails instead of cracking them.

  • great...one of my favorite :D !!

  • Raven? I never heard this song before that I can recall..this was pretty memorable though....

  • It came out with the lillywhite sessions. It wasn't realesed on cd until busted stuff though.

  • lmao ! funny at the end
